Martin/Merrill charge call

Post by jimbo » March 6th, 2019, 6:05 pm

A lot of people seem to think that Merrill flopped on the charge call when Martin incredibly dunked over him. You can argue the merits of the charge call and whether or not it should have been a foul, but he certainly didn't flop.

Here are some photos going around that claim it was a flop:

These photos neglect to show the contact causing Merrill to fall backward - a nice knee to the chest:

You can also see his head snap back a bit at the point of contact:

Again, you could argue that it was an appropriate charge call, but it most certainly wasn't a flop.

As I understand the rule the defender needs to be in place before the offensive player leaves the ground. Based on the second photo of the second set of photos Merrill was set and it was the right call. It is hard to tell when watching the video at full speed.

Picking this one has been annoying to cry about a call. Bad calls all night but I think this one was good.

Before the offensive player (with the ball) becomes airborne, the defender must have two feet on the floor, be facing the opponent and be stationary to draw a charge. Otherwise, it should be a blocking foul.

Good pictures.

People in general just seem to want the dunk to stand because its "fun". Reading the comments on that tweet is... painful.

The funniest was the Jazz Johnson flop that nothing was called on. The USU player didn't even get close.

Why the hell is this still being brought up? Because we won? More excuses? There are flops in every freaking game in the country. Give it a rest already.

The charge call was correct, but man that was one heck of dunk by Martin.
