Re: Just here for the meltdown
I agree Smith needs to leave while he can I’d he wants big money. Next year the cupboard will be bare so if he doesn’t leave now he may not get a chance but Oklahoma and Texas are open so Utah?

If this is the real Tim Lacomb account that’s a very reliable source.
Sad day.
Re: Just here for the meltdown
For several reasons I have lost respect for him. I will be rooting against him.

Re: Just here for the meltdown
I'm not mad he's leaving. I'm very disappointed it's Utah. It's pretty much the one place he could go where I would root for his failure. I hope he gets his 12-15 million and then does so poorly he's out of the profession.

I've been working on this for an hour. No one from Utah State seems to know anything.

Re: Just here for the meltdown
Well, that sucks.
I’d be okay with Tim Miles, but I do wonder whether the ugliness that will be Smith’s departure to Utah affects the appetite to hire someone from the Miles/Medved/Smith coaching tree.

Re: Just here for the meltdown
This seems quite unlike Smith. When he took the job at USU, he didn't just jump in and sign a contract in the middle of the night... Sounds like it's more and more likely, but man, what a weird turn of events.
That being said, I hope the U continues to eat crap forever.

I remember Smith’s departure from USD being a bit “thief in the nightish” as well.flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 7:42 amThis seems quite unlike Smith. Get ready for the transfer portal to hit us hard. We better act fast to find a new coach.

They always are right? Coaches are mercenaries. I don’t fault Smith for cashing in on his hard work, and he knows it benefits his staff too, but I do fault him for reassuring his players he was staying just 5 days ago.USUstudent13 wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 7:44 amI feel bad for the players most of all. I wonder what changed to get Smith from telling his players he was staying to taking the job. Higher pay for him? Higher pay for assistants? Higher pay for players?

I wouldn't have faulted the guy for leaving for an actual high profile job. But utah?? This makes all the "Go Aggies" a sham.

They must not care much about hair, effective timeout usage, beating BYU, having a diverse roster/staff, or winning NCAA tourney games at the U.

Re: Just here for the meltdown
We should learn by now, anytime a coach doubles down that he's staying, it usually means he's currently negotiating his next contract.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 7:50 amThey always are right? Next man up. Let's find our new coach and keep it going.
I also don't fault Smith for seeing next year without Queta and thinking it's now or a few years from now for his payday. Queta was a beast for us that made anyone look good.

Re: Just here for the meltdown
I never had the assumption that coach Smith was going to be a long-term guy here. But to not interview and take the Minnesota job and then contact his players and reassure him that he was staying but then to only up and leave and go to a hated rival. I have lost a lot of respect for him. I certainly am thankful for everything that he has done over the last three years he has been wonderful here. But then to up and leave and go to Utah a program that won't even schedule US in basketball and that was hard on Smith and he hated that fact but then to actually do their makes it even more sour.

I feel this way also. I would have cheered for his success anywhere else. Now I have to hope he pulled a Matt Wells and will be mired in mediocrity, albeit way richer.

I don't think Smith ever had a real shot at Minnesota. He turned down the interview because he knew it was just a formality.

I’m sure it was the exact opposite. He won’t want to show his face around here, all the more reason to be scratching your head right now.
