I think Tyler might be the most average RB I’ve ever seen.

Hey at least he surpassed Makakona for number of carries! Progress.

Is he more or less average than early career LaJuan Hunt?

Indistinguishable, I'm thinking.

LaJuan played well the last few games of his career. Maybe there’s a chance!

Briggs is obviously our best back. Everyone knows it. We have a stubborn head coach who will do the opposite of what the fans and media say.

Tyler seems to stop his feet and bend over at first contact. I said it last year that he was not and is not our best back. He doesn't seem to try to power through a run, or make something out of nothing if a hole doesn't develop. He hits the back of the o-line and stops. :bangwall:

In all fairness, no head coach should make decisions based upon the wishes of the media and the fans.

He's the same running back that won us a MWC Championship last year folks. Remember that.

Didn't say he should, I said he makes decisions to spite them.

Nope. He should make the decisions based on in game performance, stats, and analytics. That's why that's all provided in the OP.

The only running back used from the pre-BA era is Makakona.

I thought Tyler had some good early game runs, but maybe I'm wrong?

Briggs had some good runs, but also had an awful false start...but hey, I think there were two on the OL and another on a WR as well. School is in full swing and the game starts to become mental as the season gets into full swing.

If you were able to include whether Briggs knows who to block on passing downs, that would also help. This is something young RB's often struggle with. Given we run the ball on 3rd and long, I guess it should matter....

There's no question Briggs is electric and he runs with a different mindset than Tyler. When he gets the ball and hits the hole he is going full speed. He gets up field in a hurry and causes defenders to take bad angles. Even though he is small, he doesn't go down easy and can even carry defenders for extra yards.

I too thought Tyler looked exceptionally quick early. I think he is a good back but sometimes his patience gets the better of him and he ends up dancing too much.

If we would run counters and attack the edges I think this could be a really good duo.

Tyler did have some good runs. I was actually very pleased to see him break it to the outside on several occasions rather than just get stopped at the LOS. In my opinion Tyler and Briggs should be getting about 45% of the snaps each and Makakona about 10%.

I'm curious if the plan was to RS Briggs and that's why he wasn't seeing a lot of snaps. Now that he's shown he's probably the best back on the team, he should be getting starter's carries.

They’re holding him out until the meat of conference play when they’ll unleash him and the full playbook.

Tucker, the offensive wizard he is, just can't find a way to get him involved.

I have been impressed with Briggs also. My question is how are his blocking skills. I have seen running backs that get
put on the field because of their blocking and pass catching skills even if they are not the best runners.. How does Briggs compare in these areas

The way Briggs just pops back up off of the turf after a play reminds me of DT last year. Just a lot of energy and spring. He may indeed have some growing pains with regards to knowing the playbook, learning to block well, and discipline, as has been said here, but whether he becomes the savior of the team this year or not, I'm sure we're all very excited about the future with him in the backfield!

I don't have a stat for how well he blocks down field, but he's very comparable to Tyler in yards per catch. He averages 11 ypc while Tyler averages 11.7. Given the fact that he averages a full 2.1 more yards per carry, and looks much more electric than Tyler when he gets the ball would make me want him running it the majority of carries. Makakona has yet to catch a pass.

But again, I'm not expert enough to look at every non running play to see how each of them block. I do know he runs the ball with more power than Tyler, often carrying tacklers with him for extra yardage, so if he's disciplined enough and knows the offense well enough, it seems like that would transfer well to blocking. But what do I know?
