New Reality: Portal+NIL=Player Exodus
The new reality for G5 teams like USU is that we are going to lose a lot of our best players every year. This is a direct result of the ability to transfer without penalty and the ever-increasing NIL opportunity at bigger schools.
I've read a lot of tweets and posts about coaching issues, toxic locker room, fan interaction, and other "this isn't all about NIL" issues. But those things have ALWAYS existed and we've managed to hold onto good players. That is no longer the case. The fact that players no longer have to sit a year and can immediately land and play at a bigger program and/or earn money (maybe significant money) means we are going to lose a large number of our best players each year. It is a fact.
I'm not sure there is much we can do. I honestly feel like the answer is to shift recruiting focus almost entirely to the transfer portal or JC. Pick up the P5 transfer who wasn't getting any NIL money or playing time and just needs the right opportunity to shine. It just doesn't make sense anymore to waste time and effort recruiting a Weylin Lapuaho, see him develop nicely his first year, and then leave for greener pastures.
I knew that NIL wasn't going to be great for USU, but coupled with the new transfer rule, it is exponentially worse than I had thought.

Problem is, we can’t even keep those guys. We’re losing Vaughns and Joyner too.AgMac wrote:The new reality for G5 teams like USU is that we are going to lose a lot of our best players every year. Yes, but we at least got very good contribution from them right away. I think Laupaho will be good, but he had some pretty rough games this year.2004AG wrote: ↑December 30th, 2022, 9:50 pmProblem is, we can’t even keep those guys. Re: New Reality: Portal+NIL=Player Exodus
I just heard some very disturbing information from someone very close to the program.
This is 100% about $ and nothing else.
These players that are transferring are being contacted before even putting their name in the portal and are being offered a minimum of $25K to go play elsewhere. Our coaches are doing all they can to try and keep everyone committed but we are going to continue to lose our best players. These players already have deals done before they hit the portal and there is nothing they can do about it.
We have had an epic 12 year run (or something) where we went to 10 bowl games in 12 years but I honestly fear this is the end. We just can’t simply compete with what’s being offered.
We have nothing to counter or offer to keep kids here. Nobody is willing to help with NIL $ and all of our best players will continue to get offered after having a solid year.
We are in big trouble and I honestly think this is the start of the end. I hope I am dead wrong.
This is going to get way worse….

Too dramatic. Are Wyoming, air force, sjsu, James Madison, etc spending 25k per player? What games have we been winning before that we have no chance and now we will suddenly be out gunned so bad we don't make a bowl game? Is NIL suddenly going to make it so that we can't beat byu or boise or AlabamaElkaggie wrote:I just heard some very disturbing information from someone very close to the program.

Re: New Reality: Portal+NIL=Player Exodus
How hard is it to just raise the price of advertising for NIL money. Like just charge Staker Parson more for the title of Staker Parson Stop of the Game, or CVTD for the CVTD connection of the game title, or the price of advertising for the kiss cam or flex cam or Costa Vida Wave of the game, and use that money for the players who have the ability to get deals elsewhere.
We'll never be able to pay all our starters what bigger schools do, but we will also never have 22 starters who have the ability to get deals somewhere else. Even if we can only come up with money for the 3 underclassmen we have the most desire to, at least holding on to our top three while letting our 4th, 5th and 6th best returners get away is better than letting all 6 of our top guys get away.

Re: New Reality: Portal+NIL=Player Exodus
Elk posted the first bit a of data related to this topic: $25k I’m assuming that is for a d lineman of our current caliber.
Someone just told me Cameron Rising of the U makes $1M.
So what kind of money are we looking at for USU and peers to keep our typical players? (Not Jordan Love).

Re: New Reality: Portal+NIL=Player Exodus
The University can’t pay NIL to players. It’s not going to be a part of in-game advertising. Things like the BYU Built Bar partnership are technically not allowed, but after the NCAA investigated it they threw up their hands and said we can’t stop these.GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑December 30th, 2022, 11:36 pmHow hard is it to just raise the price of advertising for NIL money. Re: New Reality: Portal+NIL=Player Exodus
Everyone knows the current system isn’t working and will need to change. When Ohio State is complaining about losing recruits because of NIL, it’s a problem for everyone else. Even if it doesn’t, we had a nice decade and have a bunch of schools in the conference facing the same issues.
College football has been in decline for a while and maybe this speeds things up.

