Next Year in the MW

Post by Yossarian » March 14th, 2021, 2:15 pm

I know there was discussion in another thread about this, but i think the top of the MW could look quite different next year than this year.

I wouldn't be surprised to see CSU, Nevada, and Wyoming as the top 3 in the conference standings at the end of the season.

I don't think USU has enough coming in to replace the loss of Queta.

SDSU loses like 4 or 5 guys.

BSU loses Allston and one or two others.

Expecting Liam to be a big surprise next year. We will be a different looking team next year, but still formidable. Also, Zapala will surprise.

I imagine the transfer portal will be crazy this year. Spring and even summer recruiting could change the outlook drastically, however looking at this snapshot in time I can’t disagree. I do think SDSU will surly reload.

I hope we're not putting all our eggs in the Zapala/McChesney "potential" basket. They have limited experience and the little they have played has been less than impressive.

I would love to find a 6'6" - 6'8" wing that can score at all three levels and play defense for next year.

There are going to be a lot of changes in the MWC over the next two months involving a lot of players coming and going as well as coaches. We will not know what the conference will look like till then.

I see Fresno St and UNLV staying about where they are at. UNM should separate from SJSU and AFA at the bottom.

Zapala will surprise? I keep hearing this but does anyone have a reason for this thought. After watching him in limited minutes, he looks slow and uncoordinated. Not once have I thought.... he looks like he's going to be good.

From my understanding Utah State's mostly bringing everybody back except for probably Queta, but I'm sure a few more will leave if Smith leaves. The surprise team next year will be Wyoming. I know for many of us it'll either be a tossup between Nevada and Wyoming as the surprise team. I pick Wyoming and I think they'll be a top 4 team in the league next year. Probably the most interesting story lines will be coaching turnover. I'm curious to see who New Mexico hires. I'm also curious who leaves and who stays in the league. I hope our guy stays.

USU will see a huge drop defensively and I don't see where we improve at all offensively where we were average, at best, this season.

There will be couple of surprise teams. Someone that is expected to be at the top will struggle and someone that is expected to be in rebuilding mode will surprise everyone by competing at the top. Hopefully, we are the surprise team.

Sure, but NBA lottery pics don't grow on trees. Good luck with that!

Did Zapala look frustratingly slow the times he came in? I thought he did. Very slow to react. I hope I am wrong but I worry greatly if he is our immediate future. Maybe the transfer portal can get us a 6’10” athletic guy to fill the void.
Someone who wants to fill Queta’s shoes to go with Yos’s 6’8” guy.

Transfer portal? Any core guys? Are Sherfield/Cambridge/Washington/Hymes staying? Meeks looking to transfer and get a year of eligibility-pause so he can recover more?

I don't know who may be leaving. There are currently 13 guys on scholarship and all are eligible to return. However, there are two freshmen coming in as well. As such, somebody is leaving.

While not impossible, there are currently 6 roster spots filled by guys who have already transferred or used a redshirt year. It seems unlikely any of them will leave. That list is Sherfield, Cambridge, Washington, Hymes, Patterson and Baker.

7 guys could transfer. That list is Robinson and the 6 freshmen Alford has brought in. Of that group I would probably look to the guys who played the fewest minutes. But youneverknow.

We need two guys that can create their own shot and create for others on a regular basis. With Queta and a smaller extent Anderson leaving we will be down to just one, 3 is ideal 4 with one off the bench is the making for a big run, with solid role players. A big, a guard, and a wing that can create would be huge!

Yauhen Massalski. This dude will be a hot ticket item but any team looking for an experienced and productive grad transfer center could do worse.

I would like to get UMASS big man Tre Mitchell who is in the portal. He averaged 18.8 PPG and 7.2 RPG. He will be one of the highly sought after and probably a long shot. However, he would be a good replacement for Queta!
