Re: What head coaches that you like for next season
Why does it seem more often than not these hires want to leave Logan as soon as they can?Aglicious wrote: ↑October 27th, 2024, 11:31 pmI don't think GA 2.0 should be used as the example for how a Wells 2.0 would go. GA was not and had not been in the frame of mind to be a head coach for quite some time before we hired him back. Anyone who watched his presser after being hired had to know we had made a grave mistake. He had no fire, no passion, and didn't even appear all that engaged.
Of course there's no guarantee that Wells couldn't have some of these same issues but I think the chances are pretty low considering he doesn't carry the personal baggage that GA did and he is also all about being an Aggie. It means a bit more to him.
That being said, I can't see a world where DS and Wells exist in the same space. The DOJ is at USU mainly for the events that happened during Wells time (not that he had knowledge of it). There is no way DS holds up this banner of "doing the right thing" under the DOJ shield and then brings back the coach that was here during the actual incidents that are at the core of the DoJs very presence on campus.
She's looking to make a hire that gets her one step closer to leaving Logan. That is not Wells and I doubt that is Jay Hill either.
I’d be a fan of a Matt wells hire. Coached some of the best football we’ve had and he is still young and like you said he likes Utah State

No but he's the same person who got fired for poor coaching at Texas Tech and was on track to be fired here had he not pulled off one magical season with JL. Why would anyone want that? Unless they enjoy mediocrity.aggies22 wrote: ↑October 28th, 2024, 5:11 amNot even remotely close to the same person.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑October 27th, 2024, 4:20 pmThen you are simple minded. Every successful coach leaves Logan as soon as they can. The difference is that I think Matt wishes he had stayed. Gary LITERALLY left as soon as he could win more than 7 games and he's out.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑October 28th, 2024, 10:42 amLamenting that coaches want to leave Logan as soon as they can. 7-6 is basically .500
GA had a great year in 2012, and he was gone after the 2012 season

No thanks to Matt Wells. Grateful for what he did while he was here. He's a really good dude as well, but we need to turn the page to something new. Give me: Jay Hill, Jason Candle, Jason Eck, or Matt Entz over Wells please.

The reality is we have a large group of people to try to sell tickets to, and regardless of what the hardcore fans say about it being different, there is just too much trauma from a lot of people about the second stint thing not working.shoresy wrote: ↑October 28th, 2024, 11:42 amWouldn't it be simple minded to assume that because a re-hire didn't work in one situation, that it absolutely won't work in an entirely different situation?OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑October 27th, 2024, 4:20 pmThen you are simple minded. That's just one argument. The biggest reason not to re hire him is that he's (unfortunately) a mediocre coach.shoresy wrote: ↑October 28th, 2024, 11:42 amWouldn't it be simple minded to assume that because a re-hire didn't work in one situation, that it absolutely won't work in an entirely different situation?OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑October 27th, 2024, 4:20 pmThen you are simple minded. Everybody who I have talked to who knows Jay Hill says he is very much interested in the job and would definitely take it if it were proferred.
I don't think we should just dismiss Bret Vigen out of hand either. The guy has some amazing work with nothing.
But ultimately it doesn't matter what I or you think. It's just time they get on with it.

Re: What head coaches that you like for next season
Expanding the sample size beyond USU, a retread hire rarely works well. Being successful a second time seems to be more of the exception than the norm. Of course, it is also possible that the second time around the coach is generally just average, which isn't good enough to keep a head coaching job for very long.shoresy wrote: ↑October 28th, 2024, 11:42 amWouldn't it be simple minded to assume that because a re-hire didn't work in one situation, that it absolutely won't work in an entirely different situation?OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑October 27th, 2024, 4:20 pmThen you are simple minded. As I commented before, I'm not necessarily opposed to Matt Wells, but I think we will have better options available.
And in response to the comment someone made about needing to get moving on hiring a coach, I fully expect there have been a number of conversations with agents and coaching candidates about the opening. Those conversations will likely intensify in the next couple of weeks, with the new permanent coach announced in early December. Hopefully they plan it so the transfer portal window for a head coaching change (assuming it opens due to a change with an interim head coach) isn't open beyond the existing Dec. 28 window.