Cause college football just seems to be getting bigger and bigger. Not butts in seats, but that's just a portion of revenue.

Re: New Reality: Portal+NIL=Player Exodus
It started with butts in the seats. ESPN going from 100 million to 80 million subscribers over the last 4 years isn’t promising. TV ratings aren’t growing for traditional TV, and Netflix and other streaming services are currently consolidating. NIL will take money from athletic departments. The TV deals are better, but that’s because Disney isn’t making as much from ESPN. Analyst are predicting Disney dumps ESPN in 2023 because it doesn’t make them enough money. Everything but TV deals looks like it will decline.trevordude wrote: ↑December 31st, 2022, 9:11 amDecline in your moral sense?Full wrote: ↑December 31st, 2022, 9:05 amEveryone knows the current system isn’t working and will need to change. $2-3M just for the football scholarship guys.
I'm afraid I'm tapped out. Who's paying that "keep up with the stench" freight?

Byron got offered a lot of money to go to TCU but hasn’t committed yet because he got offered more to go to Notre Dame….. Waylin was also telling some teammates he wasn’t coming back next year before the Alabama game in week 1. This is coming from the same reliable source that told my Byron and Daniel were leaving before the news broke, I’m pretty sure i posted something on here for proof too. Utah State is turning into a farm system for the big guys right in front of our eyes NIL needs regulated now.

When my cousin on the track team returns from his mission and rejoins the team, I'm not sure if he will complain more about how much we pay the guys we are able to hold onto with deals, or how much other schools pay the players we are unable to hold onto.
Re: New Reality: Portal+NIL=Player Exodus
What companies are paying the NIL deals for Utah and BYU?
I've seen one Utah player on a car commercial.
I know the Built Bar deal at BYU how they pay walkons the equivalent of a scholarship.
I would think these NIL guys would be on TV more. Or maybe I'm just not seeing them.

I think there's got to be some kind of requirement that you actually demonstrate you are using a player's name/image/likeness for them to actually get paid. Otherwise it's not NIL, it's just paying players.

Yeah when Al Left, I wouldn’t have been surprised if he was out. I honestly was shocked he ended up here, maybe the only spot he had locked up. Problem isn’t necessarily NIL, or the portal, exclusively. It’s the combination of both happening at the same time. I think the NCAA should get rid of the Free Transfer unless your Head coach is fired/leaves, or if you graduate. No reason to give free transfers anymore in my opinion. You go to a school like Utah State because you can start year one hoping to get poached by a bigger school for NIL? Fine, but you should lose a year of eligibility.

You may be on to something here GUS. This NIL free for all money paid for players thing is tearing up college football. Soon enough the bad elements of society will be very involved in milking these young men of their quick money. I think I can smell a cesspool in the mix.

Re: New Reality: Portal+NIL=Player Exodus
One thing that would have been funny was the kind of money that BYU would have thrown at Jake Heaps only to have it be all for not when he would get benched, and maybe the humor in that would have taken some of the hurt of losing that game. And it would have been all the harder for Heaps to pretend he was supporting the certain kid that replaced him, knowing if he loses his starting BYU QB job, his big money is gone with it.
Then again, a counterpoint is that maybe we would have prior to that game lost the kids we had who made it a game, and even put BYU in the position to pull Heaps and need a rally, and pulling Heaps would have waited for another time. Getting blown out that game would have hurt less, but there likely wouldn't have been the BYU fans storming the field ending any room they had to talk about us not being a rival. And maybe BYU doesn't even recruit the certain kid mid-mission if they had the ability to throw money at guys more proven than he was in his one year here.

Re: New Reality: Portal+NIL=Player Exodus
Nil is definitely an unfortunate factor. I mean people do leave for other reasons, sure; but it can be hard to compete with some of the NIL deals schools offer and I’m convinced a lot of them are not exactly following NIL regulations and this is detrimental to other schools who are trying to keep in line with the rules
