MWC

Post by SLB » November 15th, 2019, 1:02 pm

The conference looks pretty tough this year.
San Diego State and New Mexico are currently unbeaten.
San Diego State beat BYU in Provo.
New Mexico have scored more than 90 in every game this season.
UNLV look pretty good.
Nevada is decent.
San Jose State, Air Force, and Wyoming are still bad.
It is hard to say about the others.

I agree. I think we will have some competition for top spot. SDSU and NM have some great transfers and competent coaches. Nevada lost a lot and are probably another year away but Alford is a competitive guy. It’s also just a matter of time before Otzelburger has UNLV toward the top of the conference. He and Coach Smith’s former teams had some epic battles back in South Dakota.

UNLV took both their last two games against KSU and Cal (or something) to overtime before dropping them. They'll be tough this year.

Right now it appears that New Mexico and SDSU are very good. Time will tell the rest of the story, but I think the coaching at Boise is dragging them down. And the rest of the conference is average at best.

I think Rice is an excellent coach. Boise has been a very consistent winner since joining the MW. It is hard to win big every year in most conferences.

It is also impossible to tell much about any of the teams this early in the ooc.

I think he is probably more referring to Duryea.

Regarding Boise, Akot was denied eligibility for this year.

That always bugs me. They aren't available for OOC, then improve come conference time.

I don't think too highly of either as coaches at this level.

Why?

I thought the goal for 99 percent of the teams out there is to improve by conference time.

I guess you are worried that the MW being down will hurt your seed in the Dance. It probably will but it is not the responsibility of other MW schools to get USU a better seed. You need to do this by yourself and you can with a great ooc record.

I can't predict the future but in observing my own team, I feel pretty safe predicting they will be much better by conference time then they are now. The Pack has 4 youngsters who have just played their 1st D-1 games. On the plus side, they are all getting double figure minutes every night against a fairly tough ooc schedule. They are getting tested and that is a good thing.

How that plays out on how well they will do in conference is unknowable at this time.

USU is getting some good run for your newbies too..That should pay dividends down the road.
