What we can do about transfers and probably need to do

One thing we can always do is find guys who are able to start at FCS schools as freshman or at least get some game action, maybe even guys that emerge as the top guys on their team to a point where their fans would be devastated to lose them. We probably aren't going to get guys who emerge as the top players on even the lower tier G5 schools looking to move laterally, but maybe guys who get in some times at G5 schools.

Like take in 2015, when we freaked out over our offense struggling to do anything against SUU who had 3 NFL defensive players(and had a result we would still have taken this year, another discussion for another time), if the world of transferring was like it is today back then, could have offered them and gotten them to come after their freshman year, and had them as developed seniors, as long as they didn't do enough as freshmen for Utah or BYU to want them. And the advantage is that if they did enough for us as upperclassmen for Utah or BYU to want them then, them leaving for one of those schools would have been an option only if they completed their degree here.

The thing is, let's say we sign 5 freshmen with only FCS offers, or maybe low G5 offers. 1 of them emerges as a playmaker and shows that the P5 schools should have offered him, some P5 takes him from us having a second chance. But we find 5 guys who are good enough to make it on the field for FCS schools as freshmen, get them to transfer here, and if even 1 of them emerges as a playmaker showing the P5 schools they made a mistake to pass on him, we have them locked up with their free transfer burned and get them as a developed junior and senior, unless they get their degree with eligibility left. The trick is, you have to find guys who do little enough at FCS schools as freshmen for the P5 schools to not be interested.

And bigger schools aren't going to poach our guys cause they want to, they are going to do it to replace holes left by the blue bloods higher than them taking the guys they really wanted to hold onto and are devastated to lose.
