Re: Cowbell
I didn't mind the offbeat so much. But to me it seemed like he was just a hair too quick on the beat a couple of times. Felt like he was passive aggressively trying to make the band play quicker.

Re: Cowbell
The great Bruce Dickenson puts his pants on one leg at a time, and you're gonna want more cowbell.

Re: Cowbell
Not sure how often but they have had random students playing the cowbell a time or two. Not one of the percussionists from the band. Might explain the off beatedness

Re: Cowbell
Usually whoever is playing the cowbell is whatever drummer is lowest on the totem pole and/or not playing the drum set at the time. I don’t think they let anyone else play cowbell, or at least they didn’t when I played in the pep band.
There’s an old joke that explains all this... How do you know a percussionist is at your door? The knocking speeds up. Keep in mind that most jokes and stereotypes about musicians are completely true.
It’s a normal thing with young percussionists who are still in school... don’t worry, they’re all taking lessons and will get better eventually...

Re: Cowbell
I remember there was a "sweet spirit" who used to do the cowbell. She would get really into it. Like, really into it. On one hand it was one of the least cool or attractive things I’ve ever seen. On the other hand who the fetch cares what I think- she was having a good time.

Re: Cowbell
It's the cowbell. Pretty sure you either have a sense of rhythm or you don't. Not sure it can be taught. The forecast says the chance of improvement is extremely low.trombone_ninja wrote: ↑November 19th, 2019, 5:49 pmIt’s a normal thing with young percussionists who are still in school... don’t worry, they’re all taking lessons and will get better eventually...

Re: Cowbell
I can say from experience on both sides that it absolutely can be taught. Another thing that can be taught is the coordination required to actually hit the thing precisely in time with that sense of rhythm, which isn’t as easy as it sounds, something else I’ve learned from experienceChicAggie wrote: ↑November 20th, 2019, 8:44 amIt's the cowbell. Re: Cowbell
I was a percussionist in junior high and high school. My experience was different. It takes the most minimal amount of coordination to hit a drum stick against a cowbell. If you need to learn that, you probably shouldn't be a percussionist. I suppose it is possible to "learn" rhythm, but most people seem to either have rhythm or not. Just check out the dance floor at any wedding. Some people have it, and some don't.trombone_ninja wrote: ↑November 20th, 2019, 5:58 pmI can say from experience on both sides that it absolutely can be taught. Re: Cowbell
It sounds like there is a thing as too much cowbell. Even the great Bruce Dickinson had too much.

Re: Cowbell
False. Only Christopher Walken had too much cowbell. I refuse to acknowledge that the great Bruce Dickinson was able to sate his need for more cowbell.frankiesaysrelax wrote: ↑November 22nd, 2019, 11:15 amIt sounds like there is a thing as too much cowbell.
