Justin Rice Offensive Sets
Justin Rice Offensive Sets
I feel like some 3rd down/goal line plays for Justin Rice like they used to do for Nick Vigil would be pretty fun. Thoughts?
There’s plenty more gifted minds than mine on this board who could give far more informed opinions.
I just felt like we left points on the board with UND.

Re: Justin Rice Offensive Sets
Where specifically did we leave points on the board against UND? That is, which phase or aspect of our offense didn’t seem to have sufficient strength to compete?apo wrote: ↑September 15th, 2021, 5:55 pmI feel like some 3rd down/goal line plays for Justin Rice like they used to do for Nick Vigil would be pretty fun. Rice is simply too valuable defensively to risk a minimal amount of help offensively in random situations.

There were multiple but the most poignant being when we got to the UND 2 yard line twice and came away with zero points.YoungBloodAggie wrote: ↑September 15th, 2021, 6:22 pmWhere specifically did we leave points on the board against UND? Re: Justin Rice Offensive Sets
Although Justin did start out at Fresno State as a running back. I think that he should stick with line backing. We have plenty of capable backs that should be able to handle the load.apo wrote: ↑September 15th, 2021, 5:55 pmI feel like some 3rd down/goal line plays for Justin Rice like they used to do for Nick Vigil would be pretty fun. Re: Justin Rice Offensive Sets
Nick was the 5A MVP at Fremont his senior season. It may have been the highest classification in Utah at the time.

It's not out of the realm. Facrell was successful doing a few TE sets. Seriously though, how good a RB would Wagner have been?

Also, we need to see more Peasly on the field period. He's one of our best athletes.

I kept commenting from my seat in the stands, about how the speed of Peasley would have been able to take advantage of some of the running opportunities that Logan Bonner wasn't able to produce out of. As soon as Peasley enters the game, he takes his first carry 60 yards to the house.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑September 16th, 2021, 1:06 amAlso, we need to see more Peasly on the field period. I don’t know that Wells put in Vigil just to be fun and exciting. I think he did so more out of desperation to beat BYU. It worked. I’m glad it did.
I’m also glad we aren’t trying to save a season early like Wells was.

Re: Justin Rice Offensive Sets
Except we have running backs over this year, beefy ones to boot. That year we were thin and so were they.apo wrote:I feel like some 3rd down/goal line plays for Justin Rice like they used to do for Nick Vigil would be pretty fun. Thoughts?

Re: Justin Rice Offensive Sets
Our RB's were average at best for about five years after the Turbin/Kerwynn/M. Smith era. Wells used Vigil because he was the best RB on the team as well as being the best LB.
There isn't a need for Rice to play RB. We have good RB's right now and Rice wouldn't crack the three back rotation we have.

Re: Justin Rice Offensive Sets
Oh, don't get me wrong, I liked JD. He was instrumental as we went through three QB's in 2013 and had a great Poinsietta Bowl. He just wasn't as explosive as Turbin/KW/Smith but yes, not a below average back.Hoot wrote: ↑September 16th, 2021, 2:14 pmJoey D was a stud! Re: Justin Rice Offensive Sets
I hope we do anything and everything to beat byu! If it means running offensive sets with 3 QB's, using a DT as a RB, on-side kick on every kickoff, going for it on 4 down in our own endzone, whatever - DO IT!!Imakeitrain wrote: ↑September 16th, 2021, 6:38 amI don’t know that Wells put in Vigil just to be fun and exciting. BTW, I'm beyond excited that the byu team will be next to our student section this year. MAKE IT COUNT!!
