I know, I'm surprised he got an offer from somewhere big. But maybe cause of back problems, he isn't capable of playing 32 minutes a game, so he decided to go somewhere that would only use him for a few minutes a game instead off the bench instead of the smaller schools that would try to get 30 minutes a game out of him.

Will he be on an athletic scholarship? Regardless, congrats to Abel on furthering his education and basketball days at Ohio State!

Looks like the dominoes fell just the right way for Abel. Wish him well and hope he gets an opportunity for the Dance that was denied him this year.

Good for him. It might be enough to get me up to State College when Ohio State visits next season. I will be pulling for Penn State but also cheering for Abel. Last time I was up there for any type of game it was the NCAA men's vball championship game when Ohio State played yBu. I was going no matter who played but was a little disappointed I could not cheer for either team.

Honestly, Abel is a pretty ideal backup PG for nearly any program in the country.

Mature, hardworking, experienced, good at defense, solid passer, can knock down an open shot, good locker room guy, etc.

My understanding is he was going there for his graduate degree either way and basketball was a way for him to get it paid for. Looks like Ohio state liked him enough to give him one. Good for him

Ohio State typically recruits way better players than Abel Porter.

Honest question for someone who might know. I thought Abels back was so bad that his basketball career was over. Wasn’t this part of the narrative we were told during the season?

Good for him, but this is scary. If Abel can go to OSU with a schollie, that means that any of our players can go compost anywhere. If they take away the transfer penalty we won’t be able to hold on to any player that has some success.

Playing time matters to most. His leaving had little to do with basketball. And we will be improved at point guard next season anyway

I agree. Removing the one year transfer penalty will destroy mid major programs in both sports. The current more lenient transfer rules also disproportionately hurt mid majors. I'm all for player empowerment, but facts are facts.

I see transfers from large P-5 programs as well. I saw the Weber picked up a player from Florida. I do not see it as a disaster that others do.

They should keep the current transfer policy, and add to it a one year "sit out" period for any coach that leaves before the final year of his contract.

That makes way too much sense for the NCAA to do something like you suggest.

Players in the nba also sign contracts and stay with that specific team regardless of coaching changes (In fact the nba draft takes out choice more than anything the NCAA does). I thought players in the NCAA signed with that team regardless of coaching changes. Yeah they don’t get paid (that’s not the structure) but they do get free college, tons of benefits and get be treated a lot like mini celebrities. They are fine. If they don’t want to adhere to the transfer laws in that specific institution then they can go play in the city league.

Is he starting a PhD program there? A second Masters? Starting medical school? I was under the impression he had already wrapped up a Masters degree at USU. TBH, I have never heard of someone playing bball for a post-masters degree. I am sure it has happened before, but just because of timelines I suspect it is very rare.

Awesome for Abel. It will be a great opportunity to get another post bachelor degree from a really good school. He will also not have the burden of being the starting point guard at OSU. He will probably get 10-12 minutes as a back up PG. I appreciate everything he did here. This is the true definition of a student athlete. He is setting himself up to have a very successful/lucrative post collegiate career.

True, but a player who isn't good at a P5 school is a mystery. Sometimes they are stars at mid major programs, but sometimes they aren't. I was at Utah State when Brayden Bell was there. Many students were excited for him "because he played at Ohio State." There are no guarantees.

However the flip side of that is a player that is great for your program has a great year and all of a sudden has options from a bunch of P5 programs. It will be hard to keep them and in essence many mid majors will just be minor leagues for P5 schools.

The non-power conferences become the proving ground for players the big schools missed out on or need to fill roster spots with when their young players jump early for the NBA and the dumping ground for players they misjudged when recruiting. I have a feeling seeing a 4-year player from a non-power conference drafted to the NBA will be as rare as a bigfoot sighting.
