The family connection to Quinn Snyder and Dennis Lindsey notwithstanding, how did this pairing of Odom and USU go down? Did USU recruit Odom? Or did Odom recruit USU? It seems like a longshot for an East Coast guy to be looking for a job in the western states. I'm curious as to which party reached out to the other.
Didn't we use a search firm to see which coaches were interested? Odom having a brother here opens up the connection angle. He was obviously very familiar with the state and knowing his family, very familiar with the basketball in the state. It isn't as surprising after learning that information.

Ryan Odom's dad runs a search firm. I'm sure he knows JH really well.

I have to imagine Odom's brother spoke highly of Utah and that had an effect on Ryan deciding to move across the country.

Didn’t Blake Anderson say in his get to know video that his spirit animal is a “retriever”... he knew all along who the new coach was going to be. Our FB coach is a prophet.

Vermont Catamounts radio guy says Odom could have done better, and gets taken to task by UMBC fans about how good a job USU is. Pretty funny. I like these UMBC people!

I actually don't mind his opinion although I disagree with it. It is actually pretty cool to have a coach that turned down Va Tech and that many in the media thinks should be a P5 coach come across the country and be our coach. Some guys get offended when they are dating an attractive woman and people say stuff like, "why is she with you," but honestly that is how you should want it. Hartwell hit another home run.

I disagree that getting rid of a really good coach in the league is good for anyone. He’s just some homer fan boy.

I get this all the time. The very fetching Mrs. LKGates is way out of my league. On the plus side, people just figure I have lots of money. What they don't understand is it was my sparkling, charismatic personality...

Agreed 100%. I don't want USU to win the MWC because the conference is getting worse, I want USU to win because they've gotten better. We need teams like UNM and UNLV to get back to where we know they can be. It doesn't hurt to lose a few games in conference play when you are losing to good teams and in the end it helps get you ready for the postseason. I can't imaging wanting the rest of the conference to start losing good coaches to make things easier for us.

@brownjeans is this more the winning you were looking for?

And take into account @SLB post one above mine.
Honestly, I can't say I'm excited. Not totally down on the hire, but not excited either. He's around .600 for his career. Had one miracle season but when measured against his total body of work seems like an outlier.
I wasn't really excited about Smith either and that worked out. Hartwell seems to be drawn to young coaches who may be able to harness USU and Spectrum to blow up. Maybe it satisfies Hartwell's ego or something. It's great so long as he keeps being right, but I think USU has enough going for it that we could find coaches who have accomplished more.

Odom could turn out to be great. I'll be rooting for him to have success at USU beyond his wildest dreams.
Are we sure we will be allowed to have full crowds in the Spectrum any time soon? And if they are allowed, will people come back? Or are large gatherings not going to be so large any more for a generation?
Seriously, why is everything you say so depressing?
I just read the papers. I'm not making the news or decisions, I'm just reading and listening to what the experts say. There is a possibility that things won't be "normal" in the way we knew them for a long time.

That article is from June 2020.

There have been three effective vaccines introduced since then (and the article itself states that social distancing ends once vaccines are widespread). The state of Utah has passed a Bill that will remove restrictions in May in all likelihood. The school has already told students to anticipate a normal fall 2021.

If the price and demand for limited Jazz tickets is any indication, then there will be people eager to get back to a packed spectrum.

That offense is all about beating your man off the dribble then passing. We don’t have many guys that can beat their man off the dribble. If you can make it so the defense is always playing catch up to the ball you get open looks but you typically need to have someone with an explosive first step.

The new hire at UMBC has not been well-received by its fans thus far, to say the least...I'll be interested to hear from our AD and Ferry on Wednesday.

Man, I'll say. When I saw that hiring I immediately thought felt for the fans. Maybe it'll pan out but on paper that's a pretty underwhelming hire. I can't believe one of the assistants wouldn't have been hired over him. I mean, he was fired from Duquesne just a few seasons ago.

It will be interesting to see if that sort of "offense" can work in the MWC. Teams are far faster at rotating and shutting down dribble drives 1v1 than what I see on that tape. It seems like an almost BYU-esque style with the "live by the 3 - die by the 3" mentality.

As we saw in the tourney (and several other games this past season) our roster is not set up to live by the 3.
