Can anyone confirm or deny
that money WAS the only reason Matt Wells was not fired after the 2016 season? Some people argued, like fans at nearly every school with a buyout dilemma, that it would have costed us more money to NOT fire him cause of lost ticket revune. Or was Wells, cause of what he was able to accomplish his first two years, able to afford the decline that happened in 2015 and 2016. I guess you could say that with sub-par years early on, he doesn't get the extension and we don't have the same money reasons for not firing him after 2016. Still, it seems like the boosters were told late in 2016 more it was money reasons and less that he was a good coach that would get it turned aroud.
You have to wonder how many of the other coaches who got fired from bigger schools would have been able to turn it around if money and buyouts was an object for those schools like it was for us.
Also, the fact that we declined in two short years after Wells left shows how hard it is to stay on top or even decent, and that Wells did deserve some credit for what he did his first two years, as it's not as simple as saying Brent Guy or any other coach would have had similar success those years like some would argue.

For sure Wells was on the hot seat before our Fearless Leader insisted he hire Yost, and gave him an ultimatum to allow others to step in and help coach the team, not to be such a micro-manager, but wanted to fire him? No
