2nd Half was way too conservative

Post by Gidbob » November 13th, 2022, 12:34 am

The offense clicked pretty well in the 1st half, but we got way too conservative in the 2nd which allowed Hawaii to make it a game. To give them some credit though, they had some really good plays to keep themselves in the game.

Bigger problem was the D getting gashed over and over again on huge run plays. Not supposed to happen.

We had 10 offensive points in the 2nd half. Trying not to lose is not a good strategy for winning.

But they had no breaks since the offense was so conservative

Curious what the time of possession was in the second half...USU couldn't have had it for more than 7 or 8 minutes, total.

Tough to not get gassed when you are on the field for 20 minutes in the half.

40 plays is too much written out offense is 3 and out.

Just to be clear I'm not taking about 3 runs when up 10 with 3:30 left. It's the right call in that situation. I'm talking everything from after the 1 offensive TD of the 2nd half to right before the pick 6.

Yep, conservatism almost lost game tonight. That goes for both the offense and the Defense. If Larsen had not got that pick 6 we would’ve lost in overtime. With six minutes left Tyler didn’t even try to get any yards and the defense started playing 10 yards off. I don’t know what the hell the coaches are thinking. The whole 4th quarter was a joke

How does he get any yards when nobody blocks!

In defense of going conservative the series to start the second half, the rain was coming down during that series giving reason to be conservative.

You could also add being conservative helped win the Aggies the game. Not putting the ball in harm's way was the difference in the game. Cooper played well and did not put the ball in precarious situations. Their last TD should also have never counted. The ball was clearly out.

That is true but it also let them back into the game. I think ideally we ought to have gone for one more score before the three and out strategy.

The change in the game plan started with just over a minute left in the first half. The Aggies got the ball on first down on their own 39 with three time outs. They made no attempt to score, and ended up using none of the time outs. They needed to gain only 30 yards to get into field goal range.

That’s what I was going to say. It started at the end of the first half. Cooper had over 200 in the first have and about half way through the 4th said he had like 250 or something. I’m probably off on the numbers but a huge difference!!

Let the kids play. Don’t be afraid to beat a team by 30!!!

They seem to have the capability to be an electric team, but for whatever reason it isn’t always there.
This weeks game ends being pretty big and I think we can win. Just need to bring that juice.

What do you mean its not supposed to happen? Seems like a key feature of Banda's defense. Get a TFL every 4th run by zone blitzing one gap and get gashed for 40 yards on the other 3 plays because the only LB who is not stunting to the wrong gap is on the wrong side of the play and easily screened by a lineman. The guess on the multiple choice test defense. Works every time.

GFA, I've noticed that someone is making loud bird calls occasionally during our road games. They are clearly audible during the broadcast.

Is it you? If so, keep it up!
