3rd downs

Post by DreadPirateRoberts » September 25th, 2022, 4:36 pm

I feel like we have a problem with third downs on both side of the ball. Can't seem to get a stop on 3rd down defensively and can't seem to move the chains offensively. I think if we were to clean that aspect of the game up, we will be much improved.

When we have the other team in 3rd and 8 (or longer) I have zero faith that will be able to stop them anymore.

Me too. I see "third down / Hurd down" and can't help but think, "well, here goes another 15 yrd play."

Usually a run with 4 missed arm tackles.

A QB keeper too.

That’s being generous. It is usually a run up the middle untouched for 15 yards and then a safety finally stops it. It is probably why we think we can run it up the middle on 3rd down while we are on offense. It works in practice on our own D.

I am going to preface my remark with the lack of satisfaction that this season has provided. I am in no way denying the frustration of watching the defense give up big plays on third down conversion.

However, I was stunned to see that UNLV was credited with 5 third down conversions in 16 tries. Barely a percentage point better than USU's numbers (4-13).

The numbers don't quite add up since they went for it on 4th down one time, tried two FGs, and punted 7 times (which counted the blocked kick). So there is one unconverted third down that is unaccounted.

However my question is - why did it feel that our conversion rate was so bad and theirs was so good? Because that is how it felt to me live in the stadium. Hence the Stunned reference.

I feel the same. Being at the game, it felt like they were converting all of them while we were not. Maybe because we were giving up long third down conversions at the worst times.

I felt ZERO frustration with our defense and have not since the UConn game.

Well I think several UNLV drives were extended due to penalties so it often felt like 3rd down conversions.

I am going to do in depth analysis about issues that I noticed and BA recruits vs previous coaches’ recruits later this week to give you a deeper perspective of where the team is at.
