UNLV, Our Next Opponent, Calling It: Ags by 8

Post by USU78 » October 5th, 2021, 4:19 pm

https://lvchronicle.com/unlv/unlv-football-rock-bottom/

Scoring: ((29.2+36.4)/2)= 32.8) > ((18.6+30.6)/2)=24.6)

USU wins 33-25; USU by 8

Rushing: ((175.2+151.6)/2=163.4) > ((102.8+204)/2)=153.9)
Passing: ((318.6+302.8/2)=315.7) > ((179.6+259.8)/2=219.7
Total: 479.1 > 373.6

USU outgains 480-374*

I pretty much trust the passing numbers here, but I think our defense actually keeps the Rebs' rushing game bottled up. I mean, seriously, we have faced three very good rushing games in Boazy, Air Force, and the stench and they make the defense look far worse than it actually is. Those numbers from those games will matter less and less as the season goes on.

*My father, the HS football coach who used to help out as an unpaid assistant for special teams at USU in the '60s, used to say that the first TD in a game will cost you 100 yards of total offense, but that every TD after that costs you 50 yards. We are a >100 yard favorite here, and that means the Ags should be expected to win by two TDs. In a game where USU is an 8 pt favorite, bet on USU to cover the spread.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Scary game...a team with nothing to lose and our questionable defense...here's hoping!

Not to mention that their past two games were close losses against tough competition. I think they found their QB against Fresno. We will need to throw everything we have at them to ensure a victory. Definitely not the guaranteed win I was thinking earlier in the season.

Fascinating read. It’s kind of incredible UNLV has been as consistently bad as they’ve been in football. I hope they start winning only after playing USU.

While they have not won a game, their last 2 games on the road against good opponents they fared quite well. This game is super scary for me. With our questionable defense and our offense that has not fared well the last 2 games I think this has the makings of a very tough game. The last thing you want to do is to keep it close and give UNLV confidence. This game is for sure not a gimme.

It shouldn't be a scary game. They are a bad winless team. If we are a good team, we easily take care of business. In 2017 we comfortably beat them in their house and were a 6-7 team; inferior to what we likely are this year. That UNLV team was a mediocre 5-7 team; superior than what they are this year. If this is a game we struggle in, I will have to apologize to all the doom and gloomers on here who have acted like losing in a competitive game to a ranked team is the end of the world.

Looks like the tickets to this game aren't on Utah State's site.

Here's UNLV's site including the seating chart. The north and west sides seem to have more visiting fans. The east side has more home fans. For you high-rollers, I think the club seats (C134) come with access to a really nice club with catered food.

I did notice tickets are going cheaper on stubhub/vivid seats than buying them directly off of UNLVs website.

Yes the Ags will need to come fired up and ready to play! Getting healthy will definitely help, but I hope this game is the start of another run.

So which side of the stadium is the USU football team on? (East vs. West)

East side (Red Rock) is primarily UNLV fans (I'll be sitting among them with my Aggie gear) and West Side is visitors (1-15 and strip side).

Rebel fans note that UNLV opponents are 21-5 conoared to USU opponents 15-9, that they have "found" a QB and played two good opponents tough on the road.

Would be surprised if our coaches and players overlook this game. Not after two losses.

Look at who they played and what the scores were. We've been playing tougher teams and we've been playing well. Just looking at Air Force, aside from our win they have only been allowing roughly 10 points per game over 4 wins. We hung 49 points on them.

Who will be hungrier? The team that's played tough but lost every game or the team that has three improbable wins (many had us losing to North Dakota) under their belt but has lost the last two games that were winnable?

With our defense, most of the teams on the remaining schedule could beat us. I hope we are not overlooking UNLV.

That said, I think we should win at least 3 of 7 and go to a bowl game. I really don't think UNM and NMSU are capable of beating us. UNLV, CSU, Hawaii, Wyoming, and SJSU are all no worse than coinflips.

ESPN matchup predictor (which has a good track record of correctly picking winners of games we play in) has us losing to Wyoming and SJSU and winning the rest. I currently think matchup predictor is overrating SJSU and Wyoming and underrating Hawaii, but we'll see.

Wyoming v. AFA will be illuminating this weekend. That should give us a good idea of where we stack up against Wyoming.

Playing Hawaii at home will help us a lot, they perform much better on the Island as you can see from their scores. CSU is also at home, our one away game that should worry us is at SJSU. I'm glad we don't have to play Fresno this year, well unless we can manage to win the Mnt. Div., which is still a possibility.

So based on the latest info I've received, the "WEST" side (Red Rocks) is the visiting team side for the UNLV game. So USU should be on the West side of the Stadium. West side = red rocks side.

"EAST" side, by the strip, is UNLV's home side. East side = I-15 and strip side.

@ProvoAggie,

Yes - my info shows VIP C112 on the "east" side of the stadium (east side closest to the strip) as UNLV, and VIP C134 on the "west" side of the stadium (west side closest to red rocks) as USU.

UNLV opponent record is 21-5. Granted, 5 of those wins were against UNLV, LOL. They've lost to a pretty distinguished group of schools. Don't let this fool you into thinking they are horrible in any way. They were in every game except ASU and Iowa St.

I think a lot of us got a bad view of both UNLV and Colorado St after week 1 due to their FCS losses, but those teams (Eastern Washington and South Dakota State) are both very good. South Dakota St is 54th and Eastern Washington is 98th in the Sagarin ratings, which includes both FBS and FCS schools. I think it's time we forget a week one loss to some FCS teams that would compete very well in the MWC.

CSU followed that up with a loss to Vanderbilt. UNLV is one of three winless FBS teams, so they’ll be desperate for a win. They join UConn and Arizona, which is not a group you want to be in. If I was a betting man, I would bet USU to cover the spread. USU is 2-2 against the four most difficult opponents on the schedule. I think people are overlooking USU again, and it’s easy because two games in a row have been losses. If USU was overconfident and injured I would be more concerned about this game. USU should win, and could roll if they get an early lead and UNLV’s confidence falters like a team that hasn’t won a game since 2019.

I think the key is to start fast. That is a big if since in 4/5 of the games this year the defense has really struggled in the first quarter. UNLV will be hungry, but there is a reason they are 0/5, not saying they are not capable of winning, but they are no world beaters. If the Aggies come out focused on offense and limit the mental breakdowns on defense I see the Aggies covering. If the Aggies come out slow and allow UNLV to get a lead in the first and 2nd quarters this will be a dog fight. Getting a 10-14 point lead in the first quarter will really affect UNLV's confidence.

This thread reminds me a lot of the threads prior to the North Dakota game. My opinion is the same about this game as it was about that game.

Of course they are capable of beating USU. That doesn't mean it's going to happen.

This is a game that we shouldn't have to worry about too much as a fan. The reason we are worried is because this team still has some fatal flaws that can be exploited by bad teams. If a lot goes wrong, we can definitely lose this game.
