Defense

Post by Elkaggie » September 19th, 2021, 1:28 pm

Honestly, what can we do to improve our defense? We all thought the defense would be the strength of this team but after 3 games they have shown to be mediocre at best. We have more speed in spots but still seem to lack speed and strength in most positions. Is it scheme?

Lack of depth. Thank the previous staff for their great work. TIC.

I dunno about this. Teams are killing our Defense more in the first half than late in the game.

Defense is doing great.

Prior to the AFA game they were conceding 375 yards per game and 22 ponts per game. Also they’ve been getting a fair amount of turnovers. Bandas philosophy is bend but don’t break, disrupt, get turn overs and even get some defensive scores.

AFA game is an aberration. Lots of reasons for that but I think you’ll see a very different result next week against the Donkies.

We just need to limit explosive plays and we’ll be fine

I thought the defense at WSU was pretty lights out other than 64 yard long run. The first quarter against ND was bad, but the last 3 quarters was awesome. AF well that is another story, but they got it done in the 4th quarter with some solid stops and then the awesome fumble. We will see how they fare this week.

You don't know? :headscratch: When was the last time you looked at our depth chart? Haven't you been reading aggies22's post during the entire summer? Let me give you a hint. Start by looking at linebacker. Besides the best player on our team, Justin Rice, who else do you see in that depth chart at linebacker who is a well renowned player at that position? What is their size compared to the typical college linebacker? Look down the depth chart and count how many guys we can depend on. Not enough. Not even close. We're very lucky to have what we have thanks to the current staff. However you only get so many scholarships and it takes years sometimes to get these guys ready to play significant minutes.

I think AJ will be as good a player as Woodward or Rice one day.

Our secondary needs to quit napping in the first quarter. They played okay in the second halves but way too many mistakes early.

Agreed, he's next-in-line in a series of NFL-caliber LB's coming out of USU.

AJ is an excellent player but Justin Rice and AJ can't cover the entire field for four quarters against a defense that doesn't run more than 1 WR on most sets.

Two names I’ve been thinking about — Jaymason Willingham and Simon Thompson.

Both came in with some fanfare, neither has really made an impact. Recruiting whiffs at this point?

We're also thin in the secondary. This is something else we talked a lot about during the summer. Why don't people remember those discussions here on this board?

Really?! ND moved the ball up and down the field most of the game just couldn’t get it in the end zone. They had 440 yards of offense. 375 through the air. I know ND is a good fcs team but other teams will watch film and unless we figure out how to improve on offense a lot we will continue to put way too much pressure on our offense. Our secondary has been exposed.

Really?? they scored TDs on their first 3 drives 71,75,59 =205 yards
they had like 10 more drives totaling 234 yards, only 2 over 25 yards and only 2 into UState territory (the interception and the final drive which died at the 41 with the clock's expiration)

Defense has some big issues, especially the secondary. CB's are bad at getting off blocks, safeties get lost sometimes. I remember last year we played out CB's 10 yards of the WRs, it's a cautious approach
