If Merrill averages 21 ppg over the next 7 games, he will eclipse the 2,000 career point total 55 years to-the-day that it was also accomplished by Wayne Estes.
Merrill Tracker:
Merrill is...34 points from Cornell Green
44 points from Brian Jackson
145 points from Wayne Estes
271 points from Greg Grant
...with a minimum 13 games remaining.
He would have to average 33 ppg in the remaining games, including leading us to the National Championship game in order to surpass Jaycee Carroll

Also:
In Assists he is 16 behind Kevin Nixon for #2 all-time
In Steals he is 9th all time and only 14 behind Reid Newey for 6th; which is probable.
He is the #1 Aggie of all-time in FT % at 88.7%
He is in the top 10 in several other categories.

Aggie Legend.

Pretty good to finish that close to Jaycee considering the amount of assists he’ll end up with and he spent two years with Duryea as the HC.

A little bit of diarrhea can't stop Sam.

I mean, he served a mission in Nicaragua, so you know he's no stranger to it.

That and Jaycee came out firing right from game 1 his freshman year. With no idea if the stats my guess would be that Sams freshman year is where he lost ground on Jaycee. I believe you are correct in that the HC his sophomore year did not help either and neither did having the next Jaycee Carol, Koby McEwen making a lot of points as well.

So what is the most probable outcome for point totals all time for Merrill? Say he were to average 17 points (around his season average) for the remaining regular season games, and then add in 2 games in the conference tourney and 2 more games for a future tourney. (NCAA tourney, NIT, CIT) Where would that put him all time in points?

If we made it to the MWC championship game and 1 post season tournament game with him averaging 17 ppg along the way in those remaining 16 games, Sam would pass Greg Grant by 1 point to become the 2nd highest point scorer in Utah State history.

This is so cool to see him listed among the names of Aggie hoops royalty. I couldn't happen to a better dude and the awesome thing about him is, he's WANTED to wear Aggie blue and white from birth.

That what makes him so special is his passion for the aggies and that he has been an aggie all his life.

You know, this achievement is all the more remarkable because he's always been an Aggie. I don't know if that's been taken into consideration here.

Side note:
I am grateful to have seen Estes play. He scored 2001 points in less that 3 years, AND playing fewer games per year that are played now. I also love the love given Sam and Jaycee as we mention them in the same sentence as Wayne.
Every time Sam makes a spectacular play (which is of course often) I can see my old friend John smile. The proudest papa of them all.
