If we're looking for a PG, I hope the staff at least takes a look at Deng Dut from College of Southern Idaho who just decommitted from the University of Portland of the WCC. He's from Australia. He was Region 18 POY, 14.7 ppg, 49% from 3, 51% overall fg, 85% ft, 5.1 apg, 5.4 rbg. His highlight video is worth watching. He's got all around skills, 6'4".

What does our resident csi expert think of this? @hipsterd00fus21

We are great at scouting the stat line. He may be great.

I trust that our coaching staff is able to look behind the stat line and see things we may not.

I agree. We don’t know what kind of kid he is. But if he’s a good kid, he fits our needs, fits with our international theme, is already used to living in the area, and will have a fellow Aussie on the team.

I also like that he’s a JC guy with two more years to play. He may be looking to go higher than USU.

I think having an Aussie on the team could be a big help. Countrymen tend to be on teams together. Is Bairstow a likable guy that could become his mate and convince him to play at usu?

I looked around some. Dut was probably recruited to Portland by Ben Johnson, an assistant at Portland who has a history of coaching basketball in Australia and was part of the staff at Portland that was let go this spring when Shantay Legans was named the new head coach. Yesterday Johnson was named as an assistant at San Jose State. Today Dut decommitted from Portland. Maybe SJSU then.

So what you are saying is that Dut would likely be coming to USU if we had hired Tim Miles. That's ok, I think we picked the right coach but I also think you are onto something. Likely going to SJSU. Good work Sherlock!

Nice find. Although as a side note we should never lose to sjsu in a basketball recruiting battle. I hope the staff at least reaches out.

In response to Roy. He signed last fall. So based on the prior year results which he only started 2 games.

This may end up being a talent upgrade for UNM, but when he transferred, the refrain from KU fans was “who?” and an occasional “I didn’t realize he had joined the team yet.”

KU’s recruiting has really suffered by KU standards with the specter of NCAA sanctions on the horizon.

I think it’s obvious Odom thinks he can and wants to build a program with high school kids. Anywhere usu’s name surfaces is with high school kids and we aren’t really tied to any transfers.

I’ve said this before but I think the staff is going to be surprised at the talent level in the MWC and realize they need to up their game on the talent side & start recruiting more transfers in the future.

It sure seems more like we aren’t trying to land guys in the portal, or are just being super selective about who we contact.

I do think it’s a mistake in the current landscape at a school like USU not to use the portal and JCs more than we have. Aside from Utah/LDS kids, it’s gonna be tough to hold onto good players for 4 years.

Using a scholarship on someone like Zee is a big risk. If he doesn’t pan out, it’s a wasted scholarship. If he does, does anyone think he stays at USU for 4 years? This isn’t a knock on Zee or his abilities, I just don’t think it makes much sense for a school like USU to take a flyer on guys like him in the transfer portal economy. Let the Hamptons and Radfords of the world take the risk and scoop him up in the portal if he hits.

Maybe he’s less likely to transfer if he’s a “hit” because he’s an international player? I dunno.

Nate Dixon’s comment in the recent interview was that Zee will be good down the road or something like that. I worry about that. In the new transfer economy, every scholarship should be used on someone you realistically believe can help you the next season (whether as a starter or bench player). That person can be a high school player, JC guy, or transfer, but should be able to help immediately.

Why? Because all any school is guaranteed is one year. Let the JCs and lower tier D1 schools be the development factories.

It is the new reality of college basketball and means being a great recruiter isn't just who gets great high school talent, but who can master the portal and convince great already established players to transfer to your school. In the long thread about the new transfer rule most people seemed fine with the rule change. It is what it is and we will just have to deal with it, but I imagine many Aggie fans won't be happy about it when losing good starters becomes a regular event.

