We wonder why coaches aren't loyal. Guy won us our first MWC Title and after two bowl eligible seasons we want him out the door.
After 2 *losing* seasons
With at least 2 of the top 5 worst losses I’ve ever seen.

Wouldn’t surprise me. I will always be a fan but it makes it really hard to cheer for transfers when they go to pwovo or slc.

It’s depressing that I can’t pick which two you mean. I know Weber but there’s a few options for the second.

The terrible thing about BA is that--considering the way he is treated by this fan base--he will leave once he does have another really good season. Some act like Matt Wells was the man. Year to year comparison:

Year Wells BA
1st 9-5 11-3
2nd 10-4 6-7
3rd 6-7 6-7
4th 3-9 6-7?
5th 6-7 10-4?
6th 10-2 gone?
7th gone

Blake isn't Stew. But he's also not Guy. We could probably have better. We could definitely have worse.

Honest question, who is going to win 10 games again at USU? IN our whole Aggie football history we have won 10 games at total of 4 times. 2 by Wells, 1 with Gary and 1 with Blake. Of note they have all came in the last 12-13 years. Blake has flaws but he is not a terrible coach we could do much worse.

BA is also the only coach that has been at USU during the NIL and no transfer restrictions era. It's a new/unique challenge other USU coaches didn't have to deal with. I've been very frustrated with some of his in game decisions, his loyalty to certain coaches/players and the recent regression trends. But the new transfer rules and money are beyond his control. Is BA the guy that can adapt to the new reality and keep USU competitive in the MWC? Guess we will find out.

Even without the portaling this spring I didn't have high expectations for this season. Coming off two 6 win seasons and with the schedule we have it was going to be rough. Losing key pieces will make it even worse. A 3 win season wouldn't surprise me.

Blake is the only coach I have seen ever go after the fans. I could care less if he, GA, Wells, or anyone else is coaching us. JFW while you’re here. If you win, there’s a huge payday. If you lose, you’re out with a huge payday. It’s a win-win for any coach. They’re all mercenaries and now the players are too.

I don't have an issue with Blake. He has been fine. I certainly feel for him and the personal issues he has had to endure. I appreciate the first season. That was amazing. I recognize the new landscape of college sports is very difficult for a school like USU.

With that said, he has also had a lot of issues during his time here with the program. Things have been said that shouldn't be said. Players have done things that shouldn't be done. Coaches have also done things that shouldn't be done. I don't really like the way Blake has handled the quarterbacks. I think Cauthen was an atrocious hire. I'm not a fan of his deflection when things aren't going well. His press conference calling out fans was not a good look. It isn't the only time he has acted like that. Fans are going to boo when you lose to the FCS school down the road at home by a wide margin.

Through family contacts, BYU has made overtures to Legas for the past two plus years. The family, mostly the dad, does not like the BYU OC. If Legas does go to BYU, it says more about the state of the BYU program than it does about Legas. We’ll see …….

If a Jordan Love fell into his lap with the quality of skill position guys he has been able to recruit and or keep I could see it if the defense improves. I don't like his offensive style that much but it produces and is light years ahead of anything Matt Wells did except for Chuckie's first few games in 2012 and when the AD hired Yost to coach Love.

Remember Matt Wells was forced to leave the offense and Yost wasn't chosen by him. Then he lucked into one of the top 5 QBs in the world.

His 3-9 was comparable to our 6-7 BA teams.

My good man, I fear you have misunderstood my posts. I never insinuated I could see the future in that post but reading is hard (if you don’t believe me, join us in the sandbox sometime) so I won’t hold that against you.

The trajectory of Blake’s tenure is a big down arrow and he’s an old dog in a new world. That does not lend itself to winning ten games with him again.

The overall program however, as was pointed out, has been on the up in the last 13 or so years and it stands to reason that at some point in the future we will win ten games again. Given Blake’s performance, I believe it is unlikely to happen with him at the helm. But as I said, I try as I might I cannot see the future.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out. If you’re feeling confident in reading we can work on numbers next time.

Is the Mountain west really all that different. Its always been Boise, SDSU, Fresno (at times) and then everyone else. Wells teams beat Boise once in 10 years and got run over by SDSU. They didn't show up in money games either.

Wells had a tougher schedule.
His 3-9 was comparable to our 6-7 BA teams.
Is the Mountain west really all that different. Its always been Boise, SDSU, Fresno (at times) and then everyone else. Wells teams beat Boise once in 10 years and got run over by SDSU. They didn't show up in money games either.
I went back and researched it. We played a weak MWC schedule for the last 2 years plus a weak non-conference schedule.

It would make no sense for Legas to go to either Utah or BYU. Both teams have their QB set for the coming season. He would have less chance at getting on the field than he would at USU.

If Legas chooses the leave, I will feel a bad about it for a few days.

But apparently, this is the world the NCAA is comfortable with today.

I'm not sure he lands in FBS Football that is a dramatically improved situation... and with more manageable expectations.

I guess I can't blame him too much for wanting to try.

