5. San Diego State
There’s simply no replacing Malachi Flynn, a second-team All-American and the cornerstone for so much of the Aztecs’ offensive attack. But Brian Dutcher still has loads of talent on hand, including senior wings Matt Mitchell and Jordan Schakel. A healthy Nathan Mensah in the middle would provide a huge boost defensively, and Maryland transfer Joshua Tomaic could fill the Yanni Wetzell facilitator role up front. Cal State Northridge transfer Terrell Gomez is an intriguing addition as a high-scoring, 5-foot-8 shooting guard.
We know San Diego State will defend. The Aztecs have ranked in the top 30 in defensive efficiency in six of the past seven years, and they’re coming off a third top-10 finish in the past six seasons. Dutcher’s new emphasis on spacing and shooting should work well again with this cast. Don’t expect more flirtations with an undefeated season, but this should still be your Mountain West favorite.
8. Utah State
We know this about the Aggies: They will be enormous. Start with 7-footer Neemias Queta, who was injured most of the season but put up these averages from Feb. 5 on: 15.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. Playing next to him at forward is the 6-7 Justin Bean, who produced a season-long double-double (11.9 points, 10.5 rebounds). Craig Smith also can go with 7-2 center Kuba Karwowski, 7-foot sophomore Trevin Dorius, 6-10 senior Klay Stall and the recently signed 6-11 Szymon Zapala.
Who’s going to get the ball to all of these mountain men? Good question, as Sam Merrill, Diego Brito and Abel Porter all departed. Marco Anthony, who transferred from Virginia, will be eligible, and Brock Miller returns. Utah State also just brought in Max Shulga, a guard from Ukraine who played well in the 2019 FIBA U-19 European Championship. Smith will have to figure out how to make the roster work, but the Aggies will be extremely tough to handle inside.
10. BYU
Here’s what the Cougars must replace, statistically speaking, after the graduation of Yoeli Childs, T.J. Haws and Jake Toolson: 65 percent of the team’s scoring, 49 percent of its rebounds, 63 percent of its assists and 50 percent of its made 3-pointers. Yowza. So how is BYU still in the top 10? Landing grad transfer Matt Haarms from Purdue (over Kentucky and Texas Tech, no less) was a coup for Mark Pope. Haarms isn’t a star and won’t be an offensive force, but he should be as good a rim protector as there is in the WCC. Kolby Lee is a candidate to take a big step forward after averaging seven points as a sophomore, and Alex Barcello provides experience in the backcourt. Plus, Pope is still hunting for a grad transfer or two at guard; if that happens, the Cougars should be the second-best team in the league behind behemoth (and non-mid-major) Gonzaga.

Re: Usu number 8
I think it's funny how the specify in the beginning of the article and again in the BYU-Provo section that Gonzaga isn't a mid-major. I mean, I get it... It'd get old every single year calling out Gonzaga as the #1 mid-major to look out for, because they're gonna be awesome.

Re: Usu number 8
The Dorius scholarship question also pops up in many threads. Maybe we need a threat devoted to things that 22 has cleared up, just for reference.
