If I remember correctly he was the only one that showed up against Washington.hickaggie wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2021, 4:32 pmThe floor was spaced pretty good against TT in Brock's favor judging from the fact that no one was within 10 feet of him on about half of his launches. Gonna give him the benefit of the doubt on his back but man that was an opportunity for him to show his value if there ever was one.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2021, 12:36 pmThe staff just has to get it done on the JC/grad transfer market this year. Pretty much that simple.
I hope people get to see how valuable a player like Miller can be if we can add the pieces needed to space the floor.

I would say Rollie stacks up very well compared to this group. If he can increase that shooting percentage, he has the chance to be in the top players of the decade here.
for comparison:
the all-time leading scorer at USU:
Jaycee Carroll/14.7/4.3/1.5/57%/47.6%
Rollie’s numbers next to Merrill’s are super interesting.

Re: 13=13
Just prior to the beginning of Rollie's senior season at Hellsgate, someone here asked me who Rollie favorably compared too coming out of high school. My response was Sam Merrill.Sl7vk wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2021, 8:37 pmWow.Yossarian wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2021, 4:00 pmNow you made me waste more time that I should have spent working. Re: 13=13
Was going through the recruiting thread from last year and Jeff Goodman states that that on March 27, 2019 there were 350 players in the portal. Same date in 2020 there were 460. This year March 23 there are 794. By March 27 it's likely to be near 900 or close to double of last year. A large % of them will be insignificant to us, but there's still going to be a lot of fish in the pond.

Until we hear otherwise, I am going to assume Queta is going pro, Fonso is moving on (per Aggies22), & Karwowski is graduating & moving on. That leaves us with 3 spots available.
Then we have these questions: Will Brock Miller's back allow him to keep playing? Will Bairstow, McChesney, or Shulga transfer? Given the situation I have to think we'll be big players in the transfer market.
(For those who don't know, there's a long standing "13=13" joke around here that goes way back.)

With others reportedly on the fence, my guess is we’ll have 4 or maybe even 5 scholarships to use.

Re: 13=13
I'm okay with Rollie dropping some body fat but not muscle. I think he could benefit from adding another 5 to 10 lbs of solid muscle. He would definitely benefit by leaning up a bit and getting into the 6 to 8 percent body fat range. At his height he's definitely not too heavy for a D1 point guard. My guess is that he hits the weights regularly but probably needs to focus a little more on nutrition. IMO his strength/muscle/size helped him get a starting spot on a D1 basketball team especially as a true freshman. It's unfortunate but a lot of young basketball players neglect weight training and/or nutrition or get started late (e.g., Bairstow, McChesney, Kuba, Ashworth). Rollie's biggest weakness is his outside shooting, he gets to the basket just fine. He is a smart physical player, great passer, great defender, and rebounds well.Madmartigan wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2021, 12:42 pmHe might be a tad too heavy for a D1 point guard. Re: 13=13
I don't know if it has been mentioned, but with the eligibility freeze, if we fill all the openings with high school recruits, we will essentially have 9 freshman on the roster(12 if you count walkons).
That is a really young team. Usually I am not a huge fan of hitting the transfer market too hard, but this year I think we almost have too.

Re: 13=13
There some kids (like the one's you mentioned) whose metabolism and physical makeup just don't allow them to put on weight of any kind until later in life. Unless they start eating at an unhealthy pace, their high metabolism just prevents them from gaining weight like other people do. They can work out and eat, but don't see a lot of bulk/mass accumulating.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑March 24th, 2021, 10:20 amI'm okay with Rollie dropping some body fat but not muscle. Re: 13=13
Yeah it has been a flaw of Smith's coaching to give Miller such a green light. Since the Boise games he is 13-55 from 3 in 8 games played. That is a lot of 3's for a guy who is not making them. Smith is a great basketball mind and should know better. It is a fair criticism and people shouldn't rush to defend Miller's honor each time someone brings it up. Nobody is attacking him personally, just as nobody was attacking Kent Myers personally when we thought Jordan Love should have been the starter sooner.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑March 25th, 2021, 12:14 pmHa, ha no but his wife is smoking hot (but mine is also)! Re: 13=13
Funny thing is I went back and looked at the season stats and Orange is right on Miller. I also think Worster hurt the team just as much as he helped. He gets some slack due to being a freshman and playing through an injury but to me he is more backup than starter. For those saying he drives which makes up for his outside shooting go look how many times he got to the foul line.

