I'm sure the NCAA tournament is next. I'm seriously bummed, but it had to be done.

WAC Cancelled. It looks like the Big East is gonna tip off here in a minute. No word on cancellation there but they are about the only one that hasn't cancelled.

Did it? (Does it?) The NCAA couldn't use the rights money to test every team and member of every qualifying program to make sure they weren't positive, charter them to all the games, and make sure they were in a protected hotel or other location?aceofspadeskb wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 10:02 amI'm sure the NCAA tournament is next. I'm no expert on anything, but it seems there is a wide spectrum of options between play it as usual and scrap it altogether. Is an overabundance of caution the only responsible course of action?

I'm just curious, has anyone on here had their jobs or offices closed with this whole virus going around? I guess for me it's just crazy that all events and travel is being cancelled or restricted but yet me and my wife get up and go to a crowded office for work each day like normal..

President Trump canceled travel to Europe to limit the outbreak because the health officials traced the virus back to Europe from a recent outbreak.
New stat said average age of death in the US is 80 years old. I don't think most people that old are going to the NCAA tournament or any other tournament anyway.

Hospitals are still having a hard time getting test kits for people who actually need them. We do not have the resources to check every team at this point.OKAggie wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 10:12 amDid it? (Does it?) Well crap. Last week I felt like there was a 1% chance of the tournament being canceled. Now it’s basically a 99% chance. Thanks Sam and the Ags for giving us a taste of the Madness this year. Unfortunately it’s likely all we will get. I’m glad the tournament was last week so I could take my boys and enjoy it live. This is getting out of control.

Re: Big 10 Cancels Tournament
My thoughts exactly. We are left with the memory of the shot which is a great memory as the last one of him playing in Utah State navy, but I had really hoped to see it in the NCAA tournament after. I'm mad about this madness, and we're not talking March madness in the typical sense. We're talking March madness in the crazy sense.FL350Aggie wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 10:24 amWell crap. Re: Big 10 Cancels Tournament
This is all correct. And obviously it's nothing like we've seen before and we all need to take precautions especially around the elderly. But what's insane to me is that we're making all these extreme decisions to cancel major events and sports for safety reasons, but yet almost all jobs and classes at Universities are still running like normal. Like USU announced yesterday on social media that they're cancelling all social events on the weekend for virus fears, but yet they're still having students file in large groups for early morning lectures the next day?SLB wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 10:44 amWhat I have heard the tests are really good detecting it about 2 days after you got it which is a good amount of time before feeling ill from the recent virus.bluegrouse wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 10:23 amBut people may not know when they have it. Universities across the country are moving all classes to online and cancelling in-person classes. Murray schools here in the SL valley are canceling school starting today due to possible direct exposure. I expect more will follow. We’re just at the beginning of this thing.

So do the next best thing -- vigorously monitor symptoms, for example. The Jazz weren't allowed to leave the arena until they were tested, but the Thunder players and everyone else in the building was just sent home and given instructions to monitor symptoms.Dwigt wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 10:16 amHospitals are still having a hard time getting test kits for people who actually need them. I realize I'm flailing a little because I HATE to see the tournament cancelled and not to see this Aggie team play again. But I'm also not sure that cancellation of the whole thing is the only option. NBA had no choice -- it had a player (now two) test positive and dozens of players/refs exposed. But no NCAA player or coach on any team has tested positive (that I've seen reported, anyway -- happy to be corrected if I'm wrong).

Problem is you can spread the virus before you ever show symptoms. That video from Monday of Rudy Gobert jokingly touching all the microphones and the recorder after his press conference - he likely was already infected at that point.OKAggie wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 11:02 amSo do the next best thing -- vigorously monitor symptoms, for example. MEAC and MAAC are still showing on conference web sites that they are on. Seems senseless playing quarterfinal games when tomorrow and the next day aren't likely to be reasonable. Big Sky in Boise cancels, and yet these the eastern densely populated areas are still marching on.

There haven't been many deaths, so the death age is skewed as a result. Most of the deaths started in Seattle area nursing home. So, the US average age of death isn't representative right now. Checking someplace else with larger numbers, like China or Italy, would likely give a better indication of where that number really falls.SLB wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 10:16 am

Italy has had over 200 deaths. Per this article, "The national health institute said the average age of those who had died so far was 81, with the vast majority suffering underlying health problems. Just 28 per cent were women."

Re: Big 10 Cancels Tournament
I work for a large medical device/pharmaceutical manufacturer. This doesn't directly affect what we're producing, but I can promise you that my company is very, very serious about this. We've shut down all business travel across our ~50 facilities worldwide, even domestic. Any personal travel internationally requires a 14 day self-isolation period once home, and domestic travel is potentially similar, depending on the situation. Conferences, trainings, all stopped. Our vendors that visit our facilities are being pushed back to not visit, but if they need to then they also need to adhere to our travel/isolation policy as directed.SwaggieAggie wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 10:15 amI'm just curious, has anyone on here had their jobs or offices closed with this whole virus going around? I would not be surprised if all non-essential personnel (i.e. not directly involved with production) are directed to work from home (if possible). There are many discussions going around about how to protect our products. People using our products will die quickly without them, because they're lacking fully functioning organs. That also means it's a very vulnerable population. Our manufacturing all occurs in clean rooms (think medical bunny suits), but we're taking additional precautions, including acquiring industrial N95 masks, to ensure that everything stays good.
I can't speak to other companies, but it is not "like normal" around here. I expect the changes to continue going forward.

Interesting to see that with the increase in deaths, Italy stayed above 80. And results are similar in China, per this article https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/03/who ... c-factors/ :OKAggie wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 11:40 amReal Life Aggie wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 11:33 amThere haven't been many deaths, so the death age is skewed as a result. Checking someplace else with larger numbers, like China or Italy, would likely give a better indication of where that number really falls.SLB wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 10:16 am
President Trump canceled travel to Europe to limit the outbreak because the health officials traced the virus back to Europe from a recent outbreak.
New stat said average age of death in the US is 80 years old. I don't think most people that old are going to the NCAA tournament or any other tournament anyway.
Italy has had over 200 deaths. Per this article, "The national health institute said the average age of those who had died so far was 81, with the vast majority suffering underlying health problems. Just 28 per cent were women."
"The death toll skews old even more strongly. Overall, China CDC found, 2.3% of confirmed cases died. But the fatality rate was 14.8% in people 80 or older, likely reflecting the presence of other diseases, a weaker immune system, or simply worse overall health. By contrast, the fatality rate was 1.3% in 50-somethings, 0.4% in 40-somethings, and 0.2% in people 10 to 39."
The article is 9 days old, but with the quantity of deaths in China, this seems a very clear reflection of mortality we could expect.

Re: Big 10 Cancels Tournament
Hey why don't we crown ourselves national champions.aceofspadeskb wrote: ↑March 12th, 2020, 10:02 amI'm sure the NCAA tournament is next. I'm seriously bummed, but it had to be done.
This post is likely straight up poor sarcasm and cannot be taken seriously.
