What happened to AJ Vongphachanh?
Is he hurt? Doghouse? Grades? Something else?
He looked like a rising start in last season's miserable performance, but I'm not sure I have seen him on the field yet this year.

Re: What happened to AJ Vongphachanh?
He is splitting time with Kevin metz. However I agree I expected him to grab that second linebacker position and be the main man next to Justin rice this year.

I've wondered myself if he's hurt after splitting so many reps with Meitzenheimer. AJV has played plenty though and has 13 tackles on the season.

They were playing him a lot in the AFA game with Metz and Rice on the field at the same time.

AJ has been playing a ton. You may have missed him due to his number change. He is now #10.

Re: What happened to AJ Vongphachanh?
Was he playing outside. I only saw him in on a play once in the second half and thought he was coming from the inside. However, when Metz blew that long TD they moved Gilliam inside for the next couple of series. I thought Gilliam would have stayed outside and AJV inside. I can't understand what issues he is having that he can't beat out Metz or that Gilliam is a better option at ILB?

Re: What happened to AJ Vongphachanh?
I don't think it's an issue of beating out Metz. They were playing 3 LBs at a time in the AFA game. And the rotation seems to be mostly 4LBs (Rice, AJV, Metz and Gilliam). Who else would you play in that 4-man rotation? Maile??hickaggie wrote: ↑September 23rd, 2021, 10:06 amWas he playing outside. I've attached a photo from the first series of the game. You can see AJV starting on the far side of the field.

Re: What happened to AJ Vongphachanh?
I think generally we play the two true linebackers at one time and line up cash or ajani as the specialty linebacker if you will. Air Force and their style of play is more of the exception to our standard sets.AggieFBObsession wrote: ↑September 23rd, 2021, 10:16 amI don't think it's an issue of beating out Metz. AJ had 7 tackles against AFA. That seems like a solid contribution to me.

Re: What happened to AJ Vongphachanh?
Yeah they definitely were playing in an interesting way with AJV on the line in almost the old 5 2 4 look. No wonder AFA decided just to run counter through A gap the whole second half. It basically took 7-8 guys out of the play with as fast as it developed and half the time the MLB were following the decoy and making it 9 guys out of the play.
That we couldn't stop pitch with a 5 man front in the 1st half is mindblowing.

Especially when we had no DBs to contain the edges.hickaggie wrote: ↑September 23rd, 2021, 10:41 amYeah they definitely were playing in an interesting way with AJV on the line in almost the old 5 2 4 look. Re: What happened to AJ Vongphachanh?
I don't like the look of that front for the option at all come to think of it. I know AFA was playing their WOs tight on that particular play but assuming Heninger and AJV had QB that isn't the angle I would have had them in what is essentially a five man front. We already had 2 ILB so they should have been taken another step outside to cut off the QB at a better angle and force an earlier pitch.AggieFBObsession wrote: ↑September 23rd, 2021, 10:42 amEspecially when we had no DBs to contain the edges.hickaggie wrote: ↑September 23rd, 2021, 10:41 amYeah they definitely were playing in an interesting way with AJV on the line in almost the old 5 2 4 look. Everything about a front 7 on D comes down to the leverage and angles you are taking and the position of both Heninger and AJV means they have to come straight downfield or at outside angle to the QB option as he is running outside 3-4 yards deep in the backfield rather than a direct line in off the edge. Its a lot easier to deal with a pitch that occurs inside the tackle box because it allows better angles for the ILB, the corner, and the safety.
Assuming they were supposed to help with pitch and MLB on their side had QB key they could have hit the pitch man before he got the ball every play if they stepped out a yard and that's not a bad way to play pitch as bad as our safeties and corners have played it. There seems no reason to run that tight as it destroyed their angles while still making them useless on the A gap runs.
It seems like that the way they lined was exactly the way AFA hoped they would in that formation.

Re: What happened to AJ Vongphachanh?
Hit the QB. Every down. Every situation. Hit him and hit him and hit him. Put him on the ground. Leave him there. Don't waste energy helping him up. You put him down there for a reason. And just hit him and hit him and hit him.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Hope he's learning from a master. He needs to become Rice 2.0. Plenty of tackles to go around.

Totally agree with your comment 78. Pound and hammer away until prior to each play the Q B is looking even before he hands the ball off.

Re: What happened to AJ Vongphachanh?
Just hit the Q B before the play is over. #49 enjoyed an officials waver of a personal foul and possible game ejection with his late play pounding of Bonner.

Re: What happened to AJ Vongphachanh?
Yes, you hit the QB.
There are several that can happen you hit the QB in the option offense.
A) The QB is going to hate it and get hammered.
B) You make them commit earlier than they want to
C) You potentially rush their pitch and could get a turnover.
D) you take the indecisiveness of whomever is playing the end. Sometimes they freeze and don't play anyone.

and his body looks like a LB now too versus before he looked more like a lineman.