Despite everything that’s gone on, this job will be coveted.
The list of already interested suitors, even before “officially” available, is unbelievable. Gonna be an exciting off season

IN all reality we should not be waiting until the offseason to start. If we lose the WSU game I would inform Nate that he will be not be retained after the season is over and officially open the position. That gives 3 weeks prior to the season being over to start the process and get it rolling.

-Transfer portal allows for insanely quick rebuilds
-we’re going to be in the pac conference
-The Hurd. This cannot be understated, the passion the students have despite being 2-6 is amazing. There’s so much potential.
Obviously we’re way way down right now, but one season does not make nor break a program.
We’ll be back sooner than you think.

I don’t care about the flashiness of the hire, I want the best available coach. I’ve stated previously that I want Jay Hill. I’m still on that wagon, but if there is a better option, I’m all for that too.

Re: What head coaches that you like for next season
Jay Hill! Unless Ryan Day gets fired and wants to live in Logan.flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑October 28th, 2024, 2:39 pmI don’t care about the flashiness of the hire, I want the best available coach. I’ve stated previously that I want Jay Hill. I’m still on that wagon, but if there is a better option, I’m all for that too.

Thanks for this. The PAC I understand. Do potential coaches really mention the HURD as a big reason to come coach here? For basketball I 100% understand the HURD being a big reason as the Spectrum is special, I just don't think Maverik gets that loud.bigblue32 wrote: ↑October 28th, 2024, 2:24 pmThere’s many reasons.

You’d be surprised how important it is, look across college football, even many “superior” programs have (I can't express myself without swearing) support and no care factor from the students.Madmartigan wrote: ↑October 28th, 2024, 3:00 pmThanks for this. It matters a lot. Look at even in basketball, drake Allen talking about how amazing the spectrum was vs Weber. And that was a paltry showing by most of our standards for the spectrum.
Even having a thousand students in attendance is incredible
The same thing is echoed across our volleyball, soccer and gymnastics teams. The support really matters.
Many programs with an empty stadium/arena would love to have a fraction of what we have.
Are we able to compete with stadiums 3x’s our size? No but we absolutely have a huge care factor, and it shows through even in our most down seasons

When there are only 134 jobs available it automatically makes it a very desirable job.Madmartigan wrote:I've heard this stated before - the coveted part - what about the job makes it desirable to these exciting candidates?

Sure. What I meant was that it's a more desirable job even beyond the scarcity of being only 1/134. As in - it might be a top 50-75 job and not a 75-100 or 100-134 ranked CFB head coaching job. I think that's what @bigblue32 is implying unless I'm wrong.FeartheFro wrote: ↑October 28th, 2024, 6:49 pmWhen there are only 134 jobs available it automatically makes it a very desirable job.Madmartigan wrote:I've heard this stated before - the coveted part - what about the job makes it desirable to these exciting candidates?

We have always been able to get a good pool of candidates (maybe we haven't always chosen the best choice) in both basketball and football.Madmartigan wrote: ↑October 29th, 2024, 9:55 amSure. Years ago when I worked in the AD's office when we hired Eustachey, I was working and a resume for a WAC coach (we were in the Big West) came over the fax.
It's funny reading some supposed experts and their list of coaches. Heck one had the WR's coach at San Jose? Odds are we will get another D1 FBS coach or a successful coordinator.
If Jay Hill is the choice, it worked out pretty well the last time we got a DC from an in-state program who had previous FCS experience.

Re: What head coaches that you like for next season
Yeah after him we hired a very good wac coach. Bad hire with duryea, but then made 3 good hires(hopefully 4) that were proven head coaches. Hopefully the same thing with this football hireDonman wrote: ↑October 29th, 2024, 10:13 amWe have always been able to get a good pool of candidates (maybe we haven't always chosen the best choice) in both basketball and football.Madmartigan wrote: ↑October 29th, 2024, 9:55 amSure.
