USU to the Big 12

Post by OrangeCountyAggie » July 22nd, 2021, 1:14 pm

Just putting the notion out into the universe. If the Big 12 is looking to add more teams, USU should (like a lot of schools) lobby as hard as possible for inclusion (with or without Texas & OU).

Although the thought sickens me, maybe partnering with byu as a duo entry into the league could make some sense. I get it's unlikely to happen but hell, Washington State, Vanderbilt, Iowa State, Northwestern, etc. got lucky once; why not USU?

It was a different time when Washington State and Vandy got in their conferences. It was before there was such a thing as P5 of G5. Vandy is a founding member of the SEC, USU was a founding member of the Skyline Conference with Utah, BYU, Colorado, etc., but Vandy didn't have enough people against them pushing them out like we did when the Skyline Conference broke up.

USU should certainly make any and every call to improve their place, but with a foot firmly planted in the reality of who we are.

Let me give a hypothetical on how this could play out:

Texas + OU to the SEC. The ACC adds Notre Dame and West Virginia. The Pac-12 decides to stay in the Pacific/Mountian time zone and adds SDSU, UNLV, Fresno (or Nevada), and Hawaii

The Big 12, takes the best of what's left from the MWC:

Big 12 East:

Baylor Bears
Iowa State Cyclones
Kansas Jayhawks
Kansas State Wildcats
Oklahoma State Cowboys
TCU Horned Frogs
Houston Cougars
Texas Tech Red Raiders

Big 12 West:

Utah State Aggies
Air Force Falcons
Boise State Broncos
Colorado State Rams
Nevada Wolf Pack
New Mexico Lobos
San Jose or Wyoming
BYU

I think it's more likely the Big 12 tries to take a couple teams from the AAC. They could take Boise +1 from the MW, but I think they'd look to Florida or Cincinnati or something like that.

Baylor already making chatter about joining the Big East for oly sports, parking FB in the AAC? Interesting stuff's a brewing so it seems.

Big 12 would likely target Houston and Cinci, but the gutted Big 12 might not look so good to anyone, not even ybu.

What?? Sounds like a mess for them... BUT it would be tremendous for the MW to have a few other programs bail from the Big 12. Likely because a few of them would probably try to join the MW if this were the scenario.

Honestly...if the Big 12 took Boise and BYU and took 2-4 of the top AAC teams, I'd truly be perfectly happy picking up a couple leftover AAC teams (say, SMU and Memphis) and calling it a day. I'd rather have that conference than one with Boise State in it.

I'm just not sure how the proposed playoff killed the Big 12... OU and Texas would both benefit from the Big 12 because of an easier path to the automatic bid. Being the conference champ of the new SEC would be near impossible, but I guess the at larges will be a big deal there. Probably get half of them every year.

Texas not being Texas on the field for the last decade hasn't helped...

If this happens (OU and Texas to the SEC). Look for the Big Ten to attempt to make a similar splash either raiding the ACC (Clemson) and/or the PAC-12 (UCLA, USC, Washington).

Do you think they would really go all the way across the country? I think they'd definitely chase the ACC and Notre Dame, but I have my doubts it would affect the PAC-12 much.

I think the most likely would be USC/UCLA and I don't think that geography really matters much for these big conferences, it's all about the $$$

The P4 should just start one mega-conference with 3 tiers like European Futball does, then the G6 could follow suit.

The chance for us to have gotten lucky came and went (Utah Legislature could have required USU-Utah be tied at the hip, we would have been in the PAC-12 [not likely] or at least in the WAC/MWC all those years instead of wasting away in the BW/Sun Belt and Indy).

in 1968 Utah State had the legislative votes to mandate USU and Utah be in the same conference. USU failed to press the issue and close the legislation. Point, set, match.

We have had over half a century to focus on and develop corporate, small business and individual support along the Wasatch Front. Conference alignments aren't rah rah rallies but formed from studied due diligence and real time needs. Utah got a break that USU won't ever get a sniff off.

