Big running back
When was the last time we had a big bruiser running bag? I know a lot would say Turbin, but he wasn’t tall! How big was White? I look at BYU and they seem to always get a huge RB. Recently, Jamal Williams and now the RB they have now. Teams just don’t bring him down very easy. I think one of biggest RB we’ve had was MaCArthur Lane! I would like to see us recruit a big running back!

The best running backs are ~5'10" (give or take an inch). If you think I'm crazy, look up career rushing leaders and tell me how many in the top 25 are over 6'.
By the way, BYU's back is listed at 5'11"

You probably have a point. However Derek Henry would be a good example of a tall runningback. RB is one of those positions where strength and toughness is critical. You can have small backs that run big, big backs that run small. I don't care what they measure as much as I care how they run.

Re: Big running back
Good point. Just an example of the best running back in the league is actually tall. All I care about is how they run.brownjeans wrote: ↑October 24th, 2021, 8:33 pmThere's always examples of taller, and shorter, but the mean is ~5'10".slcagg wrote: ↑October 24th, 2021, 8:23 pmYou probably have a point. To your point typically they are around that 5’10” mark.

Re: Big running back
Good point. I’m not sure we have either. I think we have serviceable backs but that’s about it. Tyler’s our best for sure. After that nothing to write home about.brownjeans wrote: ↑October 24th, 2021, 8:33 pmThere's always examples of taller, and shorter, but the mean is ~5'10".slcagg wrote: ↑October 24th, 2021, 8:23 pmYou probably have a point. Re: Big running back
I’m extremely excited for Noa, Gentry, and Davenport in the near future. Noa is a really good power back and he has similar attributes to warren. He could get faster tho. Gentry is a good catching back and is very agile. Here’s to usu’s future

Re: Big running back
I like how hard Noah runs but he’s not very quick or elusive and not great speed. He got ran down from behind by a LB in the 3rd quarter fairly easily.Notatrueaggie wrote: ↑October 24th, 2021, 8:53 pmI’m extremely excited for Noa, Gentry, and Davenport in the near future. Gentry goes down easy. Did you notice second to last series they gave in to him 2nd and 3rd down - he literally got tackled by one hand by a guy being blocked on second down. On 3rd down he wasn’t fast enough or strong enough to get the first down. I think Noah would have got those yards.
Tyler is the best combo of speed and strength but he can’t seem to get healthy.

You mean the outlier who has no equal in regards to size and top end speed?slcagg wrote:You probably have a point. However Derek Henry would be a good example of a tall runningback. Re: Big running back
Well he is tall isn’t he and he is the best back in the league and will likely go down as one of the best. You know the funny thing about Henry when he was coming out of hs a lot of college coaches recruited him as a linebacker.TheAKAggie wrote: ↑October 24th, 2021, 9:14 pmYou mean the outlier who has no equal in regards to size and top end speed?slcagg wrote:You probably have a point. Btw see my other responses. To brownjeans think I’m pretty fair in my comments.

Re: Big running back
By Davenport I think you mean Briggs. Davenport is next years starting qb. But I agree we have a good young group of running backs!Notatrueaggie wrote: ↑October 24th, 2021, 8:53 pmI’m extremely excited for Noa, Gentry, and Davenport in the near future. Re: Big running back
Just like how a qb can't be taught to throw other than ironing out a few wrinkles - either he can or he can't, a RB can't be taught to run 'behind' his pads. He has the natural lean or he doesn't. Shorter RB's, in the 5'10 range you mention, seem to do it more naturally. There are exceptions such as Derrick Henry, Eddie George and even Jim Brown who are all in the 6'2 or 6'3 range, but they ran behind their pads too.brownjeans wrote: ↑October 24th, 2021, 8:19 pmThe best running backs are ~5'10" (give or take an inch). The classic example is Earl Campbell at 5'11.

I think our running backs would show better if our offensive line also showed better.

And 6'3" guys that move and run like Henry end up at Alabama not Utah State.slcagg wrote: ↑October 24th, 2021, 8:23 pmYou probably have a point. Re: Big running back
I think Noa is our best short yardage running back. He can pound out a couple of yards in instances where our other two backs get stopped.

Re: Big running back
He can also run through tackles at the 2nd level and pick up 8-10 fairly consistently. He also doesn't take chances and get caught deep for big losses. In 63 carries he only has 11 lost yards. That's 0.17 lost ypc against 4.34 gained ypc. When the losses per carry are such small fractions, you know you've got an efficient back.

Re: Big running back
Gentry needs to put on 20 pounds while keeping his speed. If he can do that, he should be a lot better at running through tackles. He's only listed at 190 this year (5'10).
For comparison, Tyler is 5'8, 210, Noa is 5'8, 200, Makakona is 5'10, 220.

Our most recent BIG running back who ran like a big punishing back was Nick Vigil.

Re: Big running back
It's a good question. With a line that collapses as much as ours does, having a bruising running back helps. Small, twitchy backs seem to be better suited for o-lines that can create and hold lanes for 1-2 seconds.
