Blessing in Disguise
Thoughts?
I think we have a lot of potential but lack some athleticism. We need guys other than Sam to step up. Sam continues to find ways to score, getting to the free throw line TONS! Our posts are good at rebounding and blocking shots, but barely contributed on offense. This is why we NEED Queta as soon as possible! I feel this may be a blessing in disguise. I think the boys will learn not to listen to the hype and any team can beat them on any given night. I project we come out firing next game.

Re: Blessing in Disguise
I agree. Better to get challenged than just coast. Thought Anderson was the difference tonight. Calm, cool, and collected.
Blessing in Disguise
Anderson was very clutch tonight, he is going to be a vital piece.
They better get used to having a bullseye on their back.
Hopefully Kuba and Dorius never have to take a critical foul shots. Those 2 are bricklayers from the line, but they defend and rebound well.

Re: Blessing in Disguise
I will agree that we didn’t get any offensive production from our post players but I can’t think of one time that I saw a post entry pass. I can only think of Kuba getting a bad low pass to his knees and it was stripped as he was trying to bring it up. His other shot was a rebound with the shot clock really low and he forced up a quick hook shot.
I don’t think it’s fair to say they suck at offense when we don’t even try to utilize them. Granted they may know something from practice we don’t but the reports we’ve heard was that Kuba was pretty good on offense. We only used him for setting picks on offense though.
What we saw last night on offense was not much different than Duryea days but with some better players. If we don’t utilize our post players, our offense will become stagnant. It shouldn’t be hard to have a 7’2” guy post up and feed him the ball. Even if passes back out, it forces the defense to pull in and allows the offense breathing room.
Last night, the picking defender doubled the man with the ball and blocked passing lanes and drives. There was nothing to stop a pick and roll though. We used it once with Dorius early in the game but never went back to it. If all we are doing is dribbling perpendicular to the basket out on the arc and never getting passes inside then a lot of games will look like last night or worse.
I do think though that a slow start was going to happen. New guys. New 3pt line. A lot of adjustment to A free flowing offense where people need to know and trust that everyone is where they are supposed to be. I think they’ll see what was happening last night and we will see the adjustments on Friday.
It does show though that teams are going to come out firing and if the game is close that will only drive them more to give us everything they’ve got. The bullseye thing is real. The #17 next to our name is a curse.

Re: Blessing in Disguise
We aren't going to surprise anyone this year. I'm sure that affects the play of our guys early on. I feel that it will stabilize a bit after a few games. The new guys probably haven't played in front of so many fans either. That was a really good student crowd for the first game. I'm not going to get too uptight about a win.

IMO Alphonso does not look like he's 35. He's definitely the biggest and strongest player on the team. He's very composed and acts mature. Maybe that's what makes you think he looks like he's 35. Maybe he could pass for 25. I LOVE Anderson's game. He is calm, collected, and clutch. Without him we would have lost the game last night. It seemed like he did just about everything right last night. I look forward to watching him play and develop under Captain Smith. When we play BYU I think he is the man to guard Yolei Childs.

Re: Blessing in Disguise
Anderson had a couple defensive let downs last night, but overall he did very well for his first game in an Aggie Uniform. He has great form on his shot and free throws. Reminded me of one of my all time favorites, Chaz Spicer calmly walking up there and knocking down free throws to seal the game.

Re: Blessing in Disguise
I tell ya, Anderson is as cool as the original Fonzie. Question is who on this team are Potsie, Ralph, and Richie?
Re: Blessing in Disguise
These were my thoughts exactly. So many times they could have gone to the post to Kuba and just ignored it. Loosening up the D with a post up and dish could have created many open outside looks. MSU did not have to worry about it at all.scotlandog wrote: ↑November 6th, 2019, 8:22 amI will agree that we didn’t get any offensive production from our post players but I can’t think of one time that I saw a post entry pass. GO AGGIES! GO AGGIES! HEY! HEY! HEY!
Re: Blessing in Disguise
Especially because he had to deal with one fan in the student section letting out a scream about 1/2 second before each of Anderson’s eight consecutive free throws down the stretch. Did anyone else notice that? And then someone turned off the lights as he was sizing up one of those shots.

Funny, but you can trace your mistake back to this 2017 article. It's become a common misconception.

Re: Blessing in Disguise
I think we saw how important it is for this offense to have touches in the paint and the threat of the post scoring. Against Weber, we saw a lot more focus out of the gate to get the post players involved. Kuba and Dorius aren’t elite offensive post players but it pulls the defense in. When the defense pulls in, we have adjustments by the defense that we can begin to exploit.scotlandog wrote:I will agree that we didn’t get any offensive production from our post players but I can’t think of one time that I saw a post entry pass. When they have to start reacting to the things we are doing, we can stay a step ahead of them. It opens everything up. If we just pass outside on the perimeter, the defense is not being forced to change or adjust and they start pressing passing lanes without fear and heavily contest shots from distance.
When the guard is looking inside, the defensive player now needs to worry about the post entry pass and passes to other wings. They can’t cover everything at the same time. Also, passes into and out of the post causes real problems for defenses, the same as a skip pass.
If we focus on getting the post involved in our offense, I think we’ll see more Weber like game instead of Montana St type games.
