Having a good cop and a bad cop is best
It seems like football teams are ran best when they have both, in terms of coaching, a good cop and a bad cop. I was hopeful for Dreiling based on how he did at New Mexico State, and do still think he could do better being able to focus on just the defense and could be a good head coach down the road and wasn't thrown into the best situation this year. I will also say there are NO changes that I think would do any good to be made midseason.
BUT, I think the difference was that at NMSU, Dreiling was suitable for being the good cop while Jerry Kill was the bad cop, and it's just not working with the kids only having a good cop in Dreiling. I watched a game last year where Jerry Kill got after a player for a stupid penalty. #11 for instance I would have to imagine did a better job tackling at NMSU or he wouldn't have played as much there, and wouldn't have been offered a spot by Dreiling to come here, but maybe not getting the criticism and chewed out by Jerry Kill here is making a difference. And I will acknowledge that #11 is far from the ONLY guy playing poorly.
We hate seeing BYU do well, but as an example that may be unpopular, Kalani takes criticism for being too laid back, and their defense was poor when they had both Kalani and Tuiaki as good cops. But then he hired Jay Hill to be the bad cop while continuing to be the good cop and they are a lot better.
Likewise, we were poor when the kids just had Matt Wells as the bad cop, were talking about him behind his back to people who would post here, as well as playing poorly themselves. But, after Wells hired David Yost and Keith Patterson to fit the roles as good cops, he was able to get away with being a bad cop, and it was probably good he did, and the team was a lot better and had the 2017(improvement from 2016) and 2018 seasons.
