Re: Recruiting
Phil Jackson could be coaching at BYU and I'd still not understand why someone would want to go there.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 22nd, 2020, 8:40 pmYou guys are all severely underestimating Pope. Yes, he can be whiny. But He is a heck of a basketball coach and a heckuva recruiter. I’ve heard that Haarms is in fact going to pick BYU.

Re: Recruiting
Thanks for sharing that perspective. I’ve seen Pope coach a couple of games at UVU and only saw a couple it BYU games this year and to an outsider he is one of the whiniest coaches I’ve ever seen. Refusing to shake multiple coaches’ hands after games is a douche move. I can’t see why someone would want to play at that school either way.gomretat wrote:I would be surprised if BYU is the landing spot but at the same time, Pope is a outstanding recruiter and he is very well connected. My son played for Pope and he is a great coach and a tremendous builder of young men off the court. He also has a very good staff at BYU. I am not even close to being a BYU fan and never will be but Pope is a formidable competitor. I actually think he and Smith have a lot in common and will both have a lot of opportunity to move into big programs. Flame away.ThunderAggie wrote: ↑April 21st, 2020, 8:38 pmYeah. Tis the reason I asked. I was a bit confused. If he was LDS it would make sense but since he is not idk how YBU is on his final 3.

Re: Recruiting
My detest for them aside, I understand why some would want to play there. They have flashes of greatness, some kids aren't looking for a party school, and even when they have off years, they still recruit and bounce back well. Plus, Mormons throughout the country cheer for them, so it's almost like you can find pockets of fans everywhere. And they schedule well so Haarms would be able to still get really good minutes against quality teams.dyedblue wrote: ↑April 23rd, 2020, 6:59 amThanks for sharing that perspective. However, I don't understand why he wouldn't choose a much better program like Kentucky. Maybe he doesn't want the volatility and turnover that's traditionally been seen in that program. Maybe he's more interested in the academics available at BYU.

Someone needs to inform Haarms that going Dutch in Provo is taboo. BYU coeds are not ok with splitting the bill.

From Jeff Borzello's twitter account:
Matt Haarms, the nation's top available transfer, has committed to BYU over Kentucky and Texas Tech. "I just felt an absolutely awesome connection with them," Haarms told ESPN. Immediately eligible. Averaged 8.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks last season at Purdue.

I have to wonder if this helps us. Arizona just landed a commitment from a different European big man. I have no idea how many spots they actually have now. Though it does seem like Gorener may be leaning towards Creighton.

Also interesting to note. New Mexico is losing another transfer. This kid was at Utah originally. It'll be his 3rd school in 3 years.

Nice pickup for one year, but the guy averaged just 8 points a game last year. He will make a difference for them but I’m not sure he replaces what they lost.ThunderAggie wrote: ↑April 23rd, 2020, 11:31 amHaha wonder how long he will lastReal Life Aggie wrote: ↑April 23rd, 2020, 11:21 amNot unless Matt Haarms is...ThunderAggie wrote: ↑April 23rd, 2020, 10:36 amPlease tell me you are trolling...aggies1 wrote: ↑April 23rd, 2020, 10:28 amFrom Jeff Borzello's twitter account:

I guess it's possible that we may have our eyes on someone who at the moment is not classified as immediately eligible, but are hoping the May 20 ruling will open up an additional pool of players that could help us immediately.

Re: Recruiting
We share the same disdain for BYU athletics (and I live in Utah County which is painful). I have not seen Pope as whiny but that may be because of how close I was to the situation. As for not shaking hands, there is no excuse for that unless there is a lot going on behind the scenes we dont know about. Shame on him. He is an outstanding coach and a great man off the court. I watched him do a lot for a lot of players that went way beyond basketball.dyedblue wrote: ↑April 23rd, 2020, 6:59 amThanks for sharing that perspective. I got flamed for saying it at the time but I wish we would have hired Burgess when he interviewed for an assistant position with Smith. He is a tremendous big man coach and at the time I think he would have come to Logan. I am not sure he is the head coach type but a great assistant.

Re: Recruiting
So has the better frontcourt BYU or USU for next year? Queta, John, Kuba, Trevin and Bean, Anderson, Liam vs. Haarms, Kolby Lee, Harward and Baxter, Lowell. I still think we are better but I could be biased.
Re: Recruiting
I agree slcagg, USU will have the better frontcourt. I would take Queta, Bean and Anderson over any three of byu's.
