What head coaches that you like for next season

Post by SLB » September 8th, 2024, 12:18 am

I start it off with my list
I have a head coaching search with the following names: Thomas Hammock, Scot Loeffler, Clay Helton, G.J. Kinne, Jason Candle, Tim Albin, and Jason Eck.
What is your list of coaches that you would consider?

Bowling green would really hate us if we stole their football coach

Any candidates named Tod / Todd perchance?

This topic is not worth anybody’s time. We all know that Sabua has some coach from Ohio that she wants to hire. The sad thing is that I think Dreiling is doing a fine job. I don’t think cefalo is a good offensive coordinator.

It’s hard to judge Dreiling harshly at all under the circumstances, but the schedule does not do him any favors to impress Diana and win the job. Kinda feel for the guy.

I like Jason Eck at Idaho a lot. His team today against Wyoming was everything I wish our team was — likable, no non-sense, disciplined, and tough as nails. But I don’t think he’ll get picked.

I expect 8 wins wouldn't get Nate the job. He'd have to make it impossible for Sabau not to hire him to get hired.

I hope it doesn't hurt his chances at an HC job a decade from now when he's actually ready.

Jimbo Fisher. He would sure love the chance to beat Texas A&M and tell them to kiss his (I can't express myself without swearing).

If I'm not mistaken, Jim Tressel coached at Youngstown prior to coaching Ohio State. I think he's available, too.

Don’t care who it is as long as they build a football team from the inside out and actually prioritize the trenches. That hasn’t happened under Blake and is the main reason we aren’t competitive in big games. Longing for the days of Jordan Nielsen and BJ Larsen *sigh*

Ironically, Jason Candle really might be one of the best, realistic candidates for the job.

Gonna have to lower expectations. All the recent drama in the program plus all the money we're going to end up paying Blake is going to make it extremely difficult to attract/afford many decent candidates.

Going to have to take the "diamond in the rough" route to find our next coach.

Top picks for FCS coaches in my opinion - Jason Eck and Brent Vigen
Brent Vigen is Montana State's head coach and was a longtime assistant coach to Craig Bohl.

Some of the coaches that I listed are being paid about half or less of what BA was being paid.
If cost is a real concern and need a quick rebuild, Brent Vigen might be the way to go.

If we’re going for diamond in the rough, just keep Dreiling. He hasn’t even had a full offseason to put a staff and team together. I like the guy a lot. Give him 3 years to develop on a smaller contract than we maybe would pay a more experienced coach. If he completely bombs after 1-2 years, buy out the last year and try again.

Yeah, I don't hate the idea. Though it would be a pretty tough sell if we end up only winning 3 or 4 games this year.

I know some are very opposed to hiring an FCS coach, but I really don't think there's all that much difference between the top FCS teams and mid MWC teams these days. There are a lot of guys at that level worth considering.

I agree. I’m not a huge fan of most FCS coaches being elevated but if it’s one of the high end programs it could work.

I actually would be interested in checking out Matt Entz from USC who won championships at NDSU and just helped kick our butts. Not sure we could afford him though.

Brent Vigen is 35-9 (5-3 in the postseason) at Montana State.
Runner-up, semi-final, and upset by North Dakota State in the 2nd round (it was decided in overtime) in his 1st 3 seasons at Montana State as HC, and Montana State's final FCS rankings #2, #4/#5, and #8/#9. Montana State is currently #3. Nevada has the previous Montana State head coach as their head coach. Brent Vigen was the OC/QB coach for Bohl from 2009 to 2020, and he coached Josh Allen and Carson Wentz. Vigen was the OC/QB coach for Wyoming from 2014-2020, and Vigen was AHC from 2017-2020 for Wyoming.
I have to imagine that Vigen wants a shot at being a MWC head coach.

In the event it happens, there is no way a coaching search leaves the state of Ohio.

That requires development and all you are doing is acting as a AA minor league team developing guys for the majors.

Face it. You get what you pay for in this deal and if they turn out to surprise you somebody else pays more.
it’s not impossible. Plenty of schools with worse NIL and worse budgets than us have no problem doing it.

It’s a philosophy shift. We are bringing in Lineman Talent that it’s comparable to everyone else in the conference. We’re just not developing them like other programs.

Don’t care who it is as long as they build a football team from the inside out and actually prioritize the trenches. That hasn’t happened under Blake and is the main reason we aren’t competitive in big games. Longing for the days of Jordan Nielsen and BJ Larsen *sigh*
That is impossible to do at the bottom of the NiI.

The philosophy behind bringing in guys with 1 or 2 years of eligibility remaining is they should in theory, require little to no development.
