I vote for this being reality. At least I hope. And please, anywhere but Utah if and when he decides it's time to move on. OK, anywhere but in state.OGaggie23 wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 12:33 amTalked to players a couple minutes ago and they have told me that he is staying in logan. Not gonna believe it until a much better source confirms it but I will be disappointed if he told his players specifically that he wasn’t going to Utah and then 5 days later takes the job.

It’s too bad the players had to find out via message board like this. Poor form on Smith’s part. I just got confirmation it’s happening.stwinward wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 12:36 amI vote for this being reality. At least I hope. Re: Just here for the meltdown
To tell his players that and turn around and do a contract right after would be pretty low on his part. If true my respect will have lowered for him.OGaggie23 wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 12:33 amTalked to players a couple minutes ago and they have told me that he is staying in logan. Re: Just here for the meltdown
Utah could have put the full court press on. I can’t imagine them having it leaked a USU coach was their target and he turned them down they are to proud with deep pockets. If he is gone he probably landed a massive contract and if that’s the case I can’t blame him. As much as it would hurt but if it’s 4 million plus a year you’d be crazy to turn it downOGaggie23 wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 12:33 amTalked to players a couple minutes ago and they have told me that he is staying in logan. Sucks to hear, but after hearing reports he was going to stay after not interviewing at Minnesota and then leave to a hated rival is douchey in my opinion.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 12:37 amIt’s too bad the players had to find out via message board like this. It’s legit. I had heard this would happen if Jensen turned down the job over a week ago. My posting history verifies this. I got hopeful when I saw all the hubbub on here that he wouldn’t take it. But I guess my Utah source was right after all.bluegrouse wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 12:36 amNot gonna believe it until a much better source confirms it but I will be disappointed if he told his players specifically that he wasn’t going to Utah and then 5 days later takes the job.

Re: Just here for the meltdown
It is big money, but at the same time its not like he was in line at the cache valley food pantry or relying on the great value brand to get by. Hes making 3/4 of a million. It just sucks, but the program is bigger than 1 coach and we will be fine.SpectrumMagic wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 12:39 amUtah could have put the full court press on. Re: Just here for the meltdown
He had to know they were still gonna come after him and what the salary range might be. Anyway, nothing I can do about it but the combo of telling his players that he was staying and then going not just somewhere, but to that place, sure will take some shine off the Craig Smith era for me.TrueBlueAggie123 wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 12:50 amHe probably didn’t have 2.5 million+ reasons to head down south yet.bluegrouse wrote:Then why was Smith telling his players he wasn’t going anywhere 5 days ago.....Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 12:41 amIt’s legit. Re: Just here for the meltdown
I'm still waiting to see it to believe it. I spoke with not just one, but multiple players and coaches this week who were all absolutely adamant that Craig is sticking around. The Utah job has been open for weeks, and it shouldn't come as a surprise that they came after him and offered him a huge paycheck. So in that case, why double down with your team that you're absolutely sticking around?
If there is any truth to this, he truly couldn't have handled the situation more poorly and I will have lost a lot of respect for him.

Re: Just here for the meltdown
I lose all respect for him if he leaves to coach at the University of Utah. I’m grateful for the hard work he put in and the success he had here, but I wish him all the worst when it comes to basketball in Salt Lake. I have been expecting him to leave and never bought into the narrative that he might be here long term, so had he gone anywhere other than BYU or U of U, I would’ve hoped for his success. Going to University of Utah?? I’ll never root for or respect him again. What a douchebag move (if true).

The only thing i see that could have happened is that it’s one thing to be asked to interview for a job and it’s another to just be given the job. If Utah came to him and said the job is his then that’s very different from a team asking him to interview.
Either way I think we have made it clear where the players and other coaches are at with this. So I agree, if this happens then I too will have lost a lot of respect for Craig.

Re: Just here for the meltdown
Boy, I hope this isn’t true. I’d be happy for Craig to go coach anywhere but U of U or BYU.
For me, it’d completely undermine the last three seasons.
But there are 2 million plus reasons this is probably true. There won’t be a meltdown from me. I absolutely hate it if ends up being true, but I understand it.

From what I’ve heard expect Peterson to follow Craig if he leaves and Tim Miles to be our next coach FWIW.

Agreed. If he leaves, he leaves, and I wish him well. Too bad he would be going to a mediocre program.aggieguy13 wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 12:05 amReally disappointing that after all the good work he did here the best he could do was a middling program in the 6th best power conference. Hopefully this job isn't a dead end job for him, he's got a lot of potential.
On the other hand, the Utes recruit a lot of good talent. Maybe if they actually had a competent coach, they'd be able to do something with it.

If I were Mark Harlin after Jensen, Bryant AND Smith turns me down; my next phone call would be to Houston Rockets Assistant Jeff Hornacek. He's a "big name" guy and the type of player's coach that might play well in college. I'd give him a look IF our coaching job ever opened up as well.

I am grateful for what Craig Smith has done here in three short years. It will be strange to cheer for him to fail at the U. The question is, will he have the integrity to renew the Utah State vs Utah basketball rivalry?

Re: Just here for the meltdown
I think Miles would be a slam dunk hire. The guy has over-achieved everywhere he’s been. Nebraska has fallen back off the map since he left there and he was part way through a nice rebuild job at CSU before that. He helped NDSU transition to D1 before that and knocked off some big boys in the process. He is a small town guy like Craig and has a fun personality too. Many of the coaches in his coaching tree have done really well for themselves. Not sure why all the Tim Miles hate. We’d be lucky to get someone with his experience and track record and it’s not like he is really old or anything.

If Smith were to take that Utah job it’s strictly for a payday because that is a dumpster fire right now that 2 former Utes refused to take over. Their best player just entered the transfer portal. It’s the living embodiment of the age old juvenile “would you eat a piece of crap for a million dollars?” question.
