Scouting the MW?
Now that league play is starting what are some of the thoughts of how we matchup against the other teams and which teams seem like threats to make a run in the conference.?

Re: Scouting the MW?
It is really tough to tell because some schools have only played a couple of games...From what I have seen you match up well with your 5 starters. I do think you need to get more production off your bench to be a top contender. If you can you should be fine.
I still think SDSU is a really complete unit and they will be very tough to beat.
Boise and CSU are sort of unknowns so far but I think both teams will be good
UNLV is a year or 2 away.
Those were the top 5 picks in the preseason poll.

I agree. Although csu scored 33 pts yesterday vs st Mary’s. 33!nvspuds wrote: ↑December 20th, 2020, 11:59 amIt is really tough to tell because some schools have only played a couple of games...From what I have seen you match up well with your 5 starters. Re: Scouting the MW?
Every school has a clunker or 2 in them. However, I think SDSU is the only MW school that would be competitive in the WCC. That conference is loaded this year.

Re: Scouting the MW?
Is the WCC loaded or do they have Gonzaga, St Mary's and BYU followed by a bunch of high school teams. I figure zags are legitimate, St Mary's is a tough team but not at the same level of the zags. Then BYU is kind of a wild card. They are going to surprise some teams but they are a big drop off from the zags. SDSU would be fighting for a spot with BYU and St Mary's. Obviously BYU beat them the other day but I think they have a better chance against the other 2 teams than BYU.

Re: Scouting the MW?
USF is really really good..It is just a better and deeper conference, period..However, it doesn't have to stay that way..
I think the MW is at a crossroad..They can bounce back or regress further..It isn't about the size of the arena..It is about recruiting, coaching and easy travel. Almost every school plays in a destination area
As much as it displeases, the MW needs UNLV, NM and SDSU to be really good at the same time. That raises all boats.

Re: Scouting the MW?
I respectfully disagree. Boise would be fine in that conference. Usu would be fine in that league as would several others in our conference. Usu would compete just fine vs st Mary’s and the game with BYU could have gone either way. And those two are the second tier in that conference after Gonzaga.
With that said i 100% agree with your statement that in order for the mw to boost itself nationally we need unlv and New Mexico to improve.

Other than SDSU I do't see any MW school finishing higher than 6th..But that is just this year so far..Things can improve..

Boise did just win in Provo.
USF is weird. They beat Virginia but have a loss against umass Lowell.
What has Santa Clara done to impress other than mid to bottom big sky teams by a half dozen points.

Re: Scouting the MW?
They don't have to do much..They are the fifth best team in the WCC..If you want to believe that the WCC is not better than the MW, I can' stop you..But they have been rated higher for years..This is also, the worst the MW has been in years..
Maybe, next year will be better..

I agree with nvspuds that the WCC is better than the MW this year.
There’s not a chance in hell USF or Santa Clara is better than Boise. Also hard to make a case for BYU when Boise just beat them in Provo.

Re: Scouting the MW?
One game does not a season make..Everybody has an off night from time to time..USF is by far the very best team NV has played this season and it wasn't even close..I am not sure the Pack will play anybody tougher this season.
But sometimes it just comes down to match ups in a given game..However, it is basically a make or miss shots game. When they are dropping good things are possible.

Re: Scouting the MW?
That's only because you don't play Massachusetts lowell, the 1-3 team that beat USF or RI, the 3-5 team that beat them. But no the fifth best wcc team is totally better than sdsu and Boise.nvspuds wrote:One game does not a season make..Everybody has an off night from time to time..USF is by far the very best team NV has played this season and it wasn't even close..I am not sure the Pack will play anybody tougher this season.

Re: Scouting the MW?
The number geeks and bookies aren't real gung-ho on the strength of the MWC. KenPom has San Diego St. as 2 pt. favorites against St. Marys on a neutral court Tuesday night. Opening line will be close to that. It appears that St. Marys is a slightly watered down version of themselves this year, but the "smart" guys don't think the cream of the MWC is all that powerful.

Oh I’m not either on Boise. But I’m not convinced of the wonderful ness of the 2-5 teams in the wcc in the either. With that said spuds I respect your opinion and enjoy reading it on here as well.

Re: Scouting the MW?
It seems like this debate pops up every year. The WCC and MWC constantly flip on who’s better top to bottom. This year it looks like the WCC, last year it was probably pretty close maybe the MWC. All I know the WCC had zero draft picks....MWC 4. The season is young, will tell. Either way right now Gonzaga is in a league of their own, SDSU has been close these last couple of years.

Re: Scouting the MW?
I will say, it’s hard to say how the MW will shake out.
SDSU, Boise, USU, and UNLV are the only teams that have played the majority of their games against teams with a pulse. Seems like everyone else scheduled the little sisters of the poor or had a lot of games cancelled. Nevada is kind of the one outlier with a middle of the road schedule and middle of the road record. I am pretty confident Nevada is middle of the road, SDSU and Boise are good, and SJSU is really bad. The rest I don’t know, and I’ll include USU in the “don’t know” category.

Re: Scouting the MW?
We are the number 3 team in the conference. Can be elite defensively with a offense that is improving. With our youth I expect to continue to improve quite a bit. We will win a lot of games in conference.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑December 21st, 2020, 11:28 pmI will say, it’s hard to say how the MW will shake out.

SDSU-They had a sticker of a game last time out. Other wins vs pac 12 look good
Boise-Good team. Who steps up as the star
Usu
Csu-33 pts vs st Mary’s. Yikes. Some talent on that roster though
Unlv-Most disappointing team thus far
Wyoming-Most improved team thus far
Fresno-Who know
Nevada-have some solid guards
New Mexico-See fresno
Air Force-not very good. I hope we don’t lay an egg there
SJSU-Uh really bad

Csu beat Santa Clara by 13 today at Santa Clara. Doesn’t always mean they are the better team. But a win is a win.

Well, that turned out to be bit more than 2pts. That was domination.Bank Shot wrote:The number geeks and bookies aren't real gung-ho on the strength of the MWC. Yeah I’m there with ya. I’m not sold on WCC being significantly better than the MW. Conferences are pretty even in my eyes except their best is a bit better than our best (Zags>Aztecs). If you match up 1v1, 2v2, 3v3,......10v10, and the MW 11th team doesn’t play (SJSU), I’d take my chances that the MW would win at least half of those 10 matchups.

AF will surprise many with this young team and new coach. They'll make you defend them for 28seconds each possession and then hound you with matchup zone on defense.

Re: Scouting the MW?
Yep. After last season, I am not going to be super confident. I'd predict a split and hope for a sweep. Air Force shut down Sam Merrill and beat us by 19 last year. AJ Walker can make 3s. Our perimeter defense will need to be improved from where it has been.slcagg wrote: ↑December 24th, 2020, 1:01 pmI would not be surprised to see us split.
