I can't stand Utah and am enjoying them struggling this year but I sure hope they beat BYU on Saturday and bring them back to earth.

Yes. Rumors are USU had something to do with the coach in waiting title being papered. USU was "allegedly" sniffing around Scalley and this prompted Utah's hand.

we had to get revenge somehow for Utah tipping off the MWC off about the project. Us sniffing around LS was how we decided to do that

If that's the case, I would say utah has more coming their way. We aren't close to being even.

Whittingham may retire soon. He has been the head coach at Utah for almost 20 years, and Whittingham started his coaching 1985.

Agreed. But it was their idiotic decision (to turn down
ESPNs contract offer) that ultimately to the dissolution of the PAC12 which opened things up for us. So that's a minor victory.

Does he qualify as a State employee where he gets a pension or does he fall under a different category? Considering he started at Utah in 1994 he would hit his 30 years now (and not being fire fighter or law enforcement) reach the 30 years needed (it is 35 years now) to get a 50% pension. In Utah pensions are figured out by the average of your highest three years. Based on what is publicly posted for Utah employees (link below) Whittingham has averaged $5,467,408.33 over the last three years. If he qualifies for a pension (which I doubt) he'd get $2,733,704.17 per year.

He would be grandfathered in. The change was for those hired after to my understanding.

I know some Ute fans who are nervous. Whitt has done more than 1 interview where he said he can't see himself coaching past age 65. He turns 65 in November.

They did make changes in the late 2000s. It used to be a 20 year retirement for law enforcement/fire fighters and 30 years for all others, after the legislature made changes it went to 25 years and 35 years. But as GeoAg mentioned anyone hired on before those changes stayed on the retirement plan that was in place when they were hired.

My late dad started working for USU in 1981 and went just over 30 years. There was a pension for him, l as well as a TIAA-Cref account though my mom is the one that collected it. I started in 2008 and the retirement was an account that was not funded by the state.

I no longer work there, but that was what was available in early 2008.

Usually, longtime coaches retire after some oddball disappointing season. Whittingham has been coaching football for 40 years, so statistically speaking that Whittingham is likely retiring after this season.

I heard yesterday he has some sweetheart deal lined up. Guaranteed 1 million a year for 5 years after he steps down from head coach. Something in the ADs office.