Yep that was our one chance, now we're boned. Too late to mandate that now, PAC-12 isn't inviting USU.

Great pull. But as they say, chaos creates opportunity. Is it likely we're in the same spot (or worse) when the dust settles? Probably.

Nonetheless, USU should do EVERYTHING it can to make a big play here! Leverage every relationship, use every political avenue, rally every big donor, or bribe whomever to get it done. Or it might be another 50 years of mediocrity and getting pissed on by Utah/BYU sh*theads.

Yes I agree, they should do everything possible to better their situation. We’ll see how this all shakes out, don’t worry about YBU. No major conference will touch their high maintenance program. If anything I could see them back in Mountain West.

Utah State isn't going anywhere. But if you want to try and hope on something, maybe the MWC getting stronger could at least be a little more realistic than that hope..?

As much changes we've seen this offseason, the thing that has kept my excitement for the future of college football is the expanded CFP. Even with super conferences forming, the door now being open even for the G5 has at least kept my hope.

Our downstate enemies benefitted from the Big 8-SWC merger that led to the WAC16 and created the Big12. SMU Rice, Tulsa, and TCU were nice additions.

That the new league was hard to configure because of history and geography is unsurprising, and today's MWC needs to remember that lesson. Picking up a couple of Texas schools wouldn't be terrible, so long as the USU-CSU-Wyo-UNM foursome can stick together.

That graphic is so jacked, I don't know where to start.
But here's where I'll end....
It will be a cold day in hell when the Pac-12 admits a school with an Academic track record like Boise State.

No one is gonna want K-State or Texas Tech.

Welcome to the MW, K-State and Tech!

KU and ISU will end up in the Big 10
Baylor, OSU, TCU, and West Virginia will end up in the AAC.

It would be kind of funny if Matt Wells ended up back in the MW at Texas Tech.

I wouldn't mind this in the West for FB:

Pacific Division:

San Jose St
Fresno St
San Diego St
Nevada-Reno
Nevada-Vegas
Cal State-Boazy [FB only + WAC all-sports]
Cal State-Pwovo [FB only + WCC all-sports]]

Mountain Division:

AFA
CSU
Wyo
USU [Crosses over to Pacific for MBB + Olympic Sports as needed]
UNM
TTU
KSU

Play six games in Division and three crossover games
Permit no more than one FCS cupcake per season
Permit no more than one bodybag per season
Permit no more than one cross-divisional H&H, non-league per season
With a scheduling agreement with Manoa, guaranteeing 6-8 games annually.

The P12 makes no changes and goes its own way
The WAC makes whatever changes it wants and goes its own way

in 1968 Utah State had the legislative votes to mandate USU and Utah be in the same conference.

Agree with you Orange, yet USU has failed so regularly to prepare for and capitalize on historic events over the past decades. First we had the WAC debacle where USU was the top athletic dog in FOOTBALL and BASKETBALL.

After failing to participate in the new club, USU again failed by not attempting to gather into a rival and survival conference San Jose, Fresno, Pacific, NMSU, CSU, SDSU, UNLV and a couple of other possible schools (Idaho) to form a competitive conference. These are thoughts that were run across the desk of LaDell Anderson and later on with Rod Tueller. Both happened to be good men and loyal AGGIES, yet they neither saw nor acted on the potential. Seems Utah State has missed a lot of open doors over the years.

being the same league as Boise St., BYU AND Kansas St. would be pretty much unbearable. Three of the worst fan bases in America.

What are the chances that Texas and OU are not actually joining the SEC, but are joining most of the SEC? I still think we eventually end up with roughly 32 power teams, with an east and west division of 16 teams each. Whether now or in 10 years. The bottom half of the P5 will be the ones that really get hurt. G5 Will be fine. Though in the long run it's probably better for the Wazzus of the world to not be in an arms race with USC and Oregon...
