Breaking Down the Recruiting Class

Post by USU78 » January 4th, 2011, 2:43 pm

Here we are, broken down by position (LOI if noted; otherwise verbal):

Offense:

Line: Albrecht, Austin (6'6 260 _._ OL, Alta HS, UT); Hicks, Jordan (6'5 280 5.4 OL, Brighton HS, UT); Tenney, Stetson (6'5 295 _._ OL, Show Low HS, AZ, E Arizona CC, AZ) Signed! Midyear!

With Tenney coming in midyear and a great big hole at LT, looks like GA thinks we're in pretty good shape for next season with just the one JC so far.

Backs: Keeton, Chuckie (6'2 184 4.5 QB/Ath, Cy City HS, TX); Kennedy, Adam (6'5 210 _._ QB, Stockton HS, CA, San Joaquin Delta CC, CA) Signed! Midyear!

Note the QB signings/commits, but lack of WR and TE and RB signings/commits. This tells us something about the state of our talent, even last season with the injuries, and where our offense was lacking.

Defense:

Line: Hautau, Ofa (6'2 270 _._ DL, East HS, UT); Lapuaho, Al (6'3 295 _._ DT, Granger HS, UT, Snow JC, UT); Orth, Corey (6'5 235 4.85 DE, Buena Vista HS, CO, E Arizona CC, AZ) Signed! Midyear!; Palepoi, Denny (6'2 310 _._ DT, Skyline HS, UT, Snow JC, UT) (w/o?); ; Whimpey, Kevin (6'6 265 _._ DE, Lone Peak HS, UT, Idaho State, ID) (midyear RM enrollee?); Whimpey, Kyle (6'7325 _._ DT, Lone Peak HS, UT, Idaho State, ID) (midyear RM enrollee?)

Long and solid and numerous (5) at Tackle -- and remember Evan's already on campus per transfer rules -- ; long and quick enough at one DE, who's coming next week, and possibly another.

Linebackers: Keller, Derek (6'3 215 _._ LB, Alta HS, UT) (w/o?)

Looks like coaches are satisfied with the starters and depth. I myself would like another inside guy, especially after watching the Penn State and TCU LBs in action last week.

Backs: Alston, Terrance (5'10 175 _.) CB/PR, Vanden HS, CA, Solano CC, CA) Signed! Midyear!;
Jackson, LaDale (5'11 160 4.45 DB, Silverado HS, NV); Peck, Bridger (6'2 205 4.51 DB/LB, Bingham HS, UT)

I'm guessing we'll see another JC or 2 at DB with what we're losing. We shall see.

I saw the Sporting News recruiting issue yesterday. I think they had Lapuaho as the 22nd overall JC guy. The bio there listed his commit as Washington St but, the school lists further back had him committed to us instead. I hope we still get him.

Does anyone know anything about Palepoi? It doesn't look like he played this year.

From this year, I think where we need most help is O and D line. Looks like that is being addressed.

According to Tony Jones, the Whimpey brothers will be on campus this weekend. Just coming off missions. Kevin a 6'6" 265 lb DE, and Kyle a 6'7" 325 lb OL. Played HS ball at Lone Peak and signed with Idaho State out of HS. We've offered.

Preferred walkons, maybe?

Very doubtful they'll walk-on anywhere. Apparently a 2 year hiatus is making them a hot commodity. They supposedly are garnering a lot more recruiting attention now than they did before their missions.

Did they grow? Sometimes a couple of inches acquired between 19 and 21 makes a big difference.

Who are we competing against? BYU and Utah? These could be some great additions.

My guess would have been this: that they are not castoffs, but rather enterprising young men that realized that after having put on 50 lbs each, they might command a different level of interest after the mission.

But as SoCalAggie reminded us with his tagline on the other board: "I may be wrong"

I hope they can indeed make an immediate impact. Bengal fans seemed to think these boys would land higher than USU. I had also heard they were receiving some MWC interest. Hopefully they'll be good additions.

Andersen and staff are recruiting well; however I'd like to see more emphasis on HS recruits rather than JUCO. You must have strong HS recruits for a long term positive program. Cam Newton's come once in a lifetime.

I saw a blog entry from one of their mission campanions.
He said I have a new companion that is no Wimpey missionary and then
went on to say that he had brought a full set of weights
with him on his mission. That would be one heavy backpack.

These two brothers are HS recruits. Ones a red-shirt freshmen the other a sophmore.

This latest "GA could sell" trend and the recent Scott Barnes thread makes me think we need to start another Robert Turbin thread. We haven't had one on this board yet, have we?
