I think they expected this when they signed the Gomez kid from Northridge. He's a scorer, but don't know if he checks all the other boxes that Flynn did. Flynn leaving is probably just fake news though, because SDSU claimed it was certain that he would return. Just like he thought McDaniels would be back this year, and that baby McD was committed to Sam Diogo St. instead of UW.

That’s 2 teams we’ve broken now, UNR 2018/19 and SDSU 2019/20. Maybe that’s a bit of a stretch but it’s still awesome Flynn’s last game was a loss in the MWC title game at the hands of Sam Merrill.

While this is good news for us winning, I wanted Flynn back. It would have led to a stronger conference.

But good for him! I'm sure he'll do well in the draft.

I agree partially, SDSU still has some talent so they’ll still be a top tier team but losing Flynn makes the conference lose some flash.

I agree 100%. I wanted him to stay.

With that said San Diego st has loss 3 of their top 4 players from last year. While they have a very good recruiting class (Che Evans is going to be very good) and have good returning talent, I think they have lost more than us overall.

I'm not sure why so many of you care about conference strength? The days of the Mountain West getting three or more bids have likely passed us by. The P5 schools rule the NCAA and a ridiculous number of schools from each of those conferences will continue to take up many of the bids when the NCAA tournament resumes. In my opinion, the best we can hope for is a two-bid league at best. As long as we are one of those two teams year in and year out, I'm good.

It hurts the conference, but deep down I am happy because of the arrogance from their fan base. Does anyone know if he hired an agent, it could not find it in the article?

I dont know about that. Mw got 5 in in the 2013 tourney. Do p5 schools really rule the NCAA more than at that point? The new g league policy hurts the p5 programs far more than it hurts the mountain west. Problem with the mountain west is unlv and new Mexico have not lived up to their potential. Just as USU was a good coach away from being back, both of those programs are as well. Unlv might have him now.

For one, it makes all our conference wins better. I'm not looking for a Big West or WAC where we can dominate against meh competition. I want a bunch of competitive schools, all contending.

Secondly, we perform at the level we're expected to. If we're in a conference that's better, we'll perform better. The crux of Stew's teams was that they couldn't punch in what should have been their weight class because they weren't accustomed to the competition.

Thirdly, the Aggies are able to learn about what the Aggies can do. Malachi Flynn leading SDSU challenged us to step up and improve our game. We went toe-to-toe with them in Viejas, then we beat them in the conference championship. In a parallel world where COVID-19 didn't end everything, we went into the NCAA tournament knowing that we could roll with any of the 1 seeds because we'd just barely done it. We weren't intimidated by the numbers, and we knew how capable we were.

Fourth, and the one I'll most readily concede that I'm incorrect because I'm not an expert, is that the performance/clout of the MW will impact recruiting. The better the overall conference is, the easier it is to recruit talent. The ability for $hitty P5 schools to consistently bring it great recruits (even though there are much better non-P5 schools recruiting them) speaks to this.

It is better long term and short term for the conference to have several quality teams. More value for tv discussions and def more money for the conference by going to the actual tournament.

I'd agree with that. UNLV and New Mexico are traditionally strong basketball programs. Having them be down as hurt the conference.

I'm also all for conference strength. I think it's pretty cool that for the second year in a row we had a team from the MWC being ranked in the top 10 at one point during the year. Even cooler that we still ended up winning the tournament both years despite that.

Bench warmer.

SDSU is looking for a grad transfer big guy. This leaves them with only one guy on the roster over 6’7”.

Flynn declares for draft

How will Flynn do in the NBA? I’m not sold on him. I think he is a VERY good player and very talented, but I just don’t think he has that killer instinct.

He is currently slated to be the 43rd pick on https://www.nbadraft.net/nba-mock-drafts/

He is an example of the changing culture with regards to college basketball. A player like him would not have left early 20 years ago.

Ethan Strauss, who writes for the Athletic lists his 5 NBA sleepers.

5. Sam Merrill | 6-5 guard | 23 years old, senior | Utah State
It irks me that conference rules prevent me from showing you film of Merrill. It irks me because his highlights are among college basketball’s best. His game-winner against San Diego State is one of the most memorable plays from the abbreviated season. It was also classic Merrill: Slick handles in isolation, culminating in a dead-on contested 3.

He will be in his mid-20s on draft day and has a tax accountant’s body, but my word, he is filthy. He’s one of the best shooters in college basketball and he so often does it off the bounce, with step-backs and hesitations. He’s not just a 3-point shooter, either. Merrill can create and score in the paint. What Merrill will not be able to provide, in all likelihood, is defense. Because of this, it will be an uphill battle for Merrill to make it in the league. Still, I’m holding out hope for the guy who torched Nevada for 39 points in March. I think he just might have the skill level to crack a rotation. Perhaps what he needs to do is improve as an off-ball threat. In other words, Merrill’s NBA future might depend on his turning into a J.J. Redick type, versus the Luka Dončić imitation he pulled off in the Mountain West Conference.

And Flynn...

3. Malachi Flynn | 6-1 guard | 21 years old, “junior” | San Diego State
What a breakout season this guy had after transferring from Washington State. There are concerns about his size at the next level, specifically how his laudable shot making might translate to an NBA setting and whether he is too small for too many defensive assignments. It should be noted, however, that Flynn did contribute to an excellent Aztec defense with his tenacity and anticipation (3.2 steals per 100 possessions). Flynn plays with command in pick-and-roll and is, at the very least, a proven winner who led SDSU to new heights. In his last college season, Flynn flashed the ability to make many different kinds of passes plus the ability to get his own shot. There’s a decent chance that he continues to do so in the pros.

As an aside, I’m also intrigued by the Aztecs’ Matt Mitchell, a strong wing who can shoot and guard. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mitchell cracks the senior sleeper rankings next year.

Well said. I also like his addition about Matt Mitchell. We've made fun of him on this boards a bit, but really, he's an incredible player who deserves that call out.

I see Sam being a lot like Luke Kennard. He could fill that role for a team if they give him a chance.

I'm not sold that Sam won't be able to play defense. He's very underrated defensively. If anyone re-watches the MW Title game, his defense was just as vital as his offense. He forced about five turnovers in that second half and Flynn shot 5-20 with Sam as his primary defender.

Agreed. We've also all heard anecdotally (and seen in games) that Sam wants to guard their best player. I think he's an excellent defensive player and deserves more credit than he gets. But the question here is: does that ability actually transfer over to the NBA? It's a completely different tier of players. I imagine that's the point being made.

As a side note, I don't know how much Ethan Strauss actually watched Sam. Calling iso ball "classic Merrill" seems to indicate that he's just seen some highlights, not the comprehensive game of Sam. I won't argue that he had a string of great iso plays in the tail end of the season/tourney, but that's not his game... he just did really well when he did it. I do, however, like the classification as "filthy"... I laughed.

It hurts the Aztecs that Flynn left, but they are still a solid team. Next year I see three teams making it (if there is a season). UNLV, probably SDSU, and then another one from Utah St, Nevada, Boise, CSU, Wyoming, New Mexico.

Many of the NBA mock draft experts have not watch basketball outside their favorite teams. Merrill is going in as the top player of conference tournament basketball.

And he'll only get better. He has great instincts. With NBA strength training and diet - he'll get stronger and lighter and his push will get faster (start, stop, lateral). I'm sure he'll put in the film work too. Guys can be good defenders if they want to be.
I don't think Sam will be a bad defender. He may not become a lock-down Gary Payton kind of guy - he lacks the raw athleticism and length, but he should be able to be good enough that he won't be a liability to his team.
