Does a Scarver kick return for a TD count?

Re: What will be the first offensive play?
Just please be anything but a slow developing read option hand off up the center for a 1 yard gain.

Re: What will be the first offensive play?
If it were me I think I would run that in a play action and try to freeze the safety and isolate Scarver on a post. The easiest route for him to catch. I suspect it will be an RPO handoff though. Please no bubble screen.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑August 30th, 2021, 8:37 amJust please be anything but a slow developing read option hand off up the center for a 1 yard gain.

Re: What will be the first offensive play?
That is 100% the play I would call first. The DB’s won’t be expecting Scarver’s straight line speed.hickaggie wrote: ↑August 30th, 2021, 8:45 amIf it were me I think I would run that in a play action and try to freeze the safety and isolate Scarver on a post. I've seen them run bubble screens but Coach Cefalo has them blocking a helluva lot better than they had the last two years.hickaggie wrote: ↑August 30th, 2021, 8:45 amIf it were me I think I would run that in a play action and try to freeze the safety and isolate Scarver on a post. Re: What will be the first offensive play?
I just remember when the Zoobs pretty much knew Wells would call that and/or Chuckie gave it away on the 1st play in the game he was hurt and their OLB timed the snap count jumped it for pick 6. Its not a bad play at all if blocked and executed right. But its not a play to start a game off with. You want to set it up a bit IMHO.aggies22 wrote: ↑August 30th, 2021, 9:21 amI've seen them run bubble screens but Coach Cefalo has them blocking a helluva lot better than they had the last two years.hickaggie wrote: ↑August 30th, 2021, 8:45 amIf it were me I think I would run that in a play action and try to freeze the safety and isolate Scarver on a post. If it's Bonner, I think they run a slant to a slot receiver.
If it's Peasley, I think they run rpo handoff or qb keeper

Re: What will be the first offensive play?
I have no inside info, I predict Peasley will get the first group of downs, and then Logan B. will get the second set of downs unless there's an exploit matchup that was missed and becomes apparent, and a TD is scored. I was curious if screen passes will be part of this offensive set of plays.
I hope they use the screen game sparingly. It just seems like it's only effective against teams that are over-stacking the box and blitz very often. So we'll see.
I hope the qb's can read the defense sets, and they run a lot of play-action and can take advantage of some blocking schemes to get some runs going.
I vote, that the first play we see is an option read with Peasley, kinda like the old Chuckie days. We'll see how good he is at selling the run.

Re: What will be the first offensive play?
I remember there was a lot of discussion on this board in 2005 about the first play under new coach Brent Guy in a road game against the Utes. No one guessed delay of game. In hindsight, it should have been obvious.

Re: What will be the first offensive play?
Anything but a "QB draw" whether it be by design or not. I thought we were better than this as a program ever since LJ3 and then last year happened. Once or twice a game is acceptable when plays break down- 2-3 times ever 4 downs is a disaster.

Re: What will be the first offensive play?
And then the first play of 2006 at home against said Utes was a screen pass jumped by the defense and returned 20 yards for a touchdown.
First play of 2021 will be Gentry off tackle for 3.

Re: What will be the first offensive play?
That's what I call fast pace offense. I thought this was a Coach Guy strategy as well. I think I remember in all seriousness punting on 3rd down, maybe more than once. It was especially effective because we had the LJ3 show who was the starting QB and punter.

Re: What will be the first offensive play?
It is so effective that every college team spent extra time in fall camp giving their starting QB reps punting the ball. You are going to see this a lot in college games across the country this season. By next season, it should be a major factor in the NFL.CaptainChaos wrote: ↑August 30th, 2021, 2:22 pmThat's what I call fast pace offense. I thought this was a Coach Guy strategy as well. Re: What will be the first offensive play?
What it will be: a slow developing run play for a one yard gain.
What it should be: a bomb to Scarver off of play action.
I don’t so much care about win or loss against WSU, I just want to see a competent, well-coached team on both sides of the ball that I can have faith in to compete in MW play.
We were impotent on offense last year and completely lost on defense.

Attack punt, of course!! haha
I bet a run up the middle (between the guards). We are going to come out with a run focused game.

Re: What will be the first offensive play?
I've always liked when our receivers could block. I seem to remember Matt Austin being able to land a few key blocks that would help people like Kerwynn or Joe Hill get massive plays. I also seem to remember Eric Moats being a good blocker, same with Stanley Morrison (although he was a RB)... maybe I'm misremembering and focusing too much on that time Turbin took it to the house first play against BYU. That play doesn't happen without Moats and Morrison. I just seem to get hyped up about key WR/RB blocks that stand out more than anything else.aggies22 wrote: ↑August 30th, 2021, 9:21 amI've seen them run bubble screens but Coach Cefalo has them blocking a helluva lot better than they had the last two years.hickaggie wrote: ↑August 30th, 2021, 8:45 amIf it were me I think I would run that in a play action and try to freeze the safety and isolate Scarver on a post. Re: What will be the first offensive play?
I thought Morrison was a WR that sometimes threw the ball after catching a lateral?

Re: What will be the first offensive play?
Morrison was a jack of all trades that primarily lined up at WR, but was often a part of trick plays and occasionally ran the wild cat.BigBlueDart wrote: ↑August 30th, 2021, 5:12 pmI thought Morrison was a WR that sometimes threw the ball after catching a lateral?
I remember one game when our QB's were hurt or something and he played like a whole half at QB/Wildcat.

All I know is that our starting QB is a mystery to WSU and we will ambush them in Pullman. I hope.

Post route to vanluewen (sp?) for a 1st down.
I have no idea really the difference in where he plays as a part of the receivers but he's shown out he's money let's call his name on the first play.
In reality? 12 men on the field penalty

Didn't we have a delay of game penalty on the first play of the game one time in the Guy years?crazywookie wrote: ↑August 31st, 2021, 8:55 amPost route to vanluewen (sp?) for a 1st down.

Big pass play called back because of some bogus penalty.

From your mouth ...
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
