A confession
This is not intended be a “crap on Coach Smith” thread. I think he’s a great coach that will do well at Utah. But I have to come clean about something.
I absolutely hated listening to interviews with Coach Smith. His voice, his inability to stay on topic, and the lack of any real depth to anything.
I just want to know one thing — am I alone in this?
If I am, that’s totally ok.

For me I enjoyed his interviews because in between all the catch phrases and repeated stories I would get actual insight compared to interviews full of only coach speak.

Re: A confession
Interesting you say that. I kept quiet because everyone raved about his enthusiasm, but I also thought he had a hard time staying on topic and tried too hard to say something funny. I wished he would just answer the question.

Re: A confession
I loved listening to Smith after the games. He usually got a little more ADHD on the coaches shows though and sometimes got redundant. Overall, a joy to listen to and a huge breath of fresh air that was much needed.

Is it like the Kennedy-Nixon debates? You watch him on tv being interviewed, usually after a win, and he was excited- we were all excited.... but in terms of substance maybe if you were listening there wasn't much to it?

I feel this is incredibly nit picky to complain about that. We’ll find fault with anything. Which I get, we all have things that drive us nuts.

I enjoyed his post game interviews but I never really listened to his radio interviews or any of the coach’s shows. I could see his style not working for everyone in that setting.

Re: A confession
I loved listening to Craig Smith when he coached USU. His enthusiasm was a nice explanation point after all the wins we had. It probably will come across as pretty annoying with him coaching a rival team. It will also be interesting to see how he handles coaching a bad team which he probably will next year. Things are about to get much more challenging for him. Will he still be this enthusiastic cheerleader or will he resort acting like a normal coach as the losses pile up?

I loved listening to him. I was always impressed by his memory. Although I think he sometimes used stats as a filler. I called in the number dump. Almost every interview he had at least one number dump. The dude has a good memory.

It is very nitpicky, which is why I never brought it up while he was here and only bring it up now as a sort of sanity check. It 100% doesn’t matter, was just curious if I was alone. Sounds like I am mostly alone, which is fine and what I suspected.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 6th, 2021, 9:58 pmI feel this is incredibly nit picky to complain about that. Again, I like Smith and appreciate what he did here. But here’s to Ryan Odom having a buttery smooth listenable voice!

Re: A confession
I loved his interviews. The energy and candor was great... I don't like the typical coachspeak we normally see where all they say is "gotta play well, execute, blah blah". He was a bit of an oversharer, even outside of games, which I enjoyed because it gave more insight into things.

Yeah, he is going to be the next Vitale. I get the whole Dick Vitale thing too. He is a positive guy that loves the game, but I don’t enjoy listening to him for very long. It gets old having someone yelling the whole time. It’s like listening to a whole beastie boys album. I will miss Craig because of his enthusiasm, but I have a feeling that Odom may be able to get more out of his team. It’s kind of a tweedle Dee tweedle dum thing, because as long as they’re winning I don’t care what they say that much.
