Who else went through a tragic death of a High School mate
As a follow up to the tragic death of Dre Seldon, who else went through something like this while they were in high school? Probably all of us did with a few classmates* while they were in high school, more than they should have as you can probably remember at least a few years, a page on a yearbook dedicated to the loving memory of someone. And by classmate, I would consider it anyone who was in high school while they were they, be it someone from the same class, a senior from their freshman or sophomore year, or a freshman from their junior or senior year.
I'll start by mentioning something that a few people who post here who were at Logan High with me would remember this, at a review for our dance team, part of which included announcing the girls who made the team for the following school year, one of the girls who made the team and was going to be introduced as making the team, died of a heart condition. Even though I didn't know her, I can remember going to seminary the next day when it was a hot topic of conversation. I'm sure there are other people who post here that knew her. I'll never forget going to senior Lagoon Day when I mentioned to someone from out of the area that I went to Logan High and the first thing they mentioning knowing about the school was the girl who died trying out for drill.
There was also a car accident that a girl in my high school and stake growing up died from. She was a few years older than me but had a brother my age.

Re: Who else went through a tragic death of a High School mate
I learned about that girl from her older sister a few years later when she and her family lived in the Blackhawk neighborhood at the same time as my wife and I when we were students. From what I was told, the mother ended up pregnant soon thereafter, in large part needing something to fill the hole in her life after losing her daughter, and she had twins.
As I recall, there were two at my high school in California, Etiwanda, which has sent a number of athletes to USU over the years. One was a friend who died of a brain tumor. The other was a kid I was friends with some in elementary school but ended up dying in a drive-by shooting.

You graduated from Logan High a year before I did so I remember her well. A classmate of mine died our Junior year from a heart condition. I think someone died the summer before my freshman year. I think someone else may have died in that period as well.GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑August 1st, 2024, 6:27 pmAs a follow up to the tragic death of Dre Seldon, who else went through something like this while they were in high school? I didn’t know any of them personally but it is still hard to deal with at that age especially. I hope the guys on the football team are taking advantage of any resources offered to them

Re: Who else went through a tragic death of a High School mate
Went to a smaller school in Idaho. Seems like we lost a student every year to something. In the time I was in middle schoola nd high school, I can think of 2 boys in the class two years ahead of me, one girl in the class ahead of me, one boy in my class, 3 boys in the class behind me, and then one in the class two years behind me, as well as one of my teachers.
The boy in my class was a close friend. Was killed in an avalanche on his snow mobile. I still think of him often.

During my senior year at Davis High my Spanish teacher was murdered by her boyfriend who then committed suicide. There were a few of us that were pretty close to her. It was scarring.

Sky View had a bad streak in the mid to late 90’s. I had 3 teammates who died in a car crash as we were heading into our Jr year. The next year we lost another guy in the grade below us to a car crash. Also that same summer we lost a guy that had already graduated but played football to a surgical mishap.
Pretty rough stretch for sure.

Re: Who else went through a tragic death of a High School mate
All too familiar and unfortunate that most of us seem to experience this somewhere along the line. I had a friend get hit by a drunk driver crossing the street in front of the high school, I just got done talking to the dude in class, so obviously, it was very traumatic for me. It only took Caltrans (Ca's version of UDOT) 20 years to figure out that the HS was down the road from a notorious biker bar, and they should consider traffic calming measures on the highway that ran in front of the school/didn't need a 4-lane divided highway in this location. Sad.

Isn’t that also about the same time Sky View had a football player get hazed and one of his testicles popped? Can’t remember if it was the left or right, but now that he is down to one, he is probably more selective on things for which he is willing to give up his most precious nut.aggies22 wrote: ↑August 2nd, 2024, 11:59 pmGrew up playing ball with all those dudes.breadysmith wrote: ↑August 2nd, 2024, 10:29 amSky View had a bad streak in the mid to late 90’s. Re: Who else went through a tragic death of a High School mate
@breadysmith that was a rough year. I remember all those guys well. One killed in the first accident was a good friend. The one who died after graduation I played football with from 3rd to 12th grade. The other was an accident at the Hyde park Maverik…. I saw the car right after it happened. Also in that time frame my teachers wife and daughter were killed in an accident in the car in front of him. He had already lost another daughter to an accident in the SV parking lot years earlier.ususports wrote: ↑August 3rd, 2024, 5:05 amIsn’t that also about the same time Sky View had a football player get hazed and one of his testicles popped? The hazing was a couple years earlier.. but the bolded part never happened. That happened to one of the other kids he was on Donahue with tho.
It was an interesting time to be at SV. Lots of fun times too!

I was patrolling that day… I will never forget the look on the face of her mom and dad as they were brought to the scene on a snowmobile. The whole mountain was stunned… I almost quit the patrol after that. Hard day for sure.GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑August 2nd, 2024, 9:52 amI will add that my sister had a friend who died from a skiing accident at Beaver Mountain.

