People say we don’t have any shooters

Post by troutputz » January 20th, 2022, 12:05 am

Why then did we beat a good Oklahoma team?
Why then did we shoot so well and kill New Mexico State?
Why then did we shoot the lights out against Weber State at the Purple Dee burger, traditionally a hard place to win?

What’s made these guys terrible shooters now as compared to back then? I know there is that word inconsistency, but really, from shooting lights out to terrible shooters! Mental? Is Rich Gordon retired? He used to be our team shrink and he was very good at what he did! Do we have a team shrink still, and who might that be?

There definitely are shooters on this team, or at least there was. It seems like they hold onto bad performances. Free throw percentage was fine until they played YBU, since then it’s been bad. They used to be a a top 25 three point shooting team, then Air Force happened. We know how it’s been going since.

Maybe they do have the yips as suggested in another thread. Hopefully shots start falling against Boise tonight.

I think there is enough of a sample size that we have been scouted.

This would have legs but it’s wide open 3’s that we are missing. It’s the extra pass to a wide open guy within the offense that we are missing. We are not forcing shots generally.

Our three-point shooting statistics would argue that we can't shoot well. Collectively and individually.

So they don’t have confidence then? Or lost it? Why is that? Why can’t we get it back?

I have no idea. I’m starting to wonder if there are locker room issues.

We play five out with iso dribbling. It works great when we can get past our guy but that is rare. We don’t even seem to move or cut to help someone that picked up their dribble under the hoop. If this is the offense then Odom won’t last long.

Perhaps they all have ugly girlfriends. Ugly girlfriend = no confidence. :noidea:

They need to talk to Mark Grace about how to use the services of a "slump buster".

This is what I see too. We have all 5 guys spaced out around the arc and the offense will begin by passing it around the outside until someone eventually will try to go 1v1 on their man. Sometimes they make it a few steps and pass it off and the next guy tries to break down his guy 1v1 and other times we'll make it all the way into the lane before the help defense comes and then we pick up our dribble and pass it back out to the perimeter where the whole hot potato act starts again. Other than the occasional screen out top to try and help the dribbler beat his guy 1v1 there seems to be no plan on offense at all.

Early in the year we were passing the ball all over the court and both the ball and players were in constant motion which created scoring opportunities everywhere. Now, the ball just sticks for long periods while everyone else stands and watches. It's like we are taking a break and gathering our breath on the offensive side of the court.

If Rich Gordon is the guy I am thinking about, he was awesome! I had him in an undergrad class and I got the feeling he is the kind of guy you could sit and talk to for hours.

It seems Jones & Falslev picked Odom over Craig Smith so that is good.

In the pros, every year there are players several teams pass on who get picked late and become great players. Early picks sometimes flop. Great recruiting can make all the difference, but unless you are a blue blood program, that can regularly attract the interest of multiple high profile recruits, it is rare for a program to consistently sign multiple great players that pan out. Definitely some luck involved. Can this staff land 1-2 key difference makers and a few complimentary pieces? TBD