That said, in our "Brave New World", I fully expect the gloves will be coming off pretty quickly when it comes to fan criticism and the public bemoaning player efforts/decision making and coaching decisions.

In short, MOST OF THE THINGS THAT ENDEARED me to College Football as opposed to the NFL are pretty much "kaput".

I agree with most of what you said, but I think Blake was right to call the fans out after the Weber State game. People were hanging over the rails screaming at the players and then singling out Logan Bonner and booing him. After listening to Blake say his piece on the radio, I 100% think he made the right call to call those fans out.

I love being an Aggie fan, but sometimes our fan base gets entitled to think we can treat players like garbage even though we can't even sell out a 25K stadium for a year. Then shortly after, said fans wonder why those players leave in the transfer portal. You can't have it both ways. If you can't treat the players with respect and give them something to play for, then don't get mad at them when they hit the portal. (Not saying this is the only reason players transfer, but it definitely can play a role)

And certainly, don't get mad at the coach when he calls you out for it.

So, in the age of NIL, will it be surprising if some fans provide more outspoken criticism?

I mean, this is what the players asked for..., right?

The reality is that everything is never going to break only in the favor of the player(s). There will also be some pushback. That is just how the world works.

That’s where I’m going to disagree. He was 100% wrong to call the fans out. They weren’t booing Bonner, they were booing him and he should have known it and owned his failure as a coach that day. He not only got his @ss whooped by an FCS team at home, but he failed to protect a kid that couldn’t even protect himself on the field. How many RPOs did we run that day with a one-legged QB? All Hill did was attack the mesh point all game long and it was over. Pretty simple and frustrating to watch. Everyone in the stadium knew Bonner was done and yet we trotted him out there time and time again. Only a handful of games have been worse for us. Bonner literally had a QBR of 1.0 in that game and threw 3 picks. I’m sure coach went back and watched the film and coached Coop up real hard on that one for turning the ball over once when he got in the game. Kid had to learn to protect the ball and all.

I can get over the coach being angry and calling it out at the moment, but he should have walked it back and made amends with the fans, but instead he doubled down on it in the following weeks. He never accepts responsibility. Ever. But that’s okay, the QB was on a short leash after that and it then the OC’s call after that.

Fans don’t go to games looking to boo their team, and I haven’t seen that out of our fans very often over the years.

Legas leaving is 100% on BA and could be seen a mile away. I don’t know why he bothered coming back in the first place, but his loyalty and competitiveness are admirable. That being said, the rest of these transfers are just madness and I don’t even know how you begin to deal with that as a coach. This is so broken.

So, what you are saying is that Blake misunderstood the booing when he put Bonner in? The fans weren't booing Bonner, they were booing him? Correct? Well, if that's the case, then I can see understand why Blake got the wrong impression. He thought a line was crossed and he called it out. When he explained his side of the story on the radio, it should have shown why both sides were justified in their actions.

With that said, that still doesn't explain the fans who were hanging over the rails screaming at our players. That behavior also crosses the line and most programs would have revoked the season passes of those fans. I don't mind Blake calling that out either.

Except the problem isn't that the Blake didn't get mad at the fans for booing him or booing the performance of the team. He called out the fans who he felt crossed a line. He felt that Bonner getting singled out (which I'm being told was not what the fans were intending), and having fans hang over the railings and berate our players was unacceptable behavior from fans. As frustrating as the game was, he's not wrong.

To use your analogy of having an uncomfortable week at work when you screw up, I'll put it a different way. If you are a manager or small business owner in a competitive labor market, if you feel comfortable singling out employees and berating them in an inappropriate way, chances our they are going to find another job and you are going to be stuck having to hire someone else and slow down production in the meantime. A wise boss would find a smarter way to get his point across, hold people accountable, but still maintain a healthy work environment.

I hear what you're saying, but leverage also plays a role in life. And as a fan base/program, we have NO leverage in this regard. We don't pay as much as the big programs. We don't have the P5 Status. And although we've done a commendable job with the resources we have, we can't compete with the other schools in these days of unlimited transfers and NIL.

We as a fan base need to be a reason why our players WANT to stay here. That might mean hold off on booing players. That might mean leaving the game before booing the team. That might mean holding off on our frustrations until we log on to USUFANS.

I know that a lot of people on here are going to disagree with that, but that's the world we live in right now with NIL and the transfer portal.

Someone better tell The Hurd that hanging over the railings and berating players is worthy of expulsion from the Spectrum.

I watched on television as Tim Tebow, Urban Meyer and company, get booed at home during a pi$$ poor performance just one year removed from a national championship year while Tebow was the reigning Heisman Trophy winner.

Fans have always booed and yelled at players and coaches when they play and coach poorly. It isn't just a USU thingy, it's a sports thingy and I would bet my mortgage that what happened at the Maverick that night is pretty normal across the country, especially in the SEC or one of the Big "whatever" conferences.

These players are professionals now. Along with an education and housing, they are being paid to play. With that pay comes expectations. They need to learn to buck up and take the criticism and if that criticism forces them to leave, they are in for a rude awakening because it will happen somewhere else if they shyt the bed.