I had a teammate broke his neck skiing over Christmas break of our Jr. year. He was a quadriplegic for the rest of his life. He could only communicate with his eyes. It really sucked.

Re: Who else went through a tragic death of a High School mate
I grew up on a great street with good, normal families. In a five year span while I was in high school, 1 dad on the street died in a motorcycle accident, 1 dad died while working for highway patrol, and another dad died from a sudden medical issue out of the blue.
Definitely shaped my decision on balancing time with my family.

Re: Who else went through a tragic death of a High School mate
I had a friend in high school who a few years back was picking up his daughter from a birthday party in the late afternoon. He was parked outside the house with the drivers side door to the street. He got out to go to the front door when a drunk driver skidded around the corner. I won’t go into detail but the dude sped off with most of my friend stuck to his car.
The really terrible part was his daughter was on the front porch waiting for him and saw the whole thing.

Re: Who else went through a tragic death of a High School mate
I guess I’ll add this since the 10th anniversary is coming up and I can’t get it off my mind.
I had a sister who was a year older than me who had some special needs. It took her much longer to learn concepts than most kids and spent a lot of time with special ed tutors. She was also about 4 years behind socially which was a big gap in high school. She was often bullied because of this. Physically she excelled and was usually one of the best players on her team. (Similar to Boobie Miles)
Junior year she tried out for the school soccer team and made it. The team had a “rule” where all new players had to go through an embarrassing “trial” for privacy reasons I won’t divulge specifics but my sister was killed during what was supposed to be a harmless prank.

Working where I do we have a high rate of suicides compared to a lot of other professions. Back in 2016 I was working in maximum security and two good friends committed suicide within a couple weeks of each other. The hardest part was I talked with one of the afternoon of and the other the day before. Still wonder (like the opening line of the Linkin Park song) if there were any signs that I missed.

Junior year she tried out for the school soccer team and made it. The team had a “rule” where all new players had to go through an embarrassing “trial” for privacy reasons I won’t divulge specifics but my sister was killed during what was supposed to be a harmless prank.
10/10 hope my funeral is the same way.
I've always thought it should be a celebration of life, but then again, I haven't dealt with a tragic passing such as this.

Re: Who else went through a tragic death of a High School mate
Had a friend who I played HS Soccer with that was a year ahead of me end up committing suicide his freshman year of college. Definitely gave me a different outlook on life in general after that happened. We were a small HS and I still remember the day they announced it in school. It was easily one of the most upsetting things I’ve been told. That was a tough one.

I guess most of the time it is isn’t it? This was just like Bilbo Baggins birthday party with less fireworks.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑August 4th, 2024, 1:25 pmYeah. Sometimes I think about that soccer team and get mad but now later in life I mostly feel bad for them. They were just a bunch of kids who did something stupid and it went wrong in the worst possible way. . Some of them had been friends but the girls directly responsible were pretty messed up by the whole ordeal. Again I won’t go into details but that whole terrible situation came very close to multiplying.

Re: Who else went through a tragic death of a High School mate
I remember the hazing incident well because it got us (Box Elder) into the playoffs my senior year. When we played you guys I got what I thought was a cheap late hit on the QB and later in the game I tried to pull up my rush to avoid another and the QB stepped on me with his plant foot cleat and cracked all the bones in the top of my foot, Then right at halftime we tried a long Fg that fell short and you guys returned it for a TD down your sideline with extra players and coaches on the field. It was the difference in the game and you guys pushed us out of a playoff spot. The Old Bull wrote: ↑August 3rd, 2024, 6:18 am@breadysmith that was a rough year. Pretty rough stretch for sure.
The hazing was a couple years earlier.. but the bolded part never happened. That happened to one of the other kids he was on Donahue with tho.. One of the local(SLC) stations came and filmed our practice and interviewed some of the team. Allot of the national news picked up the clip. Donahue showed the clip as part of their show. After seeing me on TV(running the ball in practice) My grandma called up my mom and asked her “what are those Mormons doing out there in Utah… my grandson wasn’t part of that was he”.
It was an interesting time to be at SV. Lots of fun times too!
Then the hazing incident occurred and SV's season got cancelled and we got the playoff spot back which we felt was pretty good Karma and me especially,,,lol. I got cleared to play the week before and we ended up stealing a playoff game with a pretty mediocre team and I got a couple games to finish my senior year. Crazy memories..lol

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Re: Who else went through a tragic death of a High School mate
There were several of those deaths shared where I can take you to their grave site in the Logan Cemetery.
Recently, I was looking through some of my daughters' photos from their time in high school. There were several young men that had passed away in recent years. One took his own life and another died from a heart issue. Also on my street, a father was killed in a motorcycle accident. I remember being the one to tell my friend of the passing.
Loss is very hard. I really do pray for our football team. They have experienced a lot over the offseason. I can't imagine the hurt they feel.
