Bairstow
Had a rough night for the most part but on rewatch was solid down the stretch.
His pass to set up Beans last layup was nice and he did a great job pulling up and avoiding the charge. Hope he gets more comfortable because I don’t think we’re going to see much of Porter going forward.

Re: Bairstow
I think Porter is done for this tournament and I'm a little worried about how Brito is going to feel tomorrow with that tailbone. He could barely sit down for the press conference. Looked like an old man sliding into a hot tub. He had adrenaline to pull him through tonight.
As for Bairstow I sure wish we would've developed him more through the season for this very reason. We need help and he's had little experience. Same goes for Anderson.

Re: Bairstow
Bairstow was a disaster. TOs. 4 fouls. Charging call. 5-second inbounds violation. Allowing his pocket to be picked for a basket. And zero points in 20 minutes. He pretty much did it all.

Re: Bairstow
Yup. Listening to both coach Hansen and Smith, he did pretty much do it all. They both gave him credit for making the 1-3-1 as effective as it was because of his length. And Smith pointed out how crucial his court vision and passing was on the last pass to Bean to put us up 5 and ice it. This is a New Mexico defense that forced turnovers from our seniors and PGs the past 2 years. The major difference being he's a true freshman that played sparingly all season.

Re: Bairstow
Bairstow is like a puppy. Full of energy and aggressiveness. Right now, sometimes it gets him in trouble but it also leads to timely plays.
He attacked the basket during the press a few times and made an aggressive, confident play in the final minute driving into the lane, drawing the defender and then passing to Brito for the icing layup. I like that fearlessness.

Re: Bairstow
If we just played him more during the season he would be a lot better now. I like him. There are minutes for him now and he needs to step up. He has abilities that no one else has on this team. How can you rewatch the game though?

Re: Bairstow
There were plenty of times that he could have got more playing time during the regular season. The game against Wyoming at home and San Jose State at home he did not play that much he should have been playing especially the San Jose State game the whole second half. He also should have played significant minutes at New Mexico in the second half. He has the skill-set he just is a little bit raw but I think that he can develop.

Re: Bairstow
Sitting in the arena we all saw both calls coming. I thought they were both good calls.

Re: Bairstow
I was really frustrated with the whole team on that 5 second trap he had at the top of the key. It didn’t seem like anyone was moving or coming to help him. The fact he didn’t dribble it makes me feel like the play was designed for him to pass it quick. No one got open but that’s where you need to take it into your own hand and move

You’d have to ask Ninja but I hear it is very similar to warming up a trombone.hipsterdoofus21 wrote:I don't want to know how one "warms up a tailbone".AggieFBObsession wrote: ↑March 6th, 2020, 6:41 amBrito will be fine. Once he's warmed up the tailbone won't be a problem.

The 5 second call under the basket didn't look like anyone got open either.Winning Team wrote: ↑March 6th, 2020, 11:26 amI was really frustrated with the whole team on that 5 second trap he had at the top of the key. Re: Bairstow
The thing I noticed most about Bairstow last night was how hard he was on himself. He immediately turned to coach after the 5 second closely guarded call and said that it was his fault for not realizing it. He then continued to mouth stuff to himself about how stupid he was and how much he was struggling. Coach Smith ran up and down the bench telling his guys to lift up the guys on the court. When Bairstow came off the court a short time later every single guy down the entire bench told him it was okay and that he was going to do great things.

Re: Bairstow
Smith said in the post game interview that the stat sheet won't show it but Bairstow had a great game and was critical for us with Merrill in foul trouble.

Re: Bairstow
I was confused by the 5-second closely guarded rule. It was eliminated a few years ago - but only when a player is dribbling. Just looked it up. The announcers barely mentioned it.

I like Bairstow a ton. He's humble and he cares.
I wish all struggling players looked humble and like they care.

Re: Bairstow
I noticed in the postgame, coach Smith went out of his way to specifically compliment Bairstow. I think Smith was trying to boost his confidence, as everyone watching saw that Bairstow was a disaster last night. That is a sign of a good coach.

Re: Bairstow
He had some bad turnovers, but in the last 5-6 minutes thought he played really well. He really needs confidence. You can tell he wants to be great and not make mistakes, but that is when you start to make more mistakes. He will continue to grow and be a solid player in the coming years.ThunderAggie wrote: ↑March 6th, 2020, 2:04 pmGreat post! Hats off to Coach Smith! Re: Bairstow
He made mistakes but down the stretch he was solid. He put in a lot of minutes with 4 fouls. The starts won't show it but he was a big part.