Re: 13=13
Honest question, who should have been taking the shots or do you just give it to Queta all the time? Against Boise they did not double Queta and he had 30+ points both games and we lost. If Brock is not shooting 3's who should have taken those 55 three point shots. Anthony was a decent shooter for the number of touches, but Worster, Bean, Ashworth and Anderson certainly weren't hitting 3's at great clips either. Outside of 3 point shooting this team had very few deficiencies and was awesome, but overall was just a poor 3 point shooting team.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑March 25th, 2021, 12:32 pmYeah it has been a flaw of Smith's coaching to give Miller such a green light. He is a freshman. USU is a developmental program and players get better with time in the program. He has all the tools he needs to improve and be starter quality.brian5562 wrote: ↑March 25th, 2021, 12:56 pmFunny thing is I went back and looked at the season stats and Orange is right on Miller. Personally I’d have given Bairstow a longer leash and would have played Ashworth more. If you drop Miller down to closer 20 minutes a game I feel that would have been more idealAggie84025 wrote: ↑March 25th, 2021, 1:05 pmHonest question, who should have been taking the shots or do you just give it to Queta all the time? Where else would he go and be able to collect a scholarship, play meaningful minutes, shoot as much as he wants while being generally bad at basketball? The dude has it great, no way he's giving that up!

Re: 13=13
Preferably nobody when the team was that bad shooting 3's. You don't have to take 3's just to take them. Even against Colorado State where we won, I thought we took way too many 3's when 25 of our 61 shots were from deep.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑March 25th, 2021, 1:05 pmHonest question, who should have been taking the shots or do you just give it to Queta all the time? As for Miller specifically he took almost double the 3's per game as the next closest guy. After his back injury he clearly wasn't the same shooter, but yet he was still shooting at a similar volume.

Now that's being blessed with foresight.Real Life Aggie wrote: ↑March 24th, 2021, 12:57 pmIn the delivery room I commented to his parents that I knew he'd be a two sport star and two-time Montana Gatorade POY.Yossarian wrote: ↑March 24th, 2021, 12:01 pmI was scouting him when he was in 5th grade and I can remember telling people that of all the pee wee football players in the region, he would be the most likely to throw a football 65 yards.bigskysbro wrote: ↑March 24th, 2021, 11:27 amI'll see your foresight and raise you my response. Last year when the board was debating which freshman could come in and have an immediate impact, I repeatedly said that I thought Rollie was the most physically ready of all the incoming freshman.aggies22 wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2021, 9:13 pmJust prior to the beginning of Rollie's senior season at Hellsgate, someone here asked me who Rollie favorably compared too coming out of high school. My response was Sam Merrill.Sl7vk wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2021, 8:37 pmWow.Yossarian wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2021, 4:00 pmNow you made me waste more time that I should have spent working. Here are the freshman year stats for some recent impactful freshmen (guard/wing) players that we have had:AggieFanNate wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2021, 3:40 pmHow many freshmen has USU had in the past that could produce like he did right off the bat?GeoAg wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2021, 3:21 pmI agree on the shooting. I also think he is an adequate creator and finisher in the MWC. In the tourney...no bueno. Texas Tech was his nightmare. He'll get better, but I would prefer to have some insurance there.
Name/ppg/rpg/apg/FG%/3-pt FG%
Rollie Worster/9.1/3.8/3.5/40.6%/28.4%
Brock Miller/6.8/1.4/0.2/42.9%/47.4%
Koby McEwen/14.4/5.0/3.0/49.7%/42%
Sam Merrill/9.1/3.0/3.2/45%/45%
Jalen Moore/5.6/2.7/0.8/58.4%/38.9%
Preston Medlin/3.7/0.7/0.6/46.2%/37.5%
I would say Rollie stacks up very well compared to this group. If he can increase that shooting percentage, he has the chance to be in the top players of the decade here.
for comparison:
the all-time leading scorer at USU:
Jaycee Carroll/14.7/4.3/1.5/57%/47.6%
Rollie’s numbers next to Merrill’s are super interesting.

Re: 13=13
The transfer portal has been absolutely blowing up with all kinds of kids who have pretty good stats from their previous team. There's plenty of talent in it. If we can't land some decent players from the portal it feels like a pretty big fail.
Nevada has already landed two big time 4 star transfers. A Center from Texas & a SF from Oregon. Both were top 50 recruits in the nation coming out of HS.
There's now nearly 900 kids in it.
