Scotty G & Hans Media Day Coverage
Scotty G this morning on 1280 claims that USU's offense should be "elite." Claims we are more talented on paper than the championship team from a few years ago and that the question mark is defense. Argues that with the firepower of our offense, our defense does not have to be great, just good enough. Thoughts? I really have no idea. New head coach, different players, new, inexperienced, OC. He seemed fairly confident about our offense. I hope he's right.

Re: Scotty G Earlier Today
We are seemingly very deep at WR. If Petras can utilize the TE’s and the O Line can keep him healthy we could be great. Briggs and Faison are studs. It seems like there’s a lot of unknowns and new players on defense.
It will really come down to coaching and play calling j think.

Interesting take given we have a QB none of us have seen in action, and two QBs with experience transferred out during spring portal season.AggieDad wrote: ↑August 1st, 2024, 3:11 pmScotty G this morning on 1280 claims that USU's offense should be "elite." I'm very hopeful, but there are plenty of offenses that have struggled with elite playmakers when the QB can't get them the ball. And even if Petras is really good, not sure about our QB depth if he gets hurt.
Regardless, having a new play caller besides BA has me intrigued. The frustrations with BAs play calling have been well documented on this board.
Pencil me in as cautiously optimistic.

I don’t pretend to be football literate enough to be able to break down actual plays like aggies22 or Aggship, but I do know the Deven Thompkins made our offense look really, really good in 2021. We got a lot of “chunk plays” by just airing it out and letting him his that 48” vertical to high point the ball over defendersAggie702 wrote: ↑August 1st, 2024, 4:20 pmInteresting take given we have a QB none of us have seen in action, and two QBs with experience transferred out during spring portal season.AggieDad wrote: ↑August 1st, 2024, 3:11 pmScotty G this morning on 1280 claims that USU's offense should be "elite." I agree with Scotty but man our schedule is going to be brutal. Even if we are much better than last year I’m not sure you will notice with our schedule.

I agree. Given everything that has gone on with the program, these boys have nothing to lose this season. An opponent who has nothing to lose can be dangerous. Let's hope the Aggie's can surprise us in a couple of these games.

Re: Scotty G Earlier Today
This is probably preseason drinking the Kool-Aid. I think if the defense can stop Ashton Jeanty and turn into a middle of the pack defense it will be a good year. The big question mark is the front seven and if they can get bring down the person with the ball. Last season was miserable watching all the missed tackles.
Offensively, Petras wasn’t great at Iowa, but McNamara wasn’t bad at Michigan and struggled at Iowa. I expect a QB that is better than Legas last season. There is also enough depth that a few injuries wouldn’t be devastating. I see week the week 6 game against Boise as the pivotal game for the season. I get Boise has all the hype, but having a highly recruited QB that has never played college football and was third string last year sounds like a 50/50 shot at best. Beating Boise to open the conference season sets up the rest of the schedule with teams that aren’t as talented. Lose to Boise and it will take more moxey to make it to the conference championship than the team would have at that point.
That’s why they play the game though, because you never really know what will happen.

*IF* Petras is as good as many are saying (including Dreiling himself), I'm extremely excited about this offense. I think we have great receivers and running backs and solid tight ends. If our o-line can step up and Petras is actually good, it could be a lot of fun.

But we had Logan Bonner, who was a decent QB and could make throws. I'm worried about Petras being a below average QB lol. To your point, I'm sure DT bailed Bonner out plenty of times.greggers1868 wrote: ↑August 1st, 2024, 4:37 pmI don’t pretend to be football literate enough to be able to break down actual plays like aggies22 or Aggship, but I do know the Deven Thompkins made our offense look really, really good in 2021. I am holding reservations about the offense given Blake being gone and Cefalo calling plays for the first time. The talent is there if things come together. Excited to cheer on this team.

Re: Scotty G Earlier Today
I'm not worried about it being Cefalo instead of Blake calling the plays. What I'm more worried about is Dreiling doing the game management for the first time ever, getting the little organizational things like clock management right. I do think it's good he was able to bring in the two new guys he did to help with those kinds of things. There are things that are different about FBS compared to D2 and JUCO, but there are things constant like how you manage the clock, calling run plays to stay in bounds if you are wanting to run the clock, calling plays to get to the sidelines if you are wanting to stop the clock. D2 and JUCO are for instance the same as FBS in that you can't spike the ball on fourth down.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑August 1st, 2024, 7:07 pmI am holding reservations about the offense given Blake being gone and Cefalo calling plays for the first time. However, the new coaches do need to be refreshed on the instant replay rules that don't exist in D2 and JUCO.

