Biggest Newcomer Impact
We have probably discussed this already, but who do you think will have the biggest impact as a newcomer and why? I really am not very familiar with our new guys, so I am looking for some good info on who to watch for.

Do you count Marco? If so it is him.. otherwise reports are that Rollie worster will also start.

Re: Biggest Newcomer Impact
If Worster starts, that bodes well for the team. Ashworth has played against some top level, national competition in high school and more than held his own. If Worster starts ahead of him, that is a good sign for the USU back court. The front court is as deep as I have ever seen at USU.

Re: Biggest Newcomer Impact
So are we thinking that at some point this year the main starting lineup will be Worster, Anthony, Miller, Bean, Queta?
That would leave Bairstow, McChesney, Alphonzo Anderson off the bench? That is a pretty good 8 man rotation right there, not even taking into account any of the other guys.
What is the scouting report on Steven Ashworth - will he get some run as a Fr.? What about Nigel John?

I’d agree from what I’ve read with Steven being the 9th guy. Nigel de committed once zapala committed.Mr. Sneelock wrote: ↑November 23rd, 2020, 2:56 pmSo are we thinking that at some point this year the main starting lineup will be Worster, Anthony, Miller, Bean, Queta?

When does Miller get forced to the bench? We need to not have that chucker playing full time if he can't hit closer to 40% form 3.

Watching Miller brick 3s last year was absolutely maddening. Hopefully he got the yips out of his system or at least doesn't play as much.

I'm going to say it is Anthony because he'll have the biggest opportunity to make an impact.

I hope Ashworth plays, kind of. I'd like to have 4 full seasons out of him. He's going to be a great Aggie. It will be interesting to see what the plan is for him.

I don't know much about him and I've never seen him play. What do you think the ceiling is for him? Like Jared Quayle level by the time he is a junior? If he is anything close to that, I'll be happy.

Re: Biggest Newcomer Impact
Yeah Anthony if you count him as a newcomer. If you count only Freshmen, I would have said Liam but I hear he may have a setback. For some reason I have a good feeling about both Shulga and the Russian Wing (Zahar?). I think Shulga will be a solid all-around wing that can guard, distribute, and score, whereas I see Zahar as having that clutch shooting gene and confidence for late game heroics.

Re: Biggest Newcomer Impact
Who get's redshirted? Zahar Vedischev is a long guard and can flat out shoot!! I think that McChesney needs to play and Bairstow has to show improvement. Both need some time on the court. Does that squeeze out Miller from getting significant time? That doesn't even include Anderson, who saved our bacon a couple times last year and should be in the rotation.
If what someone is saying Worster is a starter you have to go with:
G Worster (impact)
G Anthony (impact)
F Bean
F McChesney (impact)
C Queta
Rotation
G Bairstow
G Vedischev
G Miller
F Anderson
C Dorius
Seems like coach has some solid players, how much can they play before they can be given the redshirt? Also, getting back to the topic at hand, seems, outside of Anthony, McChesney or Worster have a good chance at making the biggest impact. Hope they all do!!
Can't wait for the starting roster to come out......GO AGGIES!!

Re: Biggest Newcomer Impact
Nobody should get redshirted this year. This year has no implications on eligibility status, according to the NCAA. Everyone will essentially be the same class next season as this season with no penalty for playing in 1 game or 31 games this season. This means, Queta could play 3 more seasons at USU, if he so desired.IBleedAggieBlue wrote: ↑November 23rd, 2020, 5:31 pmWho get's redshirted? Zahar Vedischev is a long guard and can flat out shoot!! That's who I think of, exactly. He's a winner, and is just steady and solid. I'm no expert (although I did play JV ball at USU) but I just have a really good feeling about the kid.

What to expect out of Shulga and Vedechev?
I hope I'm wrong, but I'm thinking Adam Thoseberry. It's tough to know with foreign players

This is the best recruiting class I can remember (going back to the 80s). I don't think there's a bad player among them.

NOT even CLOSE!! These are two very high level international players. Max Shulga is probably the most unheralded of the bunch.

Re: Biggest Newcomer Impact
This was Thoseberry's profile from high school. On paper, that is a pretty impressive senior season.
HIGH SCHOOL: Prior to coming to the United States, Thoseby played his senior season of high school with the Under 18 Reading Rockets where he averaged nearly 27.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game... During his final game of the season in a national finals appearance, he scored 34 points hitting 8-of-10 three-pointers.

I truly hope so but honestly what makes you think that? Did he get more athletic, become a better ball-handler, or learn how to guard in the offseason? Or do you believe that because he'll simply chuck 'em up less often?AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑November 23rd, 2020, 9:26 pmI think Miller is going to get off the shneid and have a big year. Miller doesn't need to be something he's not. He's strictly a catch-and-shoot 3-point guy. That's all he is and all I need him to be. It's a role we need.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑November 25th, 2020, 11:56 amI truly hope so but honestly what makes you think that? Here's what I hope to see this year: Miller's 3pt % closer to 40% instead of 30%. When a defender comes at him, either pump fake and draw contact (3 shots at the line), or take a dribble and step sideways and shoot the three. That's it. Do that and I'm happy.

Re: Biggest Newcomer Impact
Why am I worried about Marco? His last year he played at Virginia, he averaged 1 point per game...shot Below 30% from the field and about the same from 3point land. 66% free throws. That actually scares me. Someone please put me more at ease.

Re: Biggest Newcomer Impact
How about this for at ease: He can defend 1 through 4. He can handle. The team has a ton of Freshman wings that can score, and three returning bigs that are good. If Marco is trying to carry the team with scoring, we're doing it wrong.

I think from everything I have heard from practice that Rollie is going to be a lot bigger deal In this team than we currently think. If it’s true that he is starting as a true freshman than Coach Smith knows his potential.

I believe Rollie will be the one taking on Sam’s role. Obviously not to the same extent (I’d be really happy with a third of the production) but he will be the most similar player to Sam on the team.Winning Team wrote: ↑November 25th, 2020, 12:36 pmI think from everything I have heard from practice that Rollie is going to be a lot bigger deal In this team than we currently think. Marco may not be an elite scorer, but he is definitely the most polished of all the newcomers: can defend, handle, and is terrific finishing around the rim.

Re: Biggest Newcomer Impact
That has not been something he has been able to do in the past. He looks awkward dribbling - even just a bounce or two. He could be a very legitimate scoring threat if he could learn to pump fake once in a while when people close out on him. If he could give a head/shoulder fake and drive to the basket with confidence, that would free him up on his three point shots so much more. Right now, no opposing team has to defend him other than at the 3-point line - and even then, the odds are very much in the defense's favor that he'll miss.brownjeans wrote: ↑November 25th, 2020, 12:14 pmMiller doesn't need to be something he's not. Re: Biggest Newcomer Impact
Driving to the basket, finishing, or creating, that might as well be the moon. We don't need Miller to be a complete player. Let's just use his strengths. I only want him taking 3s and shooting FTs. If his man stays tight on him on the 3-point line the entire game, I'm okay with that - that creates space for other players. That means his defender can't help on penetration or help double Queta. If Miller only takes 3s, goes 2 for 5 every game with an average of 2 free-throws/game — that would be AMAZING improvement.Yossarian wrote: ↑November 25th, 2020, 12:46 pmThat has not been something he has been able to do in the past.
