The hoops players have been granted the same eligibility freeze for the 2020-21 season that the football players were previously granted.

Maybe ok but unless the scholarship numbers increase you might not be able to add any recruits, also to increase scholarships in this time of budget losses is a problem I would think.

I don't know but doesn't this open up a possible lawsuit on behalf of incoming freshmen not getting a scholarship they signed an LOI to confirm..?

Adding two or three hoops players would be cheaper than adding 20+ football schollies.

Well most likely it could be both. I do wonder why a kid that has a degree, and perhaps redshirted would want to continue unless he is going after a MBA.

If the kid does not aspire to play pro ball, I would say he would hang around for two reasons, continuing his education and love of the game.

I’m not too worried for men’s hoops. Don’t have very many scholarships to give out next season.

Imma keep it simple, Go Aggies.

So to me the most interesting thing will be the redshirt decision. Does the coaching staff see any value in redshirting a new freshman now? How would that even work? Do they play this year, then redshirt next year as a freshman? Could we have one of our new freshman around for the next 6 years? Can they now technically redshirt two years in a row and if that is the case why redshirt anyone this year? Seems like this year it will be all bodies can play and no redshirts? If someone who normally would have redshirted ends up riding the pine I could see a few more departures come next spring as an unintended consequence.

One of the main issues is with the number of players that creates on your team. Most teams only keep a rotations ~8 players later in the season. In a normal roster of ~13 players, ~5 players never see too much time. Now add in 2-3 more to that a player would have to want to pursue a masters degree or really love being on the team.

Definitely some stuff for the coaches to work out, but I figure it can only be a positive for the team.

From what I understand the extra year tacked on at the end of a player's career will not count against the 13 scholarship limit for each team. The player can still be on scholarship, paid for by the school, but they won't have to renege on any LOI's.

I have no idea how they will handle redshirting. Definitely going to be interesting.

Conceivably, a player could play every game this year as a freshman, and return next year as a freshman. Not sure if the basketabll redshirting rules are like football where you can play in X% of games and still redshirt, but if so, that same player could play some games his second year, and redshirt.

That player would then be a redshirt freshman in his third season in the program having played 30-40 games. I imagine this will be rare for a number of reasons though but interesting to think about what results could come from this.

That's how I'm seeing it as well, although in basketball a player can't play any games besides exhibition and still maintain his redshirt status (during a normal season). But it is conceivable that a player could play 25-30 games this season (postseason included), then redshirt next year and essentially have 4 years to play after that. Unless there are some added stipulations to this "Free year" that I am not aware of.

I understand the love of the game and all but if I was to advise a kid that had his degree, perhaps it is time to move on. In football the reason to move on is the cost it puts on the body as well as the risk of serous injury. Basketball is a not as bad in those areas but it sometimes it is time to move on. If a kid has gone on a mission, had a red shirt, and now gets another year, he needs to move on with his regular life.

A problem for many schools is the number of scholarships will cost a fortune, because this applies to all sports

I suppose, but you could just as easily argue for sticking around that extra year to get a graduate degree and enjoy college life while doing something you love. Most guys will have something better to move on to, but not all.

My guess is this will work itself out naturally between kids wanting to move on, schools only bringing back so many guys eligible to come back for budget reasons, and the natural attrition all programs go through. There will be a swelling of scholarship numbers next year, but I suspect that it will return to normal pretty quickly.

So... can you guys explain like I'm a 5 year old what exactly this means? Does this mean that all players basically get 5 years? Next season, they all come back in the same class as before, or have a special notation instead of redshirt (Instead of being a RS Junior, we could have CV Juniors or something)?

If a player has used or will use his redshirt year and he also exhausts his eligibility, they will have the opportunity to play up to six years.

It all depends on the situation. There are certainly players that we have had that are older than your average college kid and they have worked out well. You can also work towards a Masters or another degree. It is all what the coach and player believe. If a player can help us win games, nobody should have a problem with him coming back for another year.
