How do you give up 40 points in 8:13?
How do you give up 40 points in 8:13?
I’m only going to make one post about this epic disaster and then I need to think about something else.
But I’ll point out that Boise State went from 48 points at 3:36 left in the second half to 88 points with 0:23 left in overtime. During that stretch (8:13), USU made exactly zero field goals.
I wonder if a team has ever scored 40 points while the opponent scored zero field goals in the history of D1 basketball.

Didn't we go on a 37-0 run against Idaho one year? GFA will have to confirm.

Hey OP, I’m looking at the play play on ESPN and it looks like it’s saying something different.
Did you double check on ESPN? I might be reading it wrong.

You take your foot off the gas pedal and stop playing Belarus you feel like you have won the game. At the same time your opponent put in some backups that played with passion and fire and believed they could win, and they did.

Never mind. I was wrong.
The numbers OP mentioned are accurate.
That’s a lot of points really fast.

Queta fouled out at 3:36 when the score was 66-48. Boise State went up 88-81 with 0:23 left in overtime. That’s 40 points in 8:13. The Aggies’ 15 points all came on free throws.Former_USU_Alumni wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 12:33 amHey OP, I’m looking at the play play on ESPN and it looks like it’s saying something different.

The field goal drought actually lasted over a 10:20 period while BSU scores 42 points.

The thing that baffles me - beyond the complete offensive ineptitude:
How do you allow a freshman that had scored a total of 18 points for the year coming in to the game, score 19 points in 3:37 to close the game out? Seriously?

Sorry, you were right.
I should have double checked before I said something.
Aggies are pretty bad at controlling the game. All they had to do was hold the ball (every possession) until the shot clock ran out to win the game.

Re: How do you give up 40 points in 8:13?
Brito had three turnovers in 16 seconds as the second half was coming to a close. After throwing the ball to Boise State to let them tie the game, just two seconds later he threw the ball to an open Boise State player for an half court shot that could have won it in regulation.

The title of the OP will be the title of many offseason coaching videos.
Brito's two handed chest pass for the game tying layup was technically a thing of beauty. John Wooden would be proud. Oh, wait...

The clock does not start until somebody touches it but it would have been better off just throwing along Court pass to the other side of the Court even if they steal it they probably wouldn't have enough time to get off a very good shot and the game is over.freakboy wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 7:47 amHe could have just hurled the ball up in the air and the game would have ended before it landed.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 7:43 amThe title of the OP will be the title of many offseason coaching videos.

I think I was confusing the bounce pass that hit the baseline with the play in question.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 8:01 amThe clock does not start until somebody touches it but it would have been better off just throwing along Court pass to the other side of the Court even if they steal it they probably wouldn't have enough time to get off a very good shot and the game is over.freakboy wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 7:47 amHe could have just hurled the ball up in the air and the game would have ended before it landed.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 7:43 amThe title of the OP will be the title of many offseason coaching videos.

Which was worse? Brock Miller 2 on 1 fast break, up double digits needing to protect the lead with under three minutes or Brayden Bell shooting the ball backward?hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 7:47 amThat 2 on 1 fast break by Miller was poetry in motion.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 7:43 amThe title of the OP will be the title of many offseason coaching videos.

Re: How do you give up 40 points in 8:13?
Once Smith had the boys start playing not to lose rather than continue playing to win the decline began and quickly picked up steam. There is absolutely no reason to change the game plan at about the 8 minute mark from what had been working well the entire game. If we would have just kept playing our game, even with the few ill advised plays near the end, we would have won handily. This one is on coach 100%.
Re: How do you give up 40 points in 8:13?
That makes me sick! No matter what your expectations are, no matter how good they are, no matter how poorly you play that should never, never, ever happen.

That is true, but that was with 15 seconds left after BSU had already scored their 40 points over 8:13. The last of the 40 points were scored with 23 seconds remaining.Elkaggie wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 9:01 amNot that it matters but I’m pretty sure Abel got a put back off a rebound it OT.dogie wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 12:47 amQueta fouled out at 3:36 when the score was 66-48. Re: How do you give up 40 points in 8:13?
This is just a question. When BSU made a three point shot with four seconds to go, did the clock stop on the made basket? If so, is there a rule that the clock stops on made baskets in the final two minutes or something? It normally doesn’t.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 8:01 amThe clock does not start until somebody touches it but it would have been better off just throwing along Court pass to the other side of the Court even if they steal it they probably wouldn't have enough time to get off a very good shot and the game is over.freakboy wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 7:47 amHe could have just hurled the ball up in the air and the game would have ended before it landed.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑January 19th, 2020, 7:43 amThe title of the OP will be the title of many offseason coaching videos.

BSU had no timeouts left at that point. Could Brito have just held the ball out of bounds for four seconds to end the game?
Also, it isn’t like BSU played perfect basketball in the final minute. The Aggies took a four-point lead at 0:26. BSU would still go on to commit two more turnovers and USU would shoot 4-for-4 from the line, yet the choke was so complete that not even that was enough to avoid losing.

The clock stops on a made basket in the second half under 1 minute in college basketball. Under 2 minutes in the NBA.

Re: How do you give up 40 points in 8:13?
This is my take as well. I thought it started a couple of minutes later around the six minute mark. We did the same (I can't express myself without swearing) against Nevada and got away with it. Games are 40 minutes long. Step on their necks.Aggie-Man wrote:Once Smith had the boys start playing not to lose rather than continue playing to win the decline began and quickly picked up steam.
