Keys to winning the LSU game
I have not watched LSU at all this year and was wondering what the keys to the game are?
I saw something that said they have turned the ball over a lot as they lost their main guard from last year. Hopefully we can counter and get fast break points. Our defense has looked really solid lately so hopefully that gives us a big advantage!
Thoughts?

Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
is LSU a 3 point shooting team? we seem to let teams shoot the 3, granted we played lower level competition so that can be an effective defense.

Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
One big thing will be to make Mayes try to beat us by himself. Against VCU he took the last 4 possessions single handedly, didn't pass once, and they went from tied to losing. There's some ego to be exploited there.
Wade is a good coach, but star mentality has been a thorn in their side since he got in. Team play > individual play should win out.

One interesting note about LSU is that Nelson Hernandez (former USU Video Coordinator) is LSU's Director of Basketball Operations. Nelson also graduated from USU.

Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
They are an athletic team. We may have the height advantage, but boxing out will be huge. Skylar Mays is a great all around player, very similar to Sam. Going to need the open 3’s to fall. Abel and Brock make us very hard to beat if they hit open looks

Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
Gotta keep Merrill out of foul trouble and play our team game. If we start trying to force things one-on-one we're going to have problems.

Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
I'd like to see Merrill draw some fouls in this game. None of them are big enough to straight up block Merrill if he decides to drive, and he's gotten really good at drawing the foul going to the hoop. Get a starter or two in foul trouble and these guys are toast.
Sidenote: I'm super excited to finally play a high-profile team, should be a lot of fun

Looking at that stat line, Mays sounds like a very impressive player. However, I first thought the steals were per game, and I started having near-debilitating flashbacks of Matisse Thybulle and just about fell off my chair.

Are those total assist numbers as well? Or per game?Real Life Aggie wrote: ↑November 19th, 2019, 2:31 pmLooking at that stat line, Mays sounds like a very impressive player. Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
assists, turnovers, blocks, steals are done by totals on everybody's website. It's weird, I know, but there you are.flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑November 19th, 2019, 2:32 pmAre those total assist numbers as well? Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
So they're only getting ~10 assists per game... Sounds like this team might look like last year's Nevada.

Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
Merrill's ability to draw fouls on his drives has gone down quite a bit, in my observation. He is only getting a foul call on about one in 6 or 7 drives to the hoop in which he falls to the floor. He falls to the floor on about 19 of 20 drives to the hoop.flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑November 19th, 2019, 2:30 pmI'd like to see Merrill draw some fouls in this game. Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
Good to know. I just remember the game in Logan it seemed like one of the bun brothers was going to hold on to the ball for twenty seconds then take a shot. Nevada had 8 assists in that game, I just looked it up to avoid any more slander. Sorry for the generalization.

Your just jelus that he has the booty to pull that off without getting hurt.Yossarian wrote: ↑November 19th, 2019, 3:20 pmMerrill's ability to draw fouls on his drives has gone down quite a bit, in my observation. Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
Generalizations are fine. I think if you are looking for a better comparison to how LSU plays the 2017/18 Pack team might be a better example. They essentially played a 5 guard lineup of mostly 6'5/6 guys..flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑November 19th, 2019, 4:51 pmGood to know. Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
They have 3/6 players that shoot over 50% from the field. They seem to be very good with the shots they take. I did notice their tallest player at 6’9” averages 5 TOs per game.
We should be using our post players a lot in this game. After Kuba’s last performance, I have some hope we can be successful getting the ball into the post and scoring. I loved seeing the pick and roll plays and lobs to Kuba last night. We can do more of those pretty effectively.

Re: Keys to winning the LSU game
In my opinion that is because he hasn’t really needed to. He seems to thrive in close games and when the team is in a pinch.Yossarian wrote: ↑November 19th, 2019, 3:20 pmMerrill's ability to draw fouls on his drives has gone down quite a bit, in my observation.
