I thought that Arizona State is D1.usugoalie13 wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 8:06 pmOkay SLB. Who has USU played that's D1. They have played D1 ACHA teams but not NCAA teams. USU hockey played teams that are D1 hockey and did well against them. I could see potential success with our hockey (I swear that it is 3rd most popular sport here (there are always a good number of fans watching the games).

We have played ACHA div 1 teams. But not NCAA. ASU has had NCAA hockey since 2015. We have never played them. I played for USU until 2012. After that, I scouted for oregon until 2022. I know the western hockey landscape.

Firing the defensive coordinator costed us a defensive player we didn't want to lose, but the trade was still worth it.3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 12:53 pmIf you really want to see players leave Utah State, firing the coach is a good way to do it.

Re: We need to start searching for a new head coach
The different divisions in hockey is lost on people from Utah. Hell probanly the majority of the west coast. Everyone here thinks a school that has a D1 team that plays USU doesnt realize we play there pratice sqad. Just wait until Utah gets a wiff of the NHL draft. I love how posters bring up the USU hockey team and the love they have for them but fail to mention a local kid is the starting goalie and is pretty damn good.usugoalie13 wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 9:42 pmWe have played ACHA div 1 teams. Re: We need to start searching for a new head coach
ASU didn't become NCAA until 2015. As far as the fans. I got asked multiple times a week if i was going to end up in the NHL. The fans at school were great, but had no idea.SLB wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 9:57 pmI thought that we played them in the years in the 2013-2014 years.usugoalie13 wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 9:42 pmWe have played ACHA div 1 teams. I know that they were not D1 at that time. I figured that we played something of the D1 Arizona State team.usugoalie13 wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 10:13 pmASU didn't become NCAA until 2015. Re: We need to start searching for a new head coach
We play ASU often. Just not NCAA. If it's acha div 1 or 2, that's a different question, but definitely not NCAA
Re: We need to start searching for a new head coach
Thank you for being the voice of reason. I would LOVE a hockey or baseball team at USU. But it's just never, ever, ever going to happen, and there are literally millions of reasons why.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 5:35 pmThe amount of ignorance in this thread is astounding.aggieinthesouth wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 5:15 pmI would drop men’s golf. does not cost a lot to have, but also does not seem like it would generate money either. Weather does not allow for a lot of practice time.Donman wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 2:10 pmWhich women's sport are we going to add (or men's sport are we going to drop)?SLB wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 2:08 pmI do agree with this, and there is also the upcoming Winter Olympics.CaptainChaos wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 1:53 pmStart investing in the hockey program at USU. USU hockey played teams that are D1 hockey and did well against them. I could see potential success with our hockey (I swear that it is 3rd most popular sport here (there are always a good number of fans watching the games).
I'll just highlight a few of the major points, without even getting into more of the details:
The costs to run a D1Hockey program are about $3M PER YEAR more than running a D1 golf team. You guys got the money to pay for that? Should we pull $3M/year away from the basketball program to play hockey?
2nd. Title 9 exists. Hockey has 13 more scholarships per team than Golf. That means you need another 13 scholarships for women to match even if you drop men's golf. So not only are we adding the costs of a hockey program, now we have to fund another women's sport as well.
Golf would be one of the last programs USU would EVER drop. This is a common talking point from people who have no idea what they're talking about.
To be a D1 school you have to have a minimum of 14 sports, 7 women & 7 men teams, or 6 men teams and 8 women teams (football takes up so many scholarships that the scholarship number about matches at 6 & 8 total sports teams). Like I've said before, there is essentially a finite budget for sports outside of football and basketball, because they aren't really generating any revenue.
Golf is by far the cheapest athletic program to run and the last amount of scholarships. That's why you will always see a golf team. It counts as one of the 6 men's sports needed but is the cheapest one to have pulling from finite dollars.
Those are just a few of the reasons.
That said, if you enjoy hockey or baseball, the club team games are a blast. Not NCAA, and definitely a lower level of competition, but still a great time.

Or, we need to make him an offer he can't refuse.Hoot wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 6:33 pmSo what you’re saying is we need to convince someone else to hire him?Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 25th, 2024, 6:31 pmSLB is the king of talking about ways to spend other people’s money.
Blake Anderson isn’t getting fired. We can’t pay that buyout.
Here’s a fun fact about his contract too. His buyout from another team hiring him is only 1/2 those amounts.

Re: We need to start searching for a new head coach
A few years back there was a kid on DU's club hockey team that got offered a spot on the DU NCAA hockey team. That was big news! It is saying that maybe one every 10 to 20 years there is a single player on the ACHA team (USU's level) that could make an NCAA team. Back when we started the hockey team Paul Amidon came and played for us (his brother Kurt was here too) and Paul was by far our best defensive player and he told me he had one Division III offer for hockey out of high school. There is simply no comparison to our ACHA team and an NCAA DI hockey team. I love our team, they are good players and are gritty but every senior we have will be playing beer league hockey the next season.

I’m not the leader of the Blake fan club, but in terms of on-field stuff, there’s zero reason to fire Blake. There’s also zero chance that USU does this from a financial perspective.
I won’t tell other people what to talk about, but this discussion is futile.

Re: We need to start searching for a new head coach
Yeah, don't love BA, but we could do worse. He is an average coach. We are an average G5 program and relative to all of college football, below average in fan support, resources, money, and prestige. The current NIL/portal landscape emphasizes the money problem and I think it is currently harder to maintain a competitive roster in football than basketball. I'll still cheer like heIl, but I'm not going to be to gutted when we struggle to finish at 0.500 this year.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑April 26th, 2024, 8:24 amI’m not the leader of the Blake fan club, but in terms of on-field stuff, there’s zero reason to fire Blake. If you start looking to replace a current coach before a season starts you have no business complaining about when coaches leave in the exact manner that Sprinkle or Odom left.

If Blake can get to 6-6 this year with this schedule and this attrition, that’s a damn fine accomplishment.

Re: We need to start searching for a new head coach
We don’t need a new coach!! We have a really good one. We can only hope to retain him, when this team crushes it!! Too many kids in the portal to think that he won’t find really good replacements for the athletes that left.
Fans just need to stop being so emotionally attached to players and believing they’re here to stay. They’re not emotionally attached to you!! You have to believe that these guys will play better, win, get recognized, and leave. At least they don’t take the championships with them when they’re gone. Those belong to US!!
