Been awfully quiet on that front. Anyone in the know have an idea of candidates besides Bovee?

They sent me something called a “Cease and Desist” I assume it means they want me to cease my applications because I’ve already got the job.

Glad they're doing a national search. Hopefully some great candidates apply. Bovee is just an average candidate.

From an outside perspective looking in, Bovee seems like the guy. Did good things at Weber, some of which I hoped would happen here at USU (mostly looking at Jay Hill). Also his interviews are great. Also, not looking forward to an outside hire who really doesn’t care about USU outside of his professional life, leading to debacles like Hartwell’s thing with the women’s hoops coach, or Barnes being fiscally irresponsible.

What he did at Weber State is 100% irrelevant. He's been here what? 4 years or so? Weber State is in the rearview mirror.

It’s literally the only thing that’s relevant to outsiders. You obviously know things that have caused to you not like the guy, but most of us have no idea what those things are. You don’t tell us, probably because you can’t, which is understandable. But what else are most of us supposed to go on besides a vague comment here and there?

What he did at Weber is absolutely relevant. What he has done here is relevant. I don't have anything to complain about what he has done here. Pretty happy with the basketball hire. I don't know if he is the best candidate, as I don't know who the others are, but I will be happy with him if he is the choice

Not having a dog in the fight and just being a fan, not an alum, I think Bovee has done a great job in hiss 8 month interview, in particular the Sorinkle hire.

Bovee may suck. I don’t know. What I do know is that there will not be another candidate that has his level of love for Utah State. It’s deep. I know this isn’t everything but how can it not be looked at as a positive? What I don’t get is that it feels some people think he’s not “big time enough” not having “national exposure”. I just don’t understand. I wish those that don’t like him would give some reason. I have known Jerry for 30 years. I loved the fact he was sitting with the fans at the MW tournament and not in some luxury suite. He wanted Utah State to win as much as anyone there and not because he is the Associate AD, but because he LOVES Utah State. How can this be viewed as anything but positive? He wants what is best for Utah state. Those with knowledge please explain your reasoning for not liking him. I’m open to facts not opinions.

I think some of the reticence is the memory of Rance Pugmire. He was internal, and really turned out to be little more than a placeholder.

From what I have seen from Bovee, he is no Rance.

He seems to have a vision and to be well connected. He was not afraid to go to the final four and talk to anybody who was interested. From what we hear, he talked to some big names, but ended up with a guy who appears to be what we would hope for.

I don’t know him other than what you guys have said about him on the board, but I think he would do well.

I haven't heard anything in awhile, but the last thing I heard Bovee was not near the top of the list. It could be because they are working through outside names and Bovee may ascend the list as national names fail to materialize or disappoint, but based on what I know to this point, it won't be Bovee. Importantly, the new President is said to want her own person in that job and not a holdover. I don't think she is particularly involved in athletics so she will probably want someone she can trust that shares her philosophy and then not deal with it after that.

I have heard Scott Garrett at Cleveland State was impressing, Leon Jackson III is a real candidate, and someone at a Pac 12 school (can't remember the name) was involved. Again, this was awhile ago and things may have changed so take it FWIW.

Those in the know of the details of the last ADs departure have few nice things to say about Bovee. I guess something similar happened at Weber before.

Who knows if it is true, but Bovee does have a few not too fond of him in the AD and influential people outside it as well.

From my vantage point he appears to have done an excellent job as interim AD but the devil is in the details and most of us are not privy to said details.

From a purely external perspective, Bovee seems to be doing a decent job of holding things together. I don't believe there is really any doubt how he feels about USU and likely would stay around for awhile if hired as the AD.

However, the devil is in the details that most of us are not aware of. What is his vision for USU moving forward? How is he viewed by other members of the AD's office? What do coaches, players, and team staff think of him? How well is he liked by the senior administrators? Does he interact well with donors and alumni? Can he build beneficial relationships with former athletes to maintain a connection with USU that does not entirely depend on their donations? Does he command respect from peer institutions? Can he get a seat at the table of NCAA and other external committees? What kind of network does he have to recruit head coaches? Does he have the fortitude to make the tough calls and fire coaches?

At the end of the day, USU is doing the right thing by conducting a national search. Maybe Bovee gets the job and maybe he doesn't. Either way, I expect USU to conduct a thorough search to land the best person possible to help move USU forward.

If it doesn't end of being Bovee, it should not come as a surprise to anyone if Bovee moves on elsewhere - either on his own accord or quietly being asked to move on by the new AD.
