Sam in the G League

I was able to catch the second half of the game. Sam is really impressive. Along with his great shooting, he's added a lot of size, he's a great defender and has such a great/natural feel for the game. Obviously we all knew this, but dang i've missed watching him play.

Much better effort from Merrill in Game 2. Pulled at the 3:22 mark in the fourth quarter (I assume he will not re-enter). Stats at this point:

31 minutes played
20 points (game high)
8-14 FG
4-6 3-pointers
0 rebounds
6 assists
2 steals
2 turnovers

The six assists tied the game high as well!

I watched the game, should have been 5-7 from three, as one of his threes was incorrectly counted as a two pointer. Best player in this game IMHO.

I imagine most people on here, if they are going to buy a Sam Merrill jersey would prefer a Milwaukee Bucks one, but they are selling Merrill jerseys at the Memphis Hustle gift shop:

His shot looks better than ever. He seems like he has more arch on it. He used to shoot it more flat and used the back of the rim like it was back board. It worked but shots are dropping cleaner now and he’s also shooting from way deep.

You can still get a swingman jersey from the Bucks Pro Shop. They used to have an individual listing for both Sam and Jordan Nwora, but now you have to select them from the drop down menu on the “any player” jersey.

The most impressive part of his stat line was that it came on the second half of a back-to-back in his first time playing significant minutes in nearly a year. I was especially happy to see him bounce back so strong because he looked pretty winded towards the end of the first game.

Yeah I might get one of those. I still occasionally wear basketball jerseys if I am working out or something, but they aren't something I wear a ton of at this stage.

I would buy a game worn Bucks and even a game worn Hustle jersey though as a collector's item just as I want Aggie game worn jerseys.

Completely agree with this. The chance to log significant minutes while being watched by the Bucks staff and other NBA teams is so much better than sitting on the Bucks bench and occasionally getting minutes.

Yep. Better for him to get big minutes and have performances like he had last night than sit at the end of the bench all season. He is proving himself right now to not just the Bucks, but the rest of the league. Hard to prove yourself when you don't get in the game.

Bucks should play Merrill over Augustin. But they gave Augustin a three year $21 million contract. That was stupid.

It’s helpful to have the Deseret News reporting on our player in the NBA. Because without their reporting, I would not know that Sam scored 16 points yesterday, while shooting 8-14 from the field and hitting 4 threes . . .

Not a great game today - just got his third foul in the first half. They called him for a block and he was standing there for like 10 seconds before the guy ran into him.

Any points? I tuned in just in time to see him go to the bench. It’s rec league style basketball in the G League that’s for sure. Not sure what’s really being developed.

Sam has 4 pts but is 2-9 form the field. The whole team is shooting bad. No one can hit a shot.

I don't know that the Bucs have done Sam any favors with this. NBA teams have their own G-League team with coaches who are connected to the organization and work with the NBA team to develop players. Usually the G-League team is tightly linked to the NBA team in they things they want to coach and develop with the players, the kind of systems they run, etc.

But the Bucs didn't send their G-League team to the G-League bubble, so they sent Sam to play with the Memphis team. It's not the same circumstances, not their team. I don't know how much good he's going to get from it. Hopefully he doesn't get too frustrated.

Plus they run an offense that is reminiscent of Duryea’s 30 threes per game approach.
