Special Teams

Post by Sl7vk » November 5th, 2022, 5:31 pm

Wins us the game. I’ll give Anderson credit for the aggressive play calling. Fake punt, fake kick (for the TD) fumble recovery on a punt.
Maybe we should have Blake call the offense?

I’m curious if the fake punt was called or if SK just read the coverage. My guess is, he just saw the poor coverage and went for it.

I was wondering the same thing.

The fake punt didn't look like it was called ... Our punter saw nothing but wide-open turf and tucked it ... it was a good decision!

can't wait to watch it again - it looked to me like he double-clutched the punt effort before committing to the tuck and run.

He saw the opening on the previous punt so he was looking for it. I suspect he and the coaches talked about it and were watching for the lazy coverage.

Steve said the play was called but he selected the route to run.

A good day out for Special Team's.

Special teams were definitely the difference yesterday. Good prep and good execution.

I notice that kind of coverage 2 or three times a game…..sometimes a few more. I used to wonder why we don’t take advantage more…..but smart opponents would expect that from us.

ON the postgame Blake said it was a called play. He did mention that Stephen has the liberty to choose which lane to run through, but it was a called play.

I think I was most impressed by the fumbled punt in the second half. SK destroyed that ball (wind helps of course) but it was a great kick over the returner's head.

I noticed on the first punt that they were dropping back everyone but two guys on the ends, I wondered why he didn't just run it the first time but he was obviously just focused on punting, but also saw what we all saw and the second time ran for it. We actually have a history of faking the punt vs New Mexico

Jaron's parents, after missing a few games his first few years when he wasn't playing as much, had a perfect record of making it to all his home and away games his last years when he was the starting punter. Except for, well as you would probably guess by me posting this, the game where he had the infamous touchdown run.

Our special teams this season are excellent! Credit where due. The debacles of the past have left me so shell shocked that I'm constantly in fear that a routine "teams" play will cost us the game. This group has won games for us.