Nate Dixon was at Wyoming for a year. Over the past few seasons UMBC played Georgetown twice, LSU, Marquette, Penn State, Air Force, SMU, Arizona, Virginia, and Kansas State. These coaches have been around for awhile and have seen great athletes. Odom was at Virginia Tech for 7 years, Dixon was at Florida for 3 years, Henry was at Georgetown for 6 years, Crawford was at Ohio State and Texas for a combined 6 years. They have lots of cumulative experience with leagues rated higher and lower than the MW. Will they be surprised at the talent level in the MW... maybe, but I think they have enough experience, are watching enough film, and working to get the best athletes they can anyway. Odom talked about becoming a consistent top 25 program and my guess is that he has a good idea of the kind of athletes he will need to reach that level. I don’t think they will settle for lesser recruits because they are underestimating the talent in the MW.

I think it will be a combination of both high school, LDS recruits as well as a few transfers each year. Not sure how it will play out. I sure hope we can land some younger guys and have them be around for 2-3 years. It makes it a lot for fun to follow/enjoy a team when they have players that stay for more than 1 year and you grow to love them as well as them having pride in the program. Guys like Merrill, Queta, Bean etc are a lot funner to to cheer for and than Anthony or Worster who leave after a year. Guys will also have to choose to use their transfer wisely as they can only use it once without having to sit out a year unless they have already graduated.

Lobos seem to be tearing it up! Coaches securing commits on a Sunday! This guy will be a good player for them in the MW.

Wish there were news about our recruiting.

Coach Dixon indicated on his recent interview that we are still trying to fill that one final spot and even said we are recruiting “a couple guys.” I have to believe we are recruiting somebody even if we aren’t hearing about it...

Lobos seem to be tearing it up! Coaches securing commits on a Sunday! This guy will be a good player for them in the MW.

Wish there were news about our recruiting.
Are we recruiting?
Well New Mexico had A LOT of players who needed replacing. They were very bad last year. We should not be recruiting like them. We just have a few holes to fill. I like where we’re at right now.

For sure the coaches are recruiting. We currently only have scholarship to give for this coming season unless other players leave. I am guessing the coaching staff is being selective and wanting to make sure they get the person that will be the best fit for the team.

A sad fact about the portal is that the higher profile teams get first dibs and then the Utah States of the college basketball world fight over the left overs. It is not surprising that we have only heard {crickets} re: committments as it is not yet our turn at the front of the food line.

We are not uniquely positioned for success in the portal.

Teams much lower down the totem pole are getting commits from the portal on a daily basis, so I don’t buy this at all.

We are either not recruiting the portal or are being super selective and/or patient. Which is fine.

Probably the latter. If Miller doesn't leave then we only have one scholly left. USE IT WISELY!

Nevada got Sherfield in September. Patterson and Baker came late in the process..No need to rush. You have already nabbed two starters out of the transfer market..That is a great start..No need to go to the dark side just yet..

I think we are all in panic mode right now. I always felt like this year was going to be a a bit of a downer. We were losing Queta which had a significant impact on our team. Losing Worster and Anthony was rough, but they aren't irreplaceable. I think we are going to find out what we have in all of these guys like Zapala, McChesney, Bairstow, etc. I am bearish on what they are going to become, but a lot of smart people on this board feel good about them. I hope I am wrong. I'm willing to let the new staff put their team together and get out on the court. My expectations aren't super high, but I expect us to win.

Players have particular interests that go beyond playing for the best available team, e.g., the prospect of more playing time, playing close to home, playing for a former coach, familial ties to a school, etc. But I believe, all things being equal, the better players will choose to play for the higher profile teams. Neither from the portal nor from the HS, prep school, JC or international ranks are the 5-star recruits falling over themselves to play at Maryland Eastshore than for likes of Duke, Michigan St., Kentucky or North Carolina. While there are exceptions water will seek its own level.

We have seen on this thread a number of players we have purportedly offered but who have not yet accepted our offer. And why is that? Because they are waiting to see if the get a “better” offer. So why do players accept an offer earlier to go to “lesser” schools? Because they are unwilling to risk the smaller bird in the hand to take a chance on the bigger one in the bush.

Recruiting is a curious mating dance.
