Long overdue: Aggie-A internet-connected device on KickStarter

This has been a LONG time coming, almost 2 year because I haven't had as much time to spend on it as I would like, but we finally got the provisional patent filed and a decent prototype working.

With USU's success in football and basketball this year, it seems like a perfect time to launch our KickStarter. Please share with any of your Aggie friends and family. Hopefully I can get this funded and make it worth my time to make it a regular product.

Also, spread the word to your Aggie friends and family!

Hmm, not sure about that design. I don't need exhibitionists trying to "true Agge" themselves on my own personal A table.

(kidding - nice job)

It is wireless communications, but with how bright those LEDs are (or can be), I wasn't planning on having it run on batteries. They would run out too quickly. It will come with a wall adapter or can be powered via a USB cable from a computer.

You set it up kindof like a Roku or Amazon Echo. The first time you use it, it shows up as its own wireless router. You connect to it and then supply your wireless access point and wireless password/key. Then it will connect up to that access point.

If I have time, I will make an Apple and Android app to make the onboarding process easier.

I assume you’ll ship to DPO/APO? It works just like a US address, same cost, but requires a customs label through usps. If so, I’ll buy one for sure!

If I may make a suggestion, it would be cool if there were some type of digital readout that told what the score was and for what sport. I see the A blue sometimes and i don't know which sport it was that won. It would probably be hard to incorporate but that would be awesome.

It wouldn’t be hard, but it would drive cost up and we did consider it. The cheapest small LCD we saw was around $6-10 in quantities of 100, include extra circuitry, and which would increase the parts cost by about 50%. Those screens were also only about 1.3-1.5 in diagonal.

If thus was a huge run of 1000+, we could definitely budget it in, but thought that a price point of close to $50 was too high for Kickstarter where it looks like getting a hundred will be the max we will see.

The patent we filed was for general sports memorabilia internet of things to enhance the fan experience. It has a lot of elements in there about letting the team/player interact more directly with the fan, and a visual readout is part of it. One of our examples/potential embodiments was something like a model of Fenway Park with the scoreboard embedded in the Green Monster and lights to show the current at bat.

That Fenway idea is going to make you some money.

I'm in for this one. If you can get a Wrigley one with a white flag and the team flags you will be a very rich man.

Just pledged and shared. If you’d like more product ideas, I would like a version of this that is like a night light that plugs directly into an outlet.

i have a question, more just a thought i just had, if you use the internet to track the scores can you update it to show the opposing teams colors if they are winning and the aggie colors if they are winning? it probably doesn't make sense but it was just a thought.

That on would be a little harder because of the electrical certification process required by the university licensing department. In the current device, I can satisfy their requirement by buying the wall power plug that is UL verified. I think that if I were to incorporate the power adapter into my device itself, it would require all my electronics to go through the UL certification process, which can be quite pricy.

The current web interface does allow some control over colors, but not this. As of right now, the score processing does not take place on the device itself. This is because we are getting the scores from One if the major sports websites. They anyone’s change how the website is organized and we don’t want the Kickstarter device to stop working if they change their website. So instead, we have another server processing the scores and then providing a simplified interface to the Kickstarter devices. Currently, it only reports win/loss from the server to the devices for a variety of sports and then the user can decide which sports will trigger the device turning blue. We could expand this to include in-game scores and opponents identification

We also plan to have an online upgrade method (like your wireless router) to allow firmware upgrades for new features.

Once we get the licensing agreement with USU done (through IMG College Licensing), we will add a pre-order button to the Kickstarter page that will redirect to our website. We are definitely going to finish all the Kickstarter pledges before we start working on the later ones.

I think I am about 1.5-2.0 weeks away from sending the sample in to IMG College Licensing to finish the licensing request. I am also going to do a time-lapse video of the print and electronics fabrication while preparing the final prototype to post to the Kickstarter page. I am posting updates both here at viewtopic.php?f=7&t=38644&start=105 and on the Kickstarter page.