And Royals is faster, taller, and stronger than Devin. That’s the optimistic side with a strong armed qb and the simplified wide spread offense he will get his and create 1 on 1 matchups all over the field that the qb just has to Id and get the ball out.greggers1868 wrote: ↑August 1st, 2024, 4:37 pmI don’t pretend to be football literate enough to be able to break down actual plays like aggies22 or Aggship, but I do know the Deven Thompkins made our offense look really, really good in 2021. I’ll just add this, I hope DJ Tialavea is on the Aggie coaching Staff for the rest of his career. Whether that’s as a Coordinator or eventually the Head Guy. He’s an incredible asset to this school.

Thoughts from Utah State Media Days
First and foremost, thanks to Hans and Scotty for taking a whole day of their show to highlight the event. They were professional and asked great questions.
I listened to the majority of the interviews and here's what stood out to me.
Cooper Bassett:
- Little to no attrition here mainly due to the relationships he has established with his players.
- He told a great story about Spencer Petras that got me really excited. During a spring practice, he told Petras not to run a certain run play if a nose guard is lined up over the center, then several weeks later they were on the two-yard line, had a power run play called, however Petras audibled out of it out of nowhere and the play resulted in a short TD pass to Jaylen Royals. Then Coach Bassett (who was a little frustrated they didn't run the ball), asked Spencer why he called the audible, and he said, "Well the line did a shift that put the nose guard over the center, and I remember what you told me last week, so I switched out of the called play." Coach Bassett then told Hans and Scotty "When you have a quarterback who can see that, it makes your offensive line look better."
Jaylen Royals:
- He loves the coaches and the scheme. He says the wide splits gives him more single coverages. This is one of the bigger reasons he stayed. He most likely will get double coverages no matter which team he plays on, but our scheme allows him to have higher production than other schemes. It appears that he is giving up money on the table now in NIL because he believes he has a better shot at the NFL here at Utah State. THAT NEEDS TO BE OUR SALES PITCH TO OUR FUTURE STARS.
Nate Dreiling
- I loved his attitude toward our schedule. As much as I liked Blake, his reluctance to play against tough out of conference opponents was frustrating. Nate on the other hand is more excited to play USC, Utah, and Boise than most fans are. You can tell he thinks we can beat them. It was a breath of Fresh Air.
I'm so excited for our season. I'm still predicting a 9-3 record.

Loved listening to all the interviews from yesterday this morning. What a great show that was almost exclusively USU related, just flat out awesome. Obviously we need to see how Nate rallies this team and how the team performs but i am pulling for him to have success and get the job. He has a good head on his shoulders.

We were a top 25 offense and improved at nearly every position. Losing Vaughn, Davis, and Booth are the main loses but I feel comfortable with what we did to replace them. I think we’ll be the top offense in the conference and top 25 in the country.

I would include Cooper as a big loss as well. From all accounts Spencer performed really well in spring ball and legitimately won the job but Cooper has a really solid year this past season.

That is one hell of an optimistic statement for a qb room with pretty mediocre historical stats who have never run this offense, and an OC that has never called a play. Do they have that potential? Sure they do, but I'd hold that thought for a few games.

When you see Petras throw that ball, that statement will be just a memory. Petras is pro-style. Just in the spring scrimmage, it was clear he was better talented than cooper. Cooper was limited with the deep ball, Petras is not. We are well ahead of last year with minimal loss from an offensive standpoint. I like our chances to compete for a MW title.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑August 2nd, 2024, 2:25 pmI would include Cooper as a big loss as well. Blake was comfortable enough to make that decision even to the point so Legas was aware and could transfer for playing time

I tend to agree with you on this. Hard to think we’ll be quite as good offensively without BA, if for no other reason than a drop off in coaching experience. That said, listening to ND’s comments with Scotty/Hans yesterday… at one point he mentioned the expectation to have the top offense in the MWC this season. I’m hearing lots of optimism for that side of the ball.

None of this will matter a lick if we can't protect our QB and put pressure on the opposing QB.

I'm not too worried about our O-line this year being able to provide protection, but you make a good point about getting pressure on opponent's qb's.
